The change in royal protocol Sophie is 'relieved' about since becoming a Duchess

Daily Mail26-07-2025
Sophie, the Duchess of Edinburgh, is known for her down-to-earth nature and was reportedly viewed by the Queen as The Firm's safest pair of hands.
Patron of more than 70 charities and organisations, including Childline and the London College of Fashion, she undertakes over 200 engagements each year, including visits to schools, hospitals and military bases.
For this reason, it was an incredibly poignant moment when the former Countess of Wessex became a Duchess in 2023 to mark Prince Edward 's 59th birthday.
This was in keeping with his parents' wishes and in recognition of Edward's commitment to the Duke of Edinburgh's Award youth scheme.
Sophie said in a recent interview that the change in title 'felt like quite a big moment' because of its connection to the late queen.
But according to friends of Sophie, she was also 'relieved' that her move up the royal ranks means she no longer needs to curtsey to Meghan Markle. The relationship between the two women has been tenuous since the beginning.
A friend of the couple said: 'Sophie is relieved. She no longer has to curtsey to someone in the family who has not only left Royal duties but has spent the past three years criticising the institution that Sophie works so hard to support.'
When Meghan entered the Royal Family fresh from her role in Suits, the late Queen enlisted Sophie to teach her the ropes.

But according to royal author Gyles Brandreth, Meghan 'wasn't interested' in receiving advice from her new mentor.
This led Sophie to make a cutting remark when asked about ' stepping in' for Meghan and Harry after they stepped down as senior royals.
According to royal expert Katie Nicholl, Sophie said: 'What did people think we were doing beforehand?'
This wasn't the only time Sophie addressed Harry and Meghan's exit from the family.
Following the Sussexes' explosive tell-all interview with Oprah Winfrey in March 2021, Sophie and Edward made a cheeky remark.
When asked about the much-discussed interview by The Telegraph, the Prince simply said, 'Oprah, who?' while Sophie added with a laugh, 'What interview?'
Speaking about Harry and Meghan's exit from the Firm, Sophie added: 'I just hope they will be happy.'
More pointedly, she then stated that the royals do all they can to try to assist new members to adjust, adding: 'We all try to help any new members of the family'.

Sophie and Meghan travelled together in a car down The Mall ahead of the Queen's State Funeral in September 2022.
After travelling together, Sophie was described as a 'savvy peacemaker' who may be tasked with 'soothing tensions between the Sussexes and the rest of the Firm.'
According to royal expert Camilla Tominey, writing in the Telegraph, the job of making sure the 'Sussexes are made to feel part of the sombre proceedings' appeared to have fallen to Sophie.
The royal expert cited reports of previous times the former Countess is believed to have 'stepped in to soothe tensions,' including after the funeral of Philip, when she is said to have sought out Harry and spoken with him for some 30 minutes.
And a former aide of Sophie told the Telegraph that she 'is made for the role of mediator.'
They said: 'That's why she's the Queen's favourite daughter-in-law - she's down to earth and just gets on with it.'
Speaking during her visit to Bosnia and Herzegovina last week, Sophie said in an interview with The Mirror: 'First of all it was quite large shoes to fill because not as many of the population alive today will remember but the Queen was Duchess of Edinburgh for the first few years when she and my father-in-law first married.
'For me, it was quite an emotional thing to sort of step into her shoes [as being Duchess of Edinburgh], it felt like quite a big moment.'

