JPSM Enhances Forestry Forensic Guidelines
MELAKA, June 16 (Bernama) -- The Forestry Department of Peninsular Malaysia (JPSM) has enhanced its Forestry Forensic Guidelines to ensure a more practical and relevant approach to crime scene management, said its director-general, Datuk Zahari Ibrahim.
He said the improvements would also ensure more efficient handling of case exhibits and more thorough preparations of investigation papers.
According to him, the updated guidelines include several key enhancements, among them the appointment of a Science Officer to lead the Forestry Forensics team, the roles and responsibilities of the team leader, and detailed procedures for managing crime scenes and handling evidence samples.
'Several elements have been removed…including the requirement for rough sketches, the need to collect biological samples, conducting final site surveys and physical evidence evaluation.
'The new guidelines are an update to the Director-General of Forestry's Circular No. 1 of 2017 on the Forestry Forensic Guidelines,' he said during the opening of the engagement session to empower forestry forensics here today.
Earlier, Zahari launched the updated Forestry Forensic Guidelines. Chemistry Department director-general Marhayani Md Saad and JPSM deputy director-general (Operations and Technical) Mohd Radhi Chu Abdullah were also present.
Elaborating, Zahari stated that the guidelines serve as a reference for the JPSM and state Forestry Departments in conducting forensic work to investigate forest-related offences under relevant legislation.
Meanwhile, he said the engagement session is an initiative stemming from the note of cooperation between JPSM and the Chemistry Department, which was signed on Oct 19, 2022, adding that it stands as further proof of both agencies' commitment to strengthening the country's capabilities in enforcement and forest conservation through scientific and data-driven approaches.
'It is highly significant in reinforcing the application of forensic science as a vital tool in forestry law enforcement while also contributing to more transparent, efficient, and integrity-driven forest governance in Peninsular Malaysia, which aligns with JPSM's new vision to become a leading authority in sustainable tropical forest management,' he said.

Two Retirees Lose Over RM1 Mln To Online Investment Scams
-- Photograph for illustrative purposes GEORGE TOWN, June 16 (Bernama) -- Two retirees lost over RM1 million after falling victim to online investment scams recently, according to Penang police. Penang police chief Datuk Hamzah Ahmad said in a statement that in the first case, the Seberang Perai Tengah District Police Headquarters received a report from a 55-year-old man on June 12, alleging that he had been scammed by an online investment company for RM827,120. 'In early April, the victim came across an investment advertisement on Facebook promising high returns and subsequently got in touch with a woman…via WhatsApp. 'The victim was promised a seven per cent return on each investment made,' he said, adding that the man was told to download the company's app to register as a member and invest through the platform. Hamzah said the victim made 22 fund transfers into six different company accounts between April 19 and May 26. 'He realised he had been scammed after being unable to withdraw profits totalling RM23,241,952 as shown on the investment app and subsequently lodged a police report,' he said. In a separate case, he stated that a 56-year-old retired factory technician lost RM321,250 after falling victim to another online investment scam, adding that the victim lodged a police report on June 12 at the Seberang Perai Utara District Police Headquarters. Hamzah stated that around December of last year, the victim came across an investment advertisement on Instagram that promised high returns. He then contacted a female suspect via WhatsApp, who promised a 30 per cent return within three months. He said that on March 21, the victim made the first fund transfer of RM20,000 through the company's app, and within less than three months, he received RM14,150 in profits. 'He made 11 additional fund transfers between March 27 and June 3 into four different company accounts linked to the scheme, but realised he had been scammed after he could not withdraw RM280,000 in purported profits and was instead asked by the suspect to pay an RM120,000 withdrawal fee,' he added. MACC Arrests Melaka Local Authority Director Over Alleged RM50 Million Fund Misuse
KUALA LUMPUR, June 16 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) in Melaka has arrested the director of the finance department of a local authority in the state on suspicion of abusing his power by using RM50 million of the authority's funds to invest in shares. According to a source, the male suspect, in his 50s, was detained at around 1 pm today when he appeared to provide a statement at the MACC Melaka office. 'The suspect is believed to have committed the act between 2020 and 2023 by appointing his wife—who works at a bank—as the investment agent for share investments amounting to approximately RM50 million.

SMG Project Uncovers Over 10 Bodies In Sungai Klang, Including Infant
SHAH ALAM, June 16 (Bernama) – In addition to the challenge of removing 94,000 metric tonnes of waste from Sungai Klang, the flood mitigation project under the Selangor Maritime Gateway (SMG) initiative has also uncovered more than 10 bodies, including that of an infant, since its implementation began in November 2022. Landasan Lumayan Sdn Bhd (LLSB) managing director, Syaiful Azmen Nordin said three bodies were discovered over three consecutive days in the Kota Kemuning area in May, which forced excavation and river-deepening works to be temporarily halted. 'So far, we have handed over more than 10 bodies, including an infant, to the police and fire department for further investigation. 'Typically, the bodies are found in good condition and largely intact despite being unclothed, including the infant, who was discovered inside an interceptor designed to trap surface debris,' he said. Speaking to reporters after visiting the flood mitigation project site in Kota Kemuning today, Syaiful Azmen said the company works closely with police and fire authorities to conduct site investigations, in part to ensure halted works can resume as soon as possible. He added that aside from the discovery of bodies, the project implementation team also faces the challenge of severe river pollution, having encountered various large discarded items such as refrigerators, lorry tyres, sofas, beds, mattresses and motorcycles at the bottom of Sungai Klang. He noted that these discoveries – both bodies and waste – have somewhat disrupted or slowed the ongoing dredging and river-deepening operations. 'Nonetheless, these findings will not break our spirit in completing the mission to widen and deepen Sungai Klang, with the aim of increasing water capacity by at least 40 per cent by the end of this year,' he said. -- BERNAMA
