BTS took a break and still stayed unstoppable: Chapter 2 solo success stories that became a love letter to ARMY

Gulf News19-04-2025

June 2022, BTS Festa.
You just had to be there. The BTS Live that is often considered the real 'horror film' by ARMYs—was filled with bittersweet and tearful confessions, mixed with the band's taste of fun and hilarity. Yet the essence was: They were going to take a break as a band. They were tired, fearful of being mechanical and losing the meaning of what it meant to be BTS, as an overwrought RM said. Instantly, social media broke apart—the band was breaking up. They were on indefinite hiatus. We won't ever see all seven of them on stage. It's all over, and fans penned emotional letters, thanking them for everything.
The members were stunned. This wasn't what they expected. So, individually, they penned letters comforting ARMY—they weren't breaking up. They were just on a break. For a while. And they would continue to deliver RUN BTS episodes, as part of their variety show projects. And, there would be solo projects.
Some fans were sceptical. Solo eras? Would that even work? After all, it's BTS—yes everyone know they were established artists who had also pursued individual projects, but a solo era for each? Not sure.
Well, BTS set that thought straight with their 'Chapter 2', where each member continued paving the way for the band.
J-Hope
The solo era kicked off with J-Hope 's Jack in The Box, where he was determined to burn down the 'old' polished image of himself as his song Arson showed—and prove the different facets of himself. But that was just the beginning—from 2022, and even while he was in mandatory enlistment—his awards just kept stacking up.
Achievements:
Jack in the Box debuted at No. 17 in July 2022.
Re-entered at No. 6 in August 2023 with the HOPE Edition, marking his first solo top 10 entry.
Hope on the Street Vol.1 debuted at No. 5 in April 2024, setting a new personal best.
First South Korean artist to headline Chicago's Lollapalooza in 2022.
Embarked on his first solo tour, Hope on the Stage, in 2025, with performances across major cities including Seoul, Brooklyn, Chicago, Los Angeles, and San Antonio.
RM
From releasing the thoughtful album Indigo, 'the last archive of his twenties' to the emotional unravelling in Right Place, Wrong Person, and everything in between, the leader of the band kept himself busy. He released a distinct range of songs too, some like Smoke Sprite, and the sassy Never Play.
1. Indigo (Released: December 2, 2022)
RM's debut solo studio album featured collaborations with Erykah Badu, Anderson .Paak, Tablo, and more.
The album debuted at No. 15 and later peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard 200, making RM the first Korean soloist to achieve a Top 3 spot on the chart.
Indigo became the longest-charting album by a Korean soloist on the Billboard 200, with seven non-consecutive weeks.
The title track, 'Wild Flower''featuring Youjeen, debuted at No. 83 on the Billboard Hot 100, marking RM's first solo entry on the chart.
2. Right Place, Wrong Person (Released: 2024)
RM's second solo album leaned into experimental and genre-blending soundscapes, drawing from funk, alt-rock, and avant-garde influences.
The album includes collaborations with international artists such as Little Simz and Moses Sumney.
Critics praised the album's philosophical themes and boundary-pushing sound.
Chart achievements
Following its vinyl release, Indigo re-entered the Billboard 200 at No. 53, and topped the Vinyl Albums chart at No. 2—the highest for any Korean soloist.
Indigo debuted at No. 45 on the UK's Official Albums Chart, making RM the third Korean soloist to do so after PSY and Agust D (SUGA).
Collaborations and notable Projects
In September 2024, RM collaborated with Megan Thee Stallion on the single 'Neva Play,' their second joint effort after the 2021 Butter remix.
He released the documentary RM: Right People, Wrong Place in late 2024, offering a behind-the-scenes look at the creative process for his second solo album, as well as personal reflections during BTS's group hiatus.

