McIntosh V. Ledecky: Thrilling 800m Freestyle Duel At World Championships

Summer McIntosh and Katie Ledecky are gearing up for an epic showdown at the swimming world championships in Singapore, as both stars smoothly advanced to the 800m freestyle final on Friday.
American legend Ledecky, 28, is the unmatched champion in this event, having clinched the title at the last four Olympics and setting a new world record this May.
However, McIntosh, a decade younger than Ledecky, is eager to dethrone her as she aims to join Michael Phelps as the only swimmer to win five individual titles at a single world championship.
The 18-year-old Canadian has already secured three gold medals from three events in Singapore, and she recorded the third-fastest 800m freestyle time ever in June.
The other nine times in the top 10 belong to Ledecky, but McIntosh's current form suggests a shift in dominance might be imminent.
Ledecky set the pace in Friday morning's heats, qualifying for Saturday's final with the fastest time of 8min 14.62sec, while McIntosh finished third in 8:19.88.
'I felt a lot better than I thought I was going to this morning," McIntosh said after her heat. 'I've been recovering really well, probably the best I ever have in a big meet like this. We're on day six so to feel like this is really promising."
Ledecky first made her international mark in the 800m freestyle, winning gold at the 2012 London Olympics at just 15 years old. She has dominated the event for over a decade and demonstrated her prowess again in June by breaking her own world record, which had stood since 2016.
McIntosh also arrived in Singapore in phenomenal form, having shattered three world records within days at the Canadian trials in June.
In their first head-to-head in Singapore, McIntosh emerged victorious, claiming gold in the 400m freestyle.
The Canadian, relatively new to the 800m freestyle, navigated the heats with ease. 'My goal was just to win my heat to pretty much secure that I'll get a lane for tomorrow night's final and do that with the least amount of energy possible," she said. 'I'm just trying to get through it because I've never really done 800 heats before so I don't know what to expect. I'm just glad it's over and done with now."
Australia's Lani Pallister and Italy's Simona Quadarella also aim for podium finishes after Saturday's race, but the spotlight will be on Ledecky and McIntosh in their quest for gold.
'Having all those girls around me will definitely push me to a really good time and I'm really excited to race Katie tomorrow night," McIntosh said.

Murali Sreeshankar Wins Long Jump Title In Kazakhstan
Star long jumper Murali Sreeshankar clinched his third straight title after coming back from a long injury lay-off as he won the event at the Qosanov Memorial Athletics Meet in Almaty, Kazakhstan, on Saturday. The 26-year-old Indian produced a winning leap of 7.94m on his opening attempt to secure the top spot at the World Athletics Continental Tour Bronze label (category C) meet. His other efforts were 7.73m, 7.58m, 7.57m, 7.80m and 7.79m. He has a personal best of 8.41m. This was Sreeshankar's third competition since returning from a knee injury, which he suffered in April last year. He had undergone surgery and consequently missed the 2024 Olympics despite qualifying for the global showpiece in the French capital. Sreeshankar won the Indian Open in Pune with a jump of 8.05m jump in his first comeback competition and followed it up with a 7.75m effort to top the podium at the Meeting Maia Cidade do Desporto in Portugal. Before injury, Sreeshankar's last international appearance was a silver-medal finish at the Asian Games in Hangzhou, China in 2023. He is yet to qualify for the Tokyo World Championships in September, for which the men's long jump qualification standard is 8.27m.

