‘Bizarre, against public morals', Bahrain MP expresses concern over adults using pacifiers in public

A senior Member of the Bahrain Parliament has expressed concern over the rising trend in the country, where an increasing number of adults are seen using pacifiers in public. Hassan Ibrahim, the vice-chairman of the Parliament's foreign affairs, defence and national security committee, termed such acts as 'a breach of public morals'. According to Gulf Daily News, Ibrahim has urged the Interior Ministry to investigate this phenomenon following numerous complaints from citizens. 'This is not only bizarre; it is a violation of public morals. People have reported seeing grown men and women driving or stopped at traffic lights with pacifiers in their mouths. This trend, which originated abroad, is now infiltrating our society,' Ibrahim told Gulf Daily News. According to reports, the trend is believed to have originated in China and spread to other countries through social media. In China, some adults are reportedly spending upwards of $70 for adult pacifiers. Some Chinese retailers even claim to be selling as many as 2,000 every month. People are reportedly using adult pacifiers, which are larger than the ones meant for kids, while they are in public, including when they are driving. What makes the trend even more puzzling is that no one really knows why they are doing it. Some studies from China had claimed that adult pacifiers helped relieve stress and anxiety, just like in babies. Some users also claimed that the practice helped them quit smoking. While MPs in Bahrain may have expressed concern over the trend of adults using pacifiers, public opinion is divided. 'Why is this a problem? It harms no one and helps users feel comfortable,' some have argued. On the other hand, some warn that it 'may signal deeper societal or mental health issues,' which they say warrants official intervention.

Bahrain set for major infrastructure revamp with new projects

Bahrain is set for a major infrastructure revamp with new roads and sewage projects lined up across all governorates, reported the Gulf Daily News, our sister publication, citing the works minister. Ibrahim Al Hawaj reaffirmed commitment to implementing strategic projects with a focus on sustainable development. He highlighted the ministry's role in supporting the country's growing urban, developmental and investment activities. He stressed that ongoing and upcoming projects were designed to enhance Bahrain's road networks, upgrade sewage systems and bolster the country's infrastructure capabilities in line with national development goals. 'We are not only building roads and laying pipelines, we are shaping the future of Bahrain's infrastructure to support economic growth, ensure safety and raise the quality of life for all citizens,' said Al Hawaj, in a written response to a parliamentary question by MP Dr Ali Al Nuaimi. According to the minister, 89 per cent of the built properties in the Southern Governorate are currently connected to the main sewerage network. Remarkably, in constituency seven of the same governorate, the coverage has reached 100pc. He noted that work is ongoing to complete the remaining sewer connections across the Southern Governorate. The Ministry of Works recently won the Waste Management Solutions Award for its project on using recycled demolition and construction waste as material in road construction, as part of the Bahrain Smart Cities Summit 2025. The ministry took part in the Summit with two working papers, 'Strategic Guideline for Implementing Intelligent Transportation Systems in Bahrain's Smart City' and 'Sustaining Heritage and Maintaining Historical Infrastructures in Bahrain.' After receiving the award from Shaikh Khalid bin Abdullah Al Khalifa, Deputy Prime Minister, Al Hawaj said this project marks a key step in sustainability efforts, particularly in exploring recycled waste for engineering applications. The ministry successfully constructed the first road of its kind in the Kingdom of Bahrain using modified asphalt made with processed recycled plastic, he stated. Al Hawaj commended the efforts of the ministry's engineers in implementing the project, highlighting that the award reflects the ministry's commitment to adopting innovative methods that preserve and sustain natural resources.
