Bahrain Accelerates Infrastructure Drive: Al Fateh Highway Completed Early Alongside 30 Major Projects
The expansion of Al Fateh Highway has been completed four months ahead of schedule, marking one of 30 major road projects delivered as part of the government's infrastructure plan, Works Minister H.E. Ebrahim Al Hawaj announced.
He attributed the swift completion to strong coordination between government bodies and the efforts of ministerial committees overseeing development and infrastructure projects, led by Deputy Prime Minister H.E. Shaikh Khalid bin Abdulla Al Khalifa.
'We have achieved 68% of the government's programme, covering strategic projects such as the Bahrain International Exhibition and Convention Centre, road networks, power grids, and improvements in healthcare and education,' Al Hawaj said.
As part of the roads initiative, four major project packages have been completed, delivering nearly 30 schemes, including new road links and resurfacing of existing routes. Al Fateh Highway stands out as a major milestone, having been finished well before its deadline.
Infrastructure Prioritised
Al Hawaj highlighted that after discussions between lawmakers and ministers, it was decided that infrastructure—including roads, drainage, and municipal projects—would be given top priority.
The works were divided into several phases, including the construction of new roads, widening and resurfacing existing streets, and implementing urgent fixes to alleviate traffic congestion. These urgent improvements were grouped into four packages covering 48 projects, of which nearly 30 have already been completed.
Another significant project was the Muharraq Ring Road, where traffic began moving eight months ahead of schedule.
Al Hawaj further noted that roadworks continued throughout the summer, with resurfacing crews improving streets across all governorates to enhance Bahrain's road infrastructure.

Muharraq-Bahrain Bay bridge and five major road projects set to begin
Five major road projects, including a new bridge between Muharraq and Bahrain Bay, are set to begin, the Works Minister, His Excellency Ebrahim Al Hawaj, has said. The aim is to ease pressure on traffic and expand key highways by 2030. Al Hawaj listed the projects as the widening of Al Budaiya Highway, Dry Dock Highway, and Shaikh Jaber Al Ahmad Al Sabah Highway, along with the construction of the Fourth Muharraq Bridge and a new flyover at Falcon Intersection. Written reply In a written reply to MP Mohammed Al Ahmed, he set out what each involves. First is the road to Bahrain International Airport. A new bridge is planned at Falcon Intersection, linking northbound traffic from Shaikh Khalifa Al Kabeer Highway to the terminal. Lanes The second involves Al Budaiya Highway. It will be widened to three lanes in both directions. Four roundabouts will be removed and replaced with traffic lights. That alone is expected to raise capacity from 80,000 vehicles a day to 140,000. Third is the Fourth Muharraq Bridge. It will connect Al Sayah and Bahrain Bay via a sea crossing. A single lane will lead directly to Al Fateh Highway. There will also be a signalised junction at ground level. The fourth project concerns Shaikh Jaber Al Ahmad Al Sabah Highway. Crossings The road will be widened from three to five lanes in each direction, with five multi-level crossings to be added. The final project is Dry Dock Highway. It will be widened from three to four lanes between its junction with Shaikh Khalifa Bridge and the Investment Gateway. Multi-level interchanges will also be built at key points. Al Hawaj said three other large roadworks are already in progress, with a combined cost of BD34 million. These are the Janabiya Intersection upgrade, the works at Isa Town North, and the first phase of the Rayya Highway project. New flyover At Janabiya, a new flyover is being built to carry left-turn traffic from Janabiya Highway onto Shaikh Isa bin Salman Highway. It is expected to take up to 57,000 vehicles a day and reduce waiting times by around 70 per cent. Cost: BD10.13 million. In Isa Town, a three-lane flyover is being constructed in both directions. Capacity is set to rise from 12,000 to 22,500 vehicles daily. Cost: BD22.3 million. In Qalali, the first stretch of the Rayya Highway rebuild covers 1.2 kilometres from Avenue 13 to Avenue 50. It is being turned into a dual carriageway with two lanes each way. Capacity is expected to rise from 1,600 to 4,000 vehicles an hour. Cost: BD1.534 million. The minister added that the ministry is continuing work on other infrastructure schemes. These include laying sewage networks, paving unsealed roads, and road maintenance. As for sewage services, he said priorities are based on factors such as building density, technical readiness, and coordination with service bodies and municipal councils. A total of 105 sewage projects have been identified. Thirty-four are under way, serving 5,118 properties. The remaining 71, covering 22,854 properties, will go ahead once design work is finished and tenders are issued.

Bahrain to build flyover connecting key bridges in Muharraq
Bahrain's Works Minister Ebrahim bin Hassan Al Hawaj has announced plans to begin construction on a new flyover connecting Shaikh Isa bin Salman Bridge with Avenue 105 in Busaiteen. The project is part of the ongoing development of the Muharraq Ring Road and the Fourth Bridge initiative, which aims to improve traffic flow in Muharraq Governorate, the minister said. The project involves building a dual-lane flyover in each direction to channel traffic from Manama via Shaikh Isa bin Salman Bridge onto the Muharraq Ring Road along Avenue 105 in Busaiteen. It will also facilitate traffic movement from the Ring Road towards Muharraq city, easing traffic between Manama and Muharraq following the opening of the Muharraq Ring Road in late 2024. The flyover is expected to improve connectivity between the capital and Muharraq, as well as nearby areas such as Busaiteen, Al Sayah, and Diyar Al Muharraq, while reducing congestion at the Shaikh Isa bin Salman Bridge and Al Ghous Street junction. The Ministry of Works has urged road users to cooperate with traffic diversions and guidance for public safety. -TradeArabia News Service. The project will be executed by Nass Contracting.

Bahrain set for major infrastructure revamp with new projects
Bahrain is set for a major infrastructure revamp with new roads and sewage projects lined up across all governorates, reported the Gulf Daily News, our sister publication, citing the works minister. Ibrahim Al Hawaj reaffirmed commitment to implementing strategic projects with a focus on sustainable development. He highlighted the ministry's role in supporting the country's growing urban, developmental and investment activities. He stressed that ongoing and upcoming projects were designed to enhance Bahrain's road networks, upgrade sewage systems and bolster the country's infrastructure capabilities in line with national development goals. 'We are not only building roads and laying pipelines, we are shaping the future of Bahrain's infrastructure to support economic growth, ensure safety and raise the quality of life for all citizens,' said Al Hawaj, in a written response to a parliamentary question by MP Dr Ali Al Nuaimi. According to the minister, 89 per cent of the built properties in the Southern Governorate are currently connected to the main sewerage network. Remarkably, in constituency seven of the same governorate, the coverage has reached 100pc. He noted that work is ongoing to complete the remaining sewer connections across the Southern Governorate. The Ministry of Works recently won the Waste Management Solutions Award for its project on using recycled demolition and construction waste as material in road construction, as part of the Bahrain Smart Cities Summit 2025. The ministry took part in the Summit with two working papers, 'Strategic Guideline for Implementing Intelligent Transportation Systems in Bahrain's Smart City' and 'Sustaining Heritage and Maintaining Historical Infrastructures in Bahrain.' After receiving the award from Shaikh Khalid bin Abdullah Al Khalifa, Deputy Prime Minister, Al Hawaj said this project marks a key step in sustainability efforts, particularly in exploring recycled waste for engineering applications. The ministry successfully constructed the first road of its kind in the Kingdom of Bahrain using modified asphalt made with processed recycled plastic, he stated. Al Hawaj commended the efforts of the ministry's engineers in implementing the project, highlighting that the award reflects the ministry's commitment to adopting innovative methods that preserve and sustain natural resources.
