Danity Kane's Dawn Richard Testifies in Diddy Trial, Claims He Tried to Hit Cassie With Hot Skillet
Richard, 41, was sworn in late on Friday shortly before court adjourned for the day. The prosecution asked her about an alleged incident in 2009 where she saw Diddy, 55, threatening Cassie in his Los Angeles home.
'He came downstairs screaming, belligerent, asking where his food was and continued to hit her in the head and kick her on the ground in front of us,' Richard claimed, noting that she was visiting Diddy and was in the kitchen with Cassie, 38, during the alleged attack.
'He came downstairs angry and was saying, 'Where the f*** was his eggs' and he was telling Cassie she never gets anything right and where the f*** was his food,' Richard alleged. 'And he came over to the skillet with the eggs in it and tried to hit her over the head, and she fell to the ground.'
Diddy Trial 1st Week Ends With Cassie Cross-Examination, Dawn Richard Testimony
Richard claimed Diddy continued to beat Cassie while she was on the floor then 'proceeded to take his arm around her neck and dragged her by the hair up the stairs.' The following day, Diddy allegedly invited Richard and her Dirty Money bandmate Kalenna Harper to record with him in the studio, where he told them the attack they'd both seen was 'passion.' Richard further claimed he threatened them, saying, 'People who say something can end up missing.'
After Richard finished her testimony, Diddy's attorney Marc Agnifilo asked the judge to strike it from the record, arguing that it does not support the charge of sex trafficking. The prosecution, meanwhile, has argued that Diddy's alleged abuse created a culture that allowed him to carry out more serious crimes.
Richard starred on Diddy's MTV reality show Making the Band 3 from 2005 to 2006 and was a member of the girl group Danity Kane alongside Aubrey O'Day, D. Woods, Shannon Bex and Aundrea Fimbres. Days before Diddy's arrest last year, Richard filed a lawsuit accusing him of manipulating, terrorizing and sexually abusing her. She also claimed that she witnessed him physically abusing ex-girlfriend Cassie (real name Casandra Ventura).
In her suit, Richard alleged that Diddy abused her by forcing her to rehearse 48 hours at a time without sleep, which led to dehydration and fatigue that caused her to develop rashes. She also claimed that he promised to advance her singing career if she complied with his demands.
Diddy Sued by Former 'Making the Band' Star Sara Rivers: Every Allegation From the Show's Alums
Richard further alleged that Diddy demanded she come to his home in Miami, where he appeared only wearing underwear. After she asked him to put his clothes on, Diddy allegedly yelled at her, 'This is my f***ing house!' She also claimed he touched her inappropriately after barging into her dressing room at his recording studio and once locked her in a car for two hours as she screamed for help.
Richard's lawsuit included additional claims that she saw Diddy harm other people in front of her, including his late girlfriend Kim Porter in 2005. Years later, Richard claimed she saw Diddy throw Cassie against a wall before choking her in his Los Angeles home.
Diddy denied Richard's allegations in a September 2024 statement shared via his attorney Erica Wolff. 'Mr. Combs is shocked and disappointed by this lawsuit. In an attempt to rewrite history, Dawn Richard has now manufactured a series of false claims all in the hopes of trying to get a payday — conveniently timed to coincide with her album release and press tour,' Wolff told Us. 'If Ms. Richard had such a negative experience with Making the Band and Danity Kane, she would not have chosen to continue working directly with Mr. Combs for Dirty Money, nor would she have returned for the Making the Band reboot in 2020 or agreed to be featured on The Love Album last year. It's unfortunate that Ms. Richard has cast their 20-year friendship aside to try and get money from him, but Mr. Combs is confidently standing on truth and looks forward to proving that in court.'
Danity Kane's Dawn Richard Reacts to Diddy's Arrest and Indictment
Diddy was arrested in September 2024 and charged with sex trafficking, racketeering conspiracy and transportation to engage in prostitution. He pleaded not guilty to all charges and has denied all of the allegations against him.