Review: Hanu, an interactive new Korean restaurant

In Dubai's burgeoning restaurant scene, a handful of restaurants make an instant impact. Sushisamba was one such restaurant, which brought a trifecta of excellent views, dishes and vibes to the Palm Tower in 2021. The man who can be credited with much of the success on the culinary front is chef Kyung Soo Moon, the restaurant's then-executive chef. But now he's turned his attention back to his roots for Hanu, a modern interpretation of Korean cuisine. Found at St Regis Gardens, it's in good company with restaurants like Leña, Aretha, Chez Wam and Tresind Studio among its neighbours. Once inside, we're met with dark and moody interiors with intricate attention to detail. Rich dark walnut woods, striking artworks and Korean pine trees lace the traditional with more contemporary accents befitting of a glamourous new Dubai restaurant. You enter through the lounge and bar where a DJ spins enigmatic beats that are thankfully not overpowering, through to a table in the restaurant. If you're unfamiliar with Korean BBQ, the knowledgeable team are on-hand to make recommendations, and confidently talk us through the concept and must-try dishes. The wagyu beef gyoza (Dhs68) are one such dish, piping hot parcels of Japanese A5 wagyu short rib and shiitake mushroom encased in a dough that's the perfect level of crispy and tender. Forget everything you know about vegetables and order the Korean fried cauliflower (Dhs65), coated in a spicy sauce and served with a side of yuja radish to balance the heat. The almost-too-pretty-to-eat beef tartelette (Dhs110) is another playful interpretation of classic Korean flavours, with a soft quail egg marinated in soy sauce, served on top of a tartelette of beef jongjorim, a layer of caviar giving it a Dubai elevation. To truly get a taste of Korean BBQ, order the 'Meat Me At The Grill' (Dhs365 per person), where you'll be served four cuts of premium meat with a selection of sides, condiments and a stew. It's a generous offering – much like it would be if you dined at Chef Moon's family home – given added wow-factor with the meats cooked on the charcoal grill built into each table. Each buttery cut of meat is full of flavour and perfectly cooked, from the Australian Black Angus to the Japanese A4 Wagyu striploin. For dessert, a beautifully presented golden pear delight (Dhs63) is a light and fresh way to end the meal. Diced Korean pear is paired with a walnut crumble and a scoop of tonka bean ice cream. Verdict: A focus on quality cuisine and service makes this a restaurant deserving of a place on your foodie bucket list. Explained: Why BTS' label Hybe's chairman is facing life imprisonment over fraud allegations

BTS fans around the world are eagerly waiting for the K-pop band's reunion after the remaining members are released from military duty in June. However, Bang Si-hyuk, the man who formed BTS, is currently under investigation after being accused of fraudulent and unfair trading practices. According to Korean media outlets, Bang Si-hyuk, 52, is being investigated by the Financial Supervisory Service (FSS) for allegedly misleading investors and bagging about 400 billion won ($289 million) during the company's initial public offering (IPO) process. Did Bang Si-hyuk deceive investors? Sources say the FSS has evidence suggesting Bang may have engaged in deceptive practices involving private equity firms. Back in 2019, when Hybe was still known as BigHit Entertainment, existing shareholders were told there was had no immediate plans to go public, persuading some investors to sell their stakes to a private equity fund allegedly set up by an associate. However, the company simultaneously began the process to go public after Bang allegedly signed a private shareholders' agreement with local PEFs to share profits from a future listing, a deal that was not disclosed at the time. While investors suffered heavy losses from the post-IPO sell-off, the private equity fund reaped a large profit after the company went public. The alleged gains from the scheme are estimated at around 400 billion won ($290 million). The BigHit IPO filed in October 2020 increased Bang's net worth to $2.8 billion, reportedly making him the only billionaire in South Korea's entertainment industry and the sixth-richest person in the country. Could it lead to life imprisonment? The FSS is investigating Bang's transactions with the PEFs and plans to refer the case to prosecutors for potential criminal prosecution, according to KED Global. HYBE's alleged secret profit-sharing agreement between Bang and the PEFs could constitute a violation of disclosure rules under the Capital Markets Act. If found guilty, Bang could face a prison sentence of five years or more, or a life sentence, if the profit exceeds 5 billion won. Meanwhile, BTS ARMY around the world are eagerly waiting for the seven band members to reunite. While j-hope and Jin have already completed their mandatory military service, Jungkook, Jumin, V, RM and Suga are set to be released from their duties in June.
