Timor-Leste's Accession As A Permanent ASEAN Member Draws Closer
'At the upcoming ASEAN Summit in October, there will be a ceremony to welcome Timor-Leste as a permanent member of ASEAN. Right now, it is only at the documentation stage,' Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan told reporters today.
'Most of ASEAN's requirements have already been fulfilled by Timor-Leste. We decided that they should first be admitted as a permanent member, after which ASEAN will assist them in completing the remaining documentation process,' he said after officiating the women, youth, and puteri UMNO Rembau division meetings here today.

ASEAN reaffirmed its commitment to admitting Timor-Leste as the 11th member at the 47th ASEAN Summit in October, in line with the decision made at the 46th Summit.
In the Joint Communique issued following the 58th ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting on July 9, ministers expressed their commitment to supporting Timor-Leste in expediting its early accession to key ASEAN economic agreements to facilitate its full integration into the regional bloc.
'We look forward to Timor-Leste fulfilling its roles and obligations as an incoming member state and its commitment to upholding ASEAN's fundamental principles,' it read.
Timor-Leste, Southeast Asia's youngest nation, applied for ASEAN membership in 2011, nine years after gaining independence on May 20, 2002.
Although the process has been lengthy and challenging, Dili has demonstrated strong commitment in meeting the bloc's stringent membership criteria.
In February, Malaysia announced a contribution of US$200,000 to the ASEAN Secretariat's Timor-Leste Unit in Jakarta to help expedite the membership process.

Durian becomes symbol of unity for three friends
BATU PAHAT: Just like durian flesh neatly packed within its thorny husk, the friendship of three men from different races has remained strong, with the "king of fruits" not only serving as their livelihood but also as a symbol of unity. About a decade ago, Mohd Nasir Majnun, 43, Chew Pei Chuan, 42, and S. Lognathan, 35, worked together as car repossessors before each tried running their own durian stalls in separate locations. But as their stalls were quite close to one another, it became difficult to attract customers. "That situation led us to sit down and agree to set up a joint venture under the name 'Rumah Buah'. Alhamdulillah, it turned out to be a blessing as our stall has since become a favourite spot for customers of all races. "Many praised our effort, saying it serves as a good example of unity," Mohd Nasir told Bernama at their shop in Jalan Chengal, Taman Batu Pahat, recently. Chew said their decision to join forces has since attracted customers from across Malaysia and abroad. "Before this, only locals bought from me. Now, we have customers from Singapore, Thailand and even China. They want to taste Musang King and see for themselves how we work together. "Our story went viral during the Movement Control Order, when we sold durians online and personally delivered them to customers," he said, adding that they now sell up to three tonnes of durians daily, including Musang King, kampung, kahwin, IOI, Black Thorn and D13 varieties. Meanwhile, Lognathan said their cooperation continues beyond the durian season, as they also sell other local fruits such as pineapples and dragon fruit sourced from nearby farmers, as well as fresh coconut water. "We also carry out charitable activities, especially during festive seasons, by sharing part of our earnings with the underprivileged. "Every Hari Raya Aidilfitri, Chinese New Year and Deepavali, we make sure to contribute to those in need," said Lognathan, fondly known as Uda among his friends.

'Malam Himpunan Dan Selawat Malaysiaku Bersama Gaza' At Dataran Merdeka On Aug 24
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 17 (Bernama) -- The "Malam Himpunan dan Selawat Malaysiaku Bersama Gaza" gathering will be held at Dataran Merdeka here on Aug 24 in conjunction with the Sumud Nusantara Carnival 2025. The three-day carnival, organised by MAPIM Malaysia and Cinta Gaza Malaysia in strategic collaboration with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission, the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia and MyAqsaDefender, will take place from Aug 22. According to a spokesman of the organising secretariat, next Sunday's programme will begin at 5 pm with the arrival of the Sumud Nusantara Convoy, followed by a public address by Gaza figures and activists, congregational Maghrib prayers, and a special solat hajat led by Sheikh Abdul Karim Omar Al-Fatani Al-Makki. 'The programme will feature a 'Tausiyah Peduli Ummah' (lecture of care for the ummah) by Habib Ali Zainal Abidin Al-Hamid and Perlis Mufti Datuk Dr Mohd Asri Zainul Abidin, followed by a selawat and qasidah recital by the Az Zahir group,' the spokesman told Bernama. Adding to the significance, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is expected to attend and deliver a special address on that night.
