Gerik bus tragedy: Cops record teacher's statement over allegedly offensive remarks
IPOH: Police have recorded the statement of a male teacher who allegedly posted offensive remarks on social media related to the fatal crash involving 15 Universiti Perguruan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students in Gerik on June 9.
Manjung OCPD Asst Comm Hasbullah Abd Rahman said the teacher came to the Manjung district police headquarters at 10am Monday (June 16)to provide his statement, with the process lasting about three hours.
"We will refer the case to the Deputy Public Prosecutor after the investigation paper is completed," he told Bernama when contacted.
The case is classified under Section 504 of the Penal Code, which deals with intentional insult with an intent to provoke a breach of peace, and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 for improper use of network facilities or network services.
Hasbullah was reported as saying that police received a report on June 11 regarding the post, which was made from a Facebook account under the name "Khalid Yunus". - Bernama

Penang pensioner loses over RM800,000 to online investment scam
GEORGE TOWN: A pensioner lost over RM800,000 to an online investment scam advertised on a social media platform. State police chief Comm Datuk Hamzah Ahmad said the Central Seberang Perai commercial crime department received a complaint from a 55-year-old man regarding the scam on June 12. "The victim was deceived in an online investment scam involving a company known as Freeman Ltd, resulting in a total loss of RM827,120," he said in a statement on Monday (June 16). Comm Hamzah said the victim revealed that in early April 2025, he came across an investment advertisement on the social media application promising high returns. He said the victim then began communicating with a suspect, a woman, through the WhatsApp application. Comm Hamzah said the investment offered promised a return of 7% for each capital invested within a short period of time. Enticed by the offer, the victim was instructed to download the Freeman Ltd. application, register as a member, and make investments through the platform. Comm Hamzah said subsequently, between April 19 and May 26 this year, the victim made 22 money transfer transactions into six bank accounts belonging to different companies. "The victim only realised he had been scammed when he was unable to withdraw the profits displayed on the Freeman Ltd application, which amounted to RM23.2mil," he said,adding the victim then lodged a police report. The case is investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating. In another incident, a 56-year-old former factory technician was also duped by an online investment scam that promised a high return. Comm Hamzah said the scam, which was advertised on social media, caused the victim to lost RM321,250. "Around December 2024, the victim came across an investment advertisement offering 30% return on any invested capital within a three-month period. The victim then began communicating with a female suspect through the WhatsApp application," he said. Interested in the offer, the victim was instructed to download an application called Demax Global, register as a member, and proceed with the investment. Comm Hamzah said on March 21 this year, the victim made the first fund transfer amounting to RM20,000 through the application and within less than three months, the victim received a return of RM14,150. Subsequently, between March 27 and 3 June 3, the victim carried out 11 fund transfer transactions into four different company-owned bank accounts involved in the scheme. Comm Hamzah said the victim realised he had been cheated when he was unable to withdraw his profit of RM280,000 that was displayed in the application. "The victim then lodged a police report at North Seberang Perai police headquarters on June 12," he added. The case is investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.

JPSM Enhances Forestry Forensic Guidelines
MELAKA, June 16 (Bernama) -- The Forestry Department of Peninsular Malaysia (JPSM) has enhanced its Forestry Forensic Guidelines to ensure a more practical and relevant approach to crime scene management, said its director-general, Datuk Zahari Ibrahim. He said the improvements would also ensure more efficient handling of case exhibits and more thorough preparations of investigation papers. According to him, the updated guidelines include several key enhancements, among them the appointment of a Science Officer to lead the Forestry Forensics team, the roles and responsibilities of the team leader, and detailed procedures for managing crime scenes and handling evidence samples. 'Several elements have been removed…including the requirement for rough sketches, the need to collect biological samples, conducting final site surveys and physical evidence evaluation. 'The new guidelines are an update to the Director-General of Forestry's Circular No. 1 of 2017 on the Forestry Forensic Guidelines,' he said during the opening of the engagement session to empower forestry forensics here today. Earlier, Zahari launched the updated Forestry Forensic Guidelines. Chemistry Department director-general Marhayani Md Saad and JPSM deputy director-general (Operations and Technical) Mohd Radhi Chu Abdullah were also present. Elaborating, Zahari stated that the guidelines serve as a reference for the JPSM and state Forestry Departments in conducting forensic work to investigate forest-related offences under relevant legislation. Meanwhile, he said the engagement session is an initiative stemming from the note of cooperation between JPSM and the Chemistry Department, which was signed on Oct 19, 2022, adding that it stands as further proof of both agencies' commitment to strengthening the country's capabilities in enforcement and forest conservation through scientific and data-driven approaches. 'It is highly significant in reinforcing the application of forensic science as a vital tool in forestry law enforcement while also contributing to more transparent, efficient, and integrity-driven forest governance in Peninsular Malaysia, which aligns with JPSM's new vision to become a leading authority in sustainable tropical forest management,' he said.

Sepang Police Raid Five Premises Suspected Of Conducting Illegal Bitcoin Mining Activities
SEPANG, June 16 (Bernama) -- Police raided five premises suspected of conducting illegal Bitcoin mining activities during a special operation on the cryptocurrency mining machines here last Friday. Sepang district police chief ACP Norhizam Bahaman said five separate teams conducted the raids simultaneously, between 10 am and 7 pm, on three premises in Bandar Baru Salak Tinggi and two in Putra Perdana. He said the investigation was initiated by him a few months ago in addition to complaints from the public. The special operation also involved a special team from the Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) headquarters in Bangsar, Kuala Lumpur. Preliminary investigations found that each premises could generate profits of around RM15,000 to RM20,000 per month through illegal bitcoin mining. "We were informed that a syndicate had stolen electricity supply to carry out the Bitcoin mining activities, with losses to TNB amounting to RM86,089 a month,' he said in a press conference here today. He said the total losses incurred by TNB in the Sepang area from January to this month are estimated to be around RM516,534. Norhizam said that as a result of the raids, 143 Bitcoin mining machines and items used for that activity, worth more than RM171,600, were seized. The police have arrested four local men, aged between 20 and 40 years old, who acted as guards of the premises, on one of the premises in Putra Perdana.