She explained, however, that in practical terms her and her husband's role is to support the King as it was to support the Queen.
In her interview, Sophie also opened up on what it is like being seen as the Royal Family's 'secret weapon'.
She explained that she doesn't see herself as being in a 'front and centre' role, which allows her more time to pursue her own interests.
Sophie said: 'I like to fly under the radar. It's all very well being a secret weapon but if no one knows, maybe it's too secret.'
'I suppose I should take it as a backhanded compliment,' she added.
Royal expert Russell Myers previously claimed that Sophie 'undoubtedly benefited' from Harry and Meghan stepping back from royal life because it has 'raised her profile'.
Speaking on True Royalty TV's The Royal Beat, he explained: 'Are the Instagram generation going to be as obsessed with Sophie and Edward Wessex as they are with the Sussexes? Obviously not.
'However, when you're dealing with them… Sophie's really across her subject matter. It's not just for show and she has really grown into that. With the Sussexes not here, the Wessexes will undoubtedly benefit.'
Meanwhile he also pointed to how similar Meghan and Sophie's interests are, saying: 'The similarities between Sophie and Meghan are there to be seen.
'Sophie's working with girls' education, she's done a lot of stuff about violence against females in Africa.'
Most recently royal expert Richard Fitzwilliams told MailOnline that Sophie's hard-hitting advocacy work could have allowed Meghan to flourish in the Royal Family.
In recent years the King's sister-in-law, who is married to his brother, Prince Edward, has travelled to current and former war zones including Chad, the Congo, Kosovo, South Chad, Lebanon and Sierra Leone.
She has devoted much of her latter working life as a royal to supporting the Women, Peace and Security Agenda and is passionate about championing gender equality.
Fitzwilliams said: 'Meghan is struggling to be an influencer, Sophie has influence in ways that really matter, which Meghan could have been.
'Meghan has always boasted about how she promotes feminism.
'Yet contrast the occasional speech she makes in comfortable surroundings with the remarkable work of Sophie who actually visits areas of the world such as Sudan and Chad which have been devastated by war and attempts to comfort the women who are victims of rape and exploitation.'
He added that Meghan's departure from frontline royal duties is a case of 'wasted potential', while Sophie has ' proved she's the Royal Family's champion of women's rights'.
In the most recent YouGov opinion poll, 51 per cent of Brits said they felt positively about Sophie, compared to just 20 per cent for Meghan.
Just 12 per cent of people had a negative view of Sophie compared to 65 for Meghan.
Sophie is currently ranked as the sixth most popular royal, compared to Meghan who falters in 19th place.
In 2019 Meghan was the sixth most popular royal and Sophie was in 11th place.

Zara McDermott and Louis Tomlinson's fans go wild as couple confirm they're in LOVE after taking their relationship to the next level with a PDA-packed post

and Louis Tomlinson 's fans have gone wild as the couple confirmed they're in love. The couple, who began dating in secret as they worked out their romance, have now gone public as they locked lips on her social media grid. The TV presenter, 28, and the singer, 33, are reportedly 'the real deal' after declaring their love for each other for the world to see underneath the post. Louis commented, 'I love you' under the picture of them kissing, which Zara shared with her followers on Monday evening. The post sent fans crazy as they rushed to the comments to gush over their relationship. They penned: 'Crying screaming, throwing up cuties omg... I'm freaking out OMGGG SO PROUD OF YOU... Such a beautiful couple. I'm so happy for you. 'THAT'S SO CUTE... IM GONNA CRY THIS IS THE CUTESY THING EVER... AMAZING COUPLE MAN.' It was first revealed five months ago that Zara and Louis were dating after they struck up a romance at the start of the year, but now friends say it's serious. An insider told the Sun: 'Louis and Zara dated out of the public eye for a while before going public so they could make sure this was the real deal. 'They've both never been happier and are a lovely couple. Louis and Zara are both very career driven and support each other's endeavours.' The former Love Island star hit headlines when she was linked to the One Direction superstar earlier this year when they were spotted enjoying a secret date. And earlier this week, Zara seemed to prove things are certainly serious as she sent fans wild with a snap of them locking lips for a very cheeky selfie. She captioned the post with a simple red love heart emoji. Zara and Louis went Instagram official in June, five months after they began dating as they enjoyed the weekend at Glastonbury with their pals. The post sent fans crazy as they rushed to the comments to gush over their relationship The couple were spotted packing on the PDA in a TikTok video at the festival as Louis wrapped his arms around Zara who flopped her head back onto his shoulder, while enjoying the music. The pair's relationship hasn't come without its challenges after Louis and Zara's ex Sam Thompson came face-to-face for the first time at Soccer Aid in June. Zara and the former Made In Chelsea star split in December after five years together, with Zara moving out of the pair's home. And a seemingly awkward interaction ensued when the two men met, with Louis reportedly blanking Sam following the match at Old Trafford despite holding 'peace talks' at the team hotel earlier. The woman at the centre of the drama was however nowhere to be seen, with Zara later admitting the reaction to her love life has been 'frustrating'. She told The Sun: 'The only thing in my life worth writing about is the work I do.' The star also revealed that, despite still posting glamorous snaps to Instagram, she no longer spends much time on social media and is more grounded in her 'relationships'. 'I don't care about social media as much as I used to, or about the aesthetic or the image, I value so much real relationships and real support around me, and being that to other people,' she added. 'I'm a totally different person to the one I was when I was 21 years old and stepped into what appeared to be a glitzy world of showbiz, my day to day life is not at all glitz and glamour.' Last month Zara seemingly gave a sweet nod to her relationship with Louis in an Instagram video as she wore a necklace with the initial 'L' while speaking to fans on Instagram stories. While Zara or her jewellery didn't mention Louis by name, her delicate gold chain with the letter 'L' rather than her own initial certainly alluded to her blossoming romance. Meanwhile, Sam has admitted he'd had an 'uncomfortable' start to the year after he and Zara split up. The TV personality insisted that sometimes a difficult period can 'shock' someone into making a much-needed change in their life. Appearing on his close friend Pete Wicks ' Man Made podcast, he candidly reflected on the past year following the split and how he has evolved. He said: 'It's such a weird one because I still look to people for help all the time. 'I look to you, if I'm ever in a problem, I'll call you, I'll call Marvin, I'll call Tony, I'll call Ryan, my brother-in -law, I'll call Louise. 'I have a lot of people who I depend on and as much as I love that, I still feel inside like I'm not quite at the place where I can take care of myself.' Pete asked: 'So do you think then that asking people for help or being dependent on other people makes you less of a man?' Sam clarified: 'Asking for help, no. I think I lean a little bit too heavily into the depending.' It comes after Sam and Zara ended their relationship in December, following a holiday season spent separately. A source close to the couple told Daily Mail at the time: 'Sam and Zara have ended their relationship. It's been an incredibly difficult decision for them to part ways, they still care and have a lot of love for each other. 'But after a tough year of working hard at their romance, they have split and will be focusing on their individual careers going forward into 2025. 'There has been no scandal or fallout between them, it's just the result of a difficult year, where they both had to spend a lot of time focused on their own projects.' The couple were last seen together celebrating Zara's birthday in December, where Sam dedicated an Instagram post to his girlfriend, calling her his 'soulmate' and 'best friend.'