'We are disappointed with the decision to pursue what we believe is an unjust prosecution of Mr. Combs by the U.S. Attorney's Office,'Agnifilo said in a statement at the time. 'He is an imperfect person, but he is not a criminal. To his credit Mr. Combs has been nothing but cooperative with this investigation and he voluntarily relocated to New York last week in anticipation of these charges. Please reserve your judgment until you have all the facts. These are the acts of an innocent man with nothing to hide, and he looks forward to clearing his name in court.'
Danity Kane's Dawn Richard Sues Diddy, Accuses Him of Brutality, Sexual Abuse and Manipulation
Since his arrest, Diddy has been held at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn. His four requests for bail were denied by Judge Arun Subramanian.
Before Richard took the stand this week, Cassie testified for four days about her relationship with Diddy, which lasted off and on from 2007 to 2018. Cassie also filed a lawsuit against the rapper in November 2023, accusing him of physical and sexual abuse throughout their relationship. He denied her allegations at the time, and they settled the suit out of court one day later. During her testimony, Cassie revealed that they settled for $20 million.

Kid Cudi Says He Knows He Did ‘The Right Thing' Testifying Against Diddy: ‘That's All That Matters'
"I had a lot of people that supported me, but there were a few that had some opinions about it," the rapper says of the backlash Kid Cudi has opened up about his experience testifying against Sean 'Diddy' Combs, calling the ordeal 'really hard' but insisting that he still believes it was the right thing to do. In honor of his new book, 'Cudi: The Memoir,' the rapper — whose real name is Scott Mescudi — sat down for an interview with 'CBS Mornings.' The interview was released Wednesday, a little less than three months after Cudi took the stand against Diddy. Taylor Swift Reveals Title of Her 12th Album, 'The Life of a Showgirl' Bobby Whitlock, Derek and the Dominos Founder of 'Layla' Fame and 'Exile on Main St.' Session Player,' Dies at 77 'It was really hard. I didn't want to do it. I got subpoenaed,' the rapper said of being a witness in the Diddy trial. 'It was weird, man, because that was the first time I had seen him in a while. We made eye contact a couple times.' Cudi briefly dated Cassie Ventura, the singer who testified that Diddy had abused, blackmailed and trafficked her during their turbulent, years-long relationship. During his testimony, Cudi alleged that Diddy had been abusive to Cassie and that the music industry mogul broke into his house after he found out he and Cassie were dating. Cudi also told the court he believed Diddy later set his car on fire. After he realized that he would have to testify, Cudi told 'CBS Mornings' that it was the support his testimony would provide Cassie that helped him get through the experience. 'I knew I was helping Cassie. I just wanted to be there and help her out,' he explained. 'I know I did the right thing, so that's all that matters.' The rapper also addressed the backlash he received from some of Diddy's supporters for speaking out against him. 'I had a lot of people that supported me, but there were a few that had some opinions about it,' Cudi acknowledged. 'It was interesting because I'm not no street dude. I don't live by no code, you know? So I guess it's because I'm a rapper. People just threw that on me. But, like, my music has never been about that and I have never tried to pretend I was about that.' In July, Combs' trial ended with him being found not guilty of the federal sex trafficking and racketeering charges against him. He was, however, found guilty of of the prostitution charges against him, each of which carry a maximum potential prison sentence of 10 years. Despite a release motion filed by his defense team, Diddy has been ordered to remain in federal detention until his sentencing hearing, which is scheduled for Oct. 3. 'I'm a victim of cuckooing - I'm ashamed, my Thornton Heath home wasn't mine anymore'
'I felt like it wasn't my home anymore. It was awful. I felt ashamed that I let the situation happen... I'm a grown man,' Richard said, talking to me in his small flat in Thornton Heath. Richard, whose real name we aren't using for his safety, was a victim of cuckooing, where criminals take over a vulnerable person's home to deal, store or take drugs. Richard's vulnerability due to his mental health – he said he 'hears voices' - was exploited by a group of people who used his home as a drug den. 'It started when they knocked on my door. They were homeless, or so they said, so I let them stay for a little bit but they started to take over. I didn't say anything - I thought they would just leave eventually... out of politeness - but they started inviting their friends over and would stay for nights at a time,' Richard said. 