Click To Pay: Unlocking Qatar's eCommercepotential through smarter, safer payments
What's driving the strong growth of eCommerce in Qatar, even as some payment challengesremain?
The rise of eCommerce in Qatar is being fueled by consumers' increasing comfort with online platforms and a growing digital infrastructure. Visa's latest Checkout Friction Report shows that one in four respondents now shop online for groceries every day, and for categories like fashion, entertainment, and electronics, many shop at least oncea month.
However, while adoption is high, the online checkout experience remains a sticking point for many. Common frustrations, especially having to manually enter card details and concerns about payment security, continue to affect both satisfaction and conversion. Addressing these pain points presents a significant opportunity for retailers to boost loyalty and revenue.
The report shows many respondents would shop more with one click checkout and biometrics. Is Click to Pay the answer, and is it already available in Qatar?
Yes, Click to Pay is already live in Qatar. In fact, Qatar National Bank (QNB) was the first acquirer bank globally to launch Visa's Click to Pay with biometric authentication and Qatar Islamic Bank (QIB) was the first issuer bank in both Qatar and the GCC to launch the service in partnership with Visa. This feature eliminates the need for consumers to repeatedly enter card and personal details, using biometric authentication on the shopper's device to speed up and secure the process.
The demand for this kind of innovation is strong. Seventy-one percent of respondents said they would likely use Click to Pay with Biometrics, and 80 percent said they would shop more frequently if a one-click checkout was available.
Security is a key concern for many shoppers especially when it comes to biometric data. How can merchants ensure security of such data?
Security is top of mind for Qatar's online shoppers, with 68 percent worried about fraud and 58 percent uneasy about storing card details across multiple sites. Concerns around biometric data are understandable and increasingly relevant.
Click to Pay addresses this by using Visa Payment Passkey, which authenticates users through their device's built-in biometrics like fingerprint or face ID. Crucially, this biometric data never leaves the user's device and isn't shared with merchants or payment networks, reducing the risk of misuse.
Tokenization adds another layer of protection by replacing card details with a secure, encrypted token, meaning actual card information is never exposed during transactions.
Merchants also play a critical role by following data security standards like Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS), ensuring secure storage, encryption, and access control.
Protecting sensitive data takes a layered approach – combining secure tech, industry compliance, and a strong culture of data responsibility across the payments ecosystem.
What should small businesses and eCommerce sites take away from this study? Can improved checkout experiences help attract more customers?
Absolutely. The findings of the Checkout Friction Report are clear. A smoother, more secure checkout process directly impacts customer satisfaction, loyalty, and ultimately, sales. Small businesses and eCommerce sites should see this as a call to action. By embracing advanced solutions like Click to Pay, streamlining the payment journey, and prioritizing security, they not only improve conversion rates but also build long term trust with their customer base.
With digital transformation high on Qatar's national agenda, now is the perfect time for merchants, especially smaller players, to align with evolving consumer expectations and stand out in an increasingly competitive eCommerce landscape.

US pauses most visa applications from Zimbabwe
The United States has announced a pause on all routine visa applications for citizens of Zimbabwe. The State Department said in a statement on Thursday that the US embassy in Zimbabwe would pause all routine visa services starting from Friday 'while we address concerns with the Government of Zimbabwe'. The embassy described the measure as temporary and part of the Trump administration's efforts to 'prevent visa overstay and misuse'. Most diplomatic and official visas would be exempt from the pause, the US said. The US has enforced new travel restrictions on citizens from several African countries under President Donald Trump's broader immigration enforcement policies. In June, the US put in place travel bans on citizens from 12 countries, seven of them in Africa. It increased restrictions on seven other nations, three of them African. The US has also demanded that 36 countries, the majority of them in Africa, improve their vetting of travellers or face a ban on their citizens visiting the United States. Zimbabwe, Malawi and Zambia were all on that list of 36 countries asked to improve their citizens' travel documentation and take steps to address the status of their nationals who are in the US illegally. 'The Trump Administration is protecting our nation and our citizens by upholding the highest standards of national security and public safety through our visa process,' the US State Department said on Thursday. The announcement came days after the US unveiled a pilot project requiring citizens of two other African countries, Malawi and Zambia, to pay a bond of up to $15,000 for tourist or business visas. The bond will be forfeited if the applicant stays in the US after their visa expires. The new bond policy announced on Tuesday requires Malawians and Zambians to pay bonds of $5,000, $10,000 or $15,000 as part of their application for a tourist or business visa to the US. Under the programme, citizens of those countries must also arrive and depart at one of three airports: Boston's Logan International Airport, New York's John F Kennedy International Airport or Dulles International Airport near Washington, DC. The visa bond pilot programme will start on August 20, the State Department said.

Swiss entrepreneur invites institutions, individuals from Qatar to Davos event
Ashraf Siddiqui Doha Anis Khan, a Swiss national and CEO of Zurich-based Intrapass GmbH, and organiser of the Global SME Summit has called upon Qatari institutions, entrepreneurs, and youth leaders to participate in the event, taking place from September 3–5, 2025, at the Davos Congress Centre, Switzerland. He made the statement while talking exclusively to Qatar Tribune. Originally from Bangladesh, Khan has lived in Switzerland for more than 50 years. A seasoned expert with a distinguished background in aviation security, he founded GSBH with an aim to create a global platform exclusively for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Motivated by the lack of international attention given to SMEs despite their massive contribution, approximately 70% to global economic growth, Khan decided to act. His aim is to give SMEs the visibility, tools, and networks they need to thrive on the global stage. Currently visiting Qatar, Khan intends to meet concerned institutions and entrepreneurs to invite them to the Global SME Summit in Davos. He said that it will be the first of its kind conference dedicated entirely to SMEs in a forum traditionally reserved for large corporations and policymakers. He said that the summit will feature keynote addresses, panel discussions, masterclasses, and networking sessions, addressing themes such as access to finance, entrepreneurship, innovation, resilience, and long-term growth. Khan's personal journey—from arriving in Switzerland with just $200 to leading a successful international business—is a testament to the power of perseverance and vision. Now, through GSBH, he is building a platform for others to achieve similar success, regardless of background. The initiative has already received strong support internationally, including from institutions in Bangladesh, Pakistan, Italy, and Thailand. Now it is seeking to attract the entrepreneurs from Qatar. Khan has praised Qatar's SME development efforts, especially those led by Qatar Development Bank and Qatar Financial Centre, among others which continue to support youth and technical professionals. 'We urge academic institutions, chambers of commerce, development agencies, and aspiring entrepreneurs—especially youth—to engage with this global movement. Your participation can help shape a future where SMEs are recognized not just as contributors, but as drivers of global economic growth,' Khan stressed. 'Let us come together in Davos to empower the next generation of entrepreneurs,' he concluded
