Tanner Houck preparing for the long rehabilitation from Tommy John surgery

Houck had non-surgical alternatives available, including platelet-rich plasma and stem-cell treatment, to try to fix his arm. But those would have merely been 'delaying the inevitable,' he said, so he opted for the operation.

'This was the decision that I made, just for longevity of the career,' Houck, 29, said Sunday. 'I want to pitch for another 10 years, 10-plus years. Looking at it from a longevity standpoint, this is the road we decided to take.

'It's about trusting the day-to-day work. It's going to be long. It's going to be hard. But I'm ready for it. I've made peace with it myself. I had a lot of long conversations with my wife — early mornings, late nights talking about it.'
Already, he has sought advice from his peers.
'They all said the same thing: You'll come back better from this,' he said. 'I'm ready to get it going.'
Houck this week will go to the Dallas area, where Dr.
Keith Meister
will do the surgery. The rehab will be 12-14 months minimum, making Houck questionable to take the mound in 2026.

That marks the end of a lost year for Houck, who had an 8.04 ERA in nine starts. In mid-May, he landed on the injured list with a right flexor pronator strain in the forearm, which sometimes is a prelude to UCL issues.
Houck sat out awhile, went on a rehab assignment, struggled, started to pitch better, and seemingly was on the brink of a return. But over the All-Star break, two months into his IL stint, he encountered more problems — in his hand and his tricep.
The Sox sent him for another MRI, which showed significantly worse damage in his forearm/elbow — much worse than the inflammation from the previous test.
Red Sox chief baseball officer
Craig Breslow
said it is hard to know whether the beginnings of the injury were what caused Houck problems when he pitched early in the season.
'A little bit surprised [with this outcome], just because it seemed like he was making progress through the rehab process,' Breslow said. 'It felt like we were turning the corner … It felt like we needed to make sure there was nothing we were missing. It turns out there was something pretty significant going on.'
A year removed from being an All-Star, Houck is relegated to observer. He called it 'just a little time away.'
'It's unfortunate. It sucks,' he said. 'It's a fun team to watch, it's a fun team to be around. Just knowing I'm not going to be a part of it for the rest of the year is hard.'

Setback for Sandoval
One instance of a Tommy John rehab not going so smoothly:
Patrick Sandoval
.
Breslow said he does not expect Sandoval, who had surgery last summer, to pitch this season following a recent setback. Sandoval for now isn't throwing at all, though the Sox want him to fully ramp up and face batters before he goes into the offseason.
'Nothing out of the ordinary for a Tommy John rehab process, just a little bit of a delay as we've seen with a number of guys,' Breslow said.
Similarly, manager
Alex Cora
said he is not confident
Liam Hendriks
(right hip injury) will make it back this season.
Justin Slaten
, working his way back from a nerve issue in his neck/right shoulder, was 'upbeat' Sunday after his first bullpen session Saturday, Cora said.
'Hard to put a timetable on it, just given the topsy-turvy nature of the recovery to date,' Breslow said.
Down the depth chart
In talking up the club's rotation depth, Breslow highlighted prospect
David Sandlin
— a righthander recently promoted to Triple A Worcester — as a candidate to pitch out of the major league bullpen down the stretch.
'Sandlin is a guy who comes to mind,' he said. 'It's really power stuff. Maybe with a simplified approach, he could come in and overwhelm hitters with the stuff. Those conversations are ongoing.'
Sandlin's fastball averaged 95.3 miles per hour and maxed out at 98.1 with Worcester on Friday.
Breslow on Bregman
Breslow declined to comment on the state of
Alex Bregman
contract talks (if they exist). 'It's always great when somebody wants to be here,' he said. 'I think probably best to keep those conversations internal outside of being incredibly appreciative and excited about what he's brought here on the field and also off the field, what he's meant to some of the younger guys. When appropriate, we'll approach that' …
Connor Wong
, 0 for 2 with a sacrifice fly Sunday, will catch again Monday, per Cora. That will be his first time starting consecutive games since May 2-3. 'It's been a while, huh?' Wong said. Cora: 'It's important for his confidence and for his at-bats' …
Kristian Campbell
was out of Worcester's lineup after jamming his right thumb Saturday. Breslow said he is day-to-day … The Red Sox are 3-0 in games that start before noon.