'They used to sit outside the front door smoking. The neighbours blamed me. I felt so embarrassed. I eventually asked them to leave. They wouldn't. It got confrontational and we had a few scuffles.' The group came and went from Richard's home as if it belonged to them for over a year but Richard is hopeful that's now over following a police intervention. Chief Inspector James Weston, whose team were called to Richard's flat on June 29, said: 'We found three drug users inside along with a zombie knife. 'Two of them were on his sofa and one was on the bed next to it, so Richard didn't even have anywhere to sit. These criminals completely take over the home.' Richard said the group have returned since the police visit but he stood firm and turned them away. But with Thornton Heath and surrounding areas being a hot spot for county lines operations, many other vulnerable people have found themselves in the same position as Richard. I joined Met Police and Croydon Council officers on Tuesday, August 5, as they made visits to addresses which have been cuckooed in the past with the aim of safeguarding the victims and building intel to target the perpetrators. It took us to the home of a man in his late 60s – we'll call him Andy rather than his real name - who was very vulnerable because of a brain injury. Just days before our visit, officers attended Andy's home following a call about his welfare from a concerned neighbour. When police knocked on his door a man jumped out of the window and ran away, officers then found two zombie knives at the scene. On returning to Andy's address a few days later, we saw evidence that his living room had been taken over by drug dealers. A large amount of white powder – most likely a cutting agent to mix with drugs – was found alongside other drug paraphernalia and a broken knuckle duster. A knuckle duster found in Andy's home (Image: Newsquest) The lightbulb was removed from the living room, which officers believed may have been an attempt by the drug dealers to make the room unusable for Andy – who said 'I don't sit in the living room, I just sit in my bedroom.' Sergeant George Bartlett said: 'He's a prisoner in his own home, and he's not the only one.' Cuckooing victims are frequently subjected to threats or actual violence and abuse to keep them compliant. Often the victims are substance abusers, but people with disabilities are also seen as fair game for these criminals. In Andy and Richard's cases the police have been able to put a stop to the abuse before it escalated any further, but in September of last year a woman in north London a suspected cuckooing victim jumped to her death from her balcony. Sergeant Bartlett said local officers team are committed to stamping out cuckooing in the Croydon. 'If we can work together – local officers, the local authority, county lines, Project Adder (addiction, diversion, disruption, enforcement and recovery) - we can help,' he said.

Retro Bar brings '80s and '90s nostalgia back to Uptown
Retro Bar is a new throwback nightclub opening in Uptown this weekend. Why it matters: Longtime bar owner Mike Palladino is betting that a bold, retro concept — and a bit of nostalgia — can help revive Uptown Charlotte's nightlife scene. Driving the news: Retro Bar is soft opening Friday at 200 N. Tryon St., in the space previously occupied by SIP Bar & Cellar, also owned by Palladino. Context: After 13 years running SIP, Palladino is transforming the space into Retro Bar and Retro Cellar, aiming to fill the void left by Roxbury's 2023 closur e and recapture demand for old-school music venues in the city center. Between the lines: Palladino is also the co-owner of Must Be Nice in South End and has several decades of experience hosting parties in Charlotte. The vibe: The two-level venue will feature retro hits from the '70s, '80s and '90s, and a dance floor on both floors. The main floor offers a laid-back lounge with old MTV-style videos and a disco ball; downstairs, Retro Cellar is a darker, mirrored space with dance vibes and pop icons projected through the mirrors. Its bar will feature the classics, plus six specialty cocktails ranging from $16-$20. Palladino hopes the venue will become a pre- and post-show stop for Blumenthal visitors and a staple for those craving throwback nightlife. If you go: Grand opening weekend begins Aug. 22. Be patient and kind to your servers as they get their bearings during the soft opening weekend. This Friday, Aug. 15, it'll open 8pm-2am. On Saturday, Aug. 16, it'll open 5pm-2am. Retro Bar is opening just in time for Sunday's Charlotte Pride Parade, which passes directly in front of the bar. On Sunday, Aug. 17, it'll open 12pm-2am and it'll host a Pride parade afterparty.