CM unveils T sports policy, says will bring youth back to ground
Hyderabad: In a big fillip to the sport in the state, chief minister A Revanth Reddy on Saturday unveiled the sports policy, which he said would put the youth on the right track. The CM felt the new sports policy would bring back the sporting glory the city enjoyed in the past. "Hyderabad has a rich history of sports. Nine of the Indian football team that finished fourth in the 1954 Olympics were from Hyderabad. But the state lost track later and the sport was neglected in the last 10-15 years without proper policy. The youth, who played a crucial part in achieving a separate state, are now addicted to drugs. We plan to bring them back to the grounds with the new policy," Revanth Reddy said, addressing the sporting fraternity at the 1st Telangana Sports Conclave at HICC, Izzatnagar. He also sounded a warning that the state has declared a war on drug mafia and no one would be spared in this regard. "Our govt is committed to promoting sports. We have shown our commitment by giving Group I posts and plots to cricketer Mohammed Siraj and boxer Nikhat Zareen. Our govt policy is clear. We have formed committees with former athletes and administrators. There will be no influence from the govt," he added. He further revealed that they offered to host Khelo India games and also plan to hold two disciplines if India gets to host the 2036 Olympics. "We will have a dedicated sports university and sports academy. Our aim is to see India as a sporting nation and, as a part of our Telangana Rising Vision 2047, a chapter will be dedicated to sports. There was no budget for sports till now. We will have dedicated budget for the betterment of the sport," he added. MoUs with foreign universities During the one-day conclave, the state govt signed memoranda of understanding (MoUs) with two foreign universities — Korea National Sports University in Seoul, South Korea, and Loughborough University based in Loughborough and London. The proposed sports university, to be run from Gachibowli for now, would share academic knowledge, curriculum, coaches training programmes, academic research and project collaboration. The govt has also signed MoUs with Olympic bronze medal winning shooter Gagan Narang's Gun For Glory, Abhinav Bindra's Sports Academy and FIFA to establish a FIFA Talent Academy in the state. They also signed MoUs with Anil Kumble's Tenvic, which will help them scout talent in 1,000 residential schools with 50 of them being centres of excellence (CoEs), Olympic Values Education Programme and Aspire for Her. Narang, Bindra and Pullela Gopichand would also conduct shooting, sports science and badminton mentorship programmes respectively. Incentives to athletes The CM also handed over cash incentives to athletes who had done the state proud by winning medals. Athlete Agasara Nandini, who won a gold in heptathlon at the 26th Asian athletics championship in South Korea received Rs 5 lakh,while gymnast Nishika Agarwal, who won a bronze in vault event, was rewarded with Rs 3 lakh. Differently-abled shooter Dhanush Srikanth was given a cheque for Rs 10 lakh for winning two gold medals in men and mixed team event at the World Deaf shooting championships last year. Goalball athletes Pavan Kalyan, P Sai Teja and coach G Shiva Kumar were given Rs 4.8 lakh. Panel to oversee Sports University Special chief secretary, sports, Jayesh Ranjan revealed that "the sports policy is inclusive, with focus on grassroots and schools to identify the talent and nurture it through proper system". Around 50 residential schools will have a centre of excellence (CoE) with top-class coaches and athletes would be provided with a proper ecosystem. To oversee the whole process and run the world-class sports academy, a governing council with 15 prominent personalities has been formed. With Sanjeev Goenka as chairman and Upasana Kamineni as the co-chairperson, the panel would have the likes of BV Papa Rao, Kapil Dev, Abhinav Bindra, Pullela Gopichand, Baichung Bhutia, Ravikanth Reddy, Vita Dani, Kavya Maran and C Shashidhar, with Jayesh Ranjan and Sports Authority of Telangana chairman Shiva Sena Reddy as govt representatives. Richardson was charged Sunday with fourth degree domestic violence, according to the police report obtained by The Associated Press. On Thursday, she ran in the opening round the women's 100 meters at U.S. track and field championships in Eugene, Oregon. She has an automatic bye to the world championships in September in Tokyo as the defending champion. "USATF is aware of the reports and is not commenting on this matter," USA Track and Field said in a statement. Richardson's agent did not immediately reply to an email request for comment. The police report said an officer at the airport was notified by a Transportation Security Administration supervisor of a disturbance between the 25-year-old Richardson and her boyfriend, sprinter Christian Coleman. The officer reviewed camera footage and observed Richardson reach out with her left arm and grab Coleman's backpack and yank it away. Richardson then appeared to get in Coleman's way with Coleman trying to step around her. Coleman was shoved into a wall. The report later said that Richardson appeared to throw an item at Coleman, which the TSA indicated may have been headphones. In the police report, the officer said: "I was told Coleman did not want to participate any further in the investigation and declined to be a victim." Richardson won the 100 at the 2023 world championships in Budapest and finished with the silver at the Paris Games last summer. She had a positive positive marijuana test at the 2021 U.S. Olympic trials and didn't compete at the Tokyo Olympics.