First edition of The Hobbit discovered in UK home sells for £43,000

It is one of only 1,500 copies printed in September 1937, according to auction house Auctioneum, and was sold to a UK-based private collector at an auction held in Bath. Caitlin Riley, book specialist at Auctioneum, said: 'It's the quintessential auction story. Everyone dreams of finding a rare item hidden in plain sight, and here we are. 'House clearances can be tricky, stressful and troublesome – if ever there is a good advert for our service, it's this! This could have so easily been sent to landfill or disposed of by someone who didn't realise it was there. It really is a lucky survivor! 'The result just goes to show the pure love for Tolkien's work. Written nearly 90 years ago, it's amazing how relevant and popular it still is. 'People still want the escape; they want to delve into a fantastical world and discover new characters. Some people are clearly willing to pay large sums for the privilege. 'Much like the tale within the covers – selling this has been a real adventure. 'We've had hundreds of inquiries from all around the world and whilst we were expecting a certain amount of interest, we weren't quite expecting this much! It's a wonderful result, for a very special book.' Including buyer's premium, which is an additional charge that the winning bidder must pay on top of the hammer price, the book totalled £52,000. It was discovered in the family library of Hubert Priestley, a famous botanist in the 1930s and brother to Antarctic explorer and geologist Sir Raymond Edward Priestley. The auction house said Priestley and Tolkien both shared mutual correspondence with author CS Lewis, as well as strong connections to the University of Oxford, meaning it is likely both men knew each other. Ms Riley said: 'To think that just a few weeks ago this book was sat undiscovered on a bookshelf in a Bristol house, and has gone on to make headlines around the world, is quite incredible. 'It's the connection to Tolkien and the important provenance that makes this book so special. It's not just any first edition; it belonged to someone who very likely called Tolkien an acquaintance.' The Hobbit, a children's fantasy novel published in 1937, follows hobbit Bilbo Baggins as he is joined by wizard Gandalf and the 13 dwarves of Thorin's Company in a bid to win their treasure from dragon Smaug. Peter Jackson directed the film trilogy, which starred Martin Freeman as titular hobbit Bilbo.
