Bahrain set for major infrastructure revamp with new projects
Ibrahim Al Hawaj reaffirmed commitment to implementing strategic projects with a focus on sustainable development.
He highlighted the ministry's role in supporting the country's growing urban, developmental and investment activities.
He stressed that ongoing and upcoming projects were designed to enhance Bahrain's road networks, upgrade sewage systems and bolster the country's infrastructure capabilities in line with national development goals.
'We are not only building roads and laying pipelines, we are shaping the future of Bahrain's infrastructure to support economic growth, ensure safety and raise the quality of life for all citizens,' said Al Hawaj, in a written response to a parliamentary question by MP Dr Ali Al Nuaimi.
According to the minister, 89 per cent of the built properties in the Southern Governorate are currently connected to the main sewerage network. Remarkably, in constituency seven of the same governorate, the coverage has reached 100pc.
He noted that work is ongoing to complete the remaining sewer connections across the Southern Governorate.
The Ministry of Works recently won the Waste Management Solutions Award for its project on using recycled demolition and construction waste as material in road construction, as part of the Bahrain Smart Cities Summit 2025.
The ministry took part in the Summit with two working papers, 'Strategic Guideline for Implementing Intelligent Transportation Systems in Bahrain's Smart City' and 'Sustaining Heritage and Maintaining Historical Infrastructures in Bahrain.'
After receiving the award from Shaikh Khalid bin Abdullah Al Khalifa, Deputy Prime Minister, Al Hawaj said this project marks a key step in sustainability efforts, particularly in exploring recycled waste for engineering applications.
The ministry successfully constructed the first road of its kind in the Kingdom of Bahrain using modified asphalt made with processed recycled plastic, he stated.
Al Hawaj commended the efforts of the ministry's engineers in implementing the project, highlighting that the award reflects the ministry's commitment to adopting innovative methods that preserve and sustain natural resources.

Sewage works begin in Saraya Abu Quwah after 24-year wait
Work is now in motion to lay a sewage network in Saraya Abu Quwah, Block 457, after a wait stretching back 24 years. The scheme will serve 875 properties and, according to the Ministry of Works, is expected to be completed in the third quarter of 2027. The cost stands at BD5.7 million. Minister of Works Ibrahim Al Hawaj said the project forms part of a wider push to improve the nuts and bolts of public infrastructure across Bahrain, with the aim of keeping pace with growing urban demand. The move follows repeated calls by MP Hassan Ibrahim, who said residents had long relied on tankers and paid monthly out of pocket for basic waste services. He said he spent two years raising the issue with both the Ministry of Works and the Ministry of Finance. State budget He credited Finance and National Economy Minister, His Excellency Shaikh Salman bin Khalifa Al Khalifa, with advancing the matter and securing the project's inclusion in the 2025 to 2026 state budget. The Works Ministry, he added, has already connected large parts of the Northern Governorate to the sewage grid. The rest of Block 457 will be covered based on technical readiness, the number of existing properties, and the availability of funds. Mr Ibrahim called for clear schedules and better coordination across service agencies to avoid similar hold-ups. He said the ministry was continuing to push ahead with infrastructure plans across various areas, guided by the current list of priorities.

Bahrain unveils strategy to boost transport resilience
TDT | Berlin His Excellency Dr. Shaikh Abdulla bin Ahmed Al Khalifa, Minister of Transportation and Telecommunications, highlighted Bahrain's integrated strategy to enhance the resilience and sustainability of its transport and logistics systems. Dr. Shaikh Abdulla bin Ahmed was speaking as participated in the International Transport Forum (ITF) Summit, held in Leipzig, Federal Republic of Germany, from May 21 to 23. Organised under the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), the summit brings together transport ministers, international organisations, private sector representatives, experts, and academics. The Minister outlined the Kingdom's proactive approach, built on three pillars: digital transformation, public-private partnership, and human capital development. He noted that this strategy supports Bahrain Economic Vision 2030 and improves preparedness to address global challenges such as climate change, cyber threats, geopolitical instability, and energy market fluctuations.