2025 WNBA trade deadline: Players on the move, grades for every deal
The 2025 WNBA trade deadline is quickly approaching, and there are several players to monitor as movement heats up before the deadline on Thursday, Aug. 7. Only a couple of players have moved so far with DiJonai Carrington, last year's Most Improved Player, going to the 2024 WNBA runner-up Minnesota Lynx and 2025 All-Star Brittney Sykes to the Seattle Storm. Here are a few players that could move and here's a round up of the 2025 WNBA trade deadline deals so far: Aug. 5: Seattle Storm trade for Washington Mystics guard Brittney Sykes Storm get: Mystics get: Sykes is averaging 15.4 points, 4.3 assists and 1.2 steals per game, while shooting 31.8% from beyond the arc. The 5-foot-9 guard received her first All-Star selection this season and has four WNBA all-defensive team selections during her nine-year career, which also includes stints with the Atlanta Dream and Los Angeles Sparks. She signed with the Mystics as a free agent ahead of the 2023 season. Read more about the trade here. Adding Sykes to Seattle does a few things. It gives the Storm a versatile defender who plays larger than they are, plus a player who can create for themselves and others. Sykes will all but certainly be inserted into the starting rotation, and that should be a very nice one-two punch with Wheeler. Additionally, Seattle now has fewer excuses not to succeed. Heading into next season, the Mystics now have three first-round picks. That's not including the other selections they have in the 2026 WNBA draft. Essentially, Washington would have plenty of options to choose from, including Notre Dame guard Olivia Miles, UCLA Bruins center Lauren Betts and UConn Huskies guard Azzi Fudd. READ MORE: Full Sykes trade grades from Meghan L. Hall Aug. 3: Minnesota Lynx trade for Dallas Wings guard DiJonai Carrington Lynx get: Wings get: It is the second trade in a matter of months for Carrington, who was traded to the Wings from the Connecticut Sun back in February. The former second-round pick out of Baylor is averaging 10.4 points, 5.1 rebounds and 1.8 assists this season. Read more about the trade here. Bringing in Carrington does a few things for Reeve's squad. First, it adds valuable guard and wing depth. Carrington is more comfortable as a wing, but could take over point guard duties if necessary. She can even start if they need her to, which is huge. With that in mind, veteran Kayla McBride has to be jumping for joy right now. Carrington will fit nicely as depth behind her, and because she's an excellent defender, it takes a lot more pressure off McBride to have to be everything all at once. Guard Diamond Miller now has a new place to get more minutes and should thrive with the Wings. Veteran Karlie Samuelson is out for the season with an injury, but once healthy, there's a chance she could add quality minutes, too. Also, future draft stock never hurts. The Wings are somewhat leaning into a soft rebuild and should continue making moves for the future. READ MORE: Full Carrington trade grades from Meghan L. Hall When is the trade deadline? The 2025 WNBA trade deadline is at 3 p.m. ET Thursday, Aug. 7. After that, teams cannot make trades for the remainder of the season. Why aren't many trades made in the WNBA? The trade deadline in the WNBA is not traditionally as busy as those in the NFL, NBA or MLB. The WNBA's hard salary cap ($1,507,100 per team) has no flexibility, meaning a team can't go over. That means team have to be able to make the money work in any trade dollar for dollar. Even with addition of the Golden State Valkyries, there are only 13 teams with 12 players each in the league. With fewer players, there are fewer trades.

Mets took big swing for Byron Buxton at trade deadline — but were shut down

Try it free The Mets upgraded in center field by trading for Cedric Mullins at the trade deadline, but not before swinging for the fences. The franchise checked in with Byron Buxton's agent, B.B. Abbott, to see if the Twins' superstar outfielder would waive his no-trade clause and accept a move out of Minnesota, according to a report from The Athletic. Advertisement Buxton and Abbott were said to have 'routinely waved off interested clubs in July' as the longtime Twin desired to stay in Minnesota, which he stated over the All-Star break. 3 Minnesota Twins' Byron Buxton circles the bases after hitting a home run off of Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Shohei Ohtani during the first inning of a baseball game in Los Angeles on Monday, July 21, 2025. AP 'It's always good to be wanted,' Buxton said during a press conference in Atlanta. 'Don't get me wrong. But the only place I want is Minnesota. All of my choices are easy. I ain't got but one place on my mind. That's how it'll be.' Advertisement Buxton, 31, is enjoying one of the best seasons of his career, hitting .282/.343/.561 with 23 home runs and 17 stolen bases and excellent defense in center field. He's spent his entire big league career with the Twins after being selected first overall in the 2012 MLB Draft. The two-time All-Star was thought of as a potential trade candidate after the Twins' season went sideways before he made his stance on his no-trade clause clear in mid-July. At least six teams inquired with Abbott about Buxton, The Athletic added, although the Mets and Braves reportedly showed the most interest. Charles Wenzelberg/New York Post 3 Minnesota Twins' Byron Buxton hits a double against the Tampa Bay Rays in the seventh inning on Friday, July 4, 2025, in Minneapolis. AP The Mets instead pivoted to Mullins and improving their bullpen, trading for Tyler Rogers, Ryan Helsley and Gregory Soto. The Twins were one of the busiest teams at the deadline, trading 10 active Major League players from their roster in seven deals, including sending Carlos Correa back to Houston.

Where does Sixers' Tyrese Maxey rank among point guards in the NBA?
Philadelphia 76ers guard Tyrese Maxey continues to take steps forward in his NBA career. After being the No. 21 pick of the 2020 draft, Maxey has morphed into an All-Star guard and has taken his place as one of the rising stars in the league. As Maxey and the Sixers move forward, he will be looking to find his efficiency again in the 2025-26 season. He averaged 26.3 points, 6.1 assists, and 3.3 rebounds, but he shot only 43.7% from the floor and 33.7% from deep. Both of those numbers are below his career norms so he will look to find his efficient offensive game again. HoopsHype ranked the top 26 point guards in the league and Maxey came in ranked No. 10 on the list: A volume scorer with good playmaking ability, Tyrese Maxey missed out on All-Star honors last season, but he performed at that level. Maxey even had a career season on the defensive end, averaging nearly two steals per contest, playing the role of chaotic pest well on the less glamorous end of the floor. Maxey's efficiency did take a hit last year, and playing without former league MVP Joel Embiid may have played a role in that, as the former Kentucky star boasted a 56.2 true shooting percentage in 2024-25, his lowest mark since his rookie season. The Sixers will be looking to Maxey to lead this team back into title contention. Of course, everything comes down to the health of Joel Embiid, but Philadelphia will be looking to get itself back on track to move forward in the Eastern Conference.
