Patna: Days after Union minister Chirag Paswan announced his decision to contest the upcoming
Bihar assembly elections
, his party, Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas), on Thursday declared it has begun large-scale poll preparations for all 243 seats in the state.
The decision was taken during the state working committee meeting chaired by state president Raju Tiwari and attended by the party's Bihar in charge, Arun Bharti, who is also Chirag's brother-in-law.
The LJP last made a significant impact in the Feb-March 2005 assembly elections when it won 29 seats after contesting 178. It played the role of "kingmaker" but chose not to support either the RJD-led alliance or the NDA under Nitish, which eventually led to President's Rule.
Six months later, the NDA formed the govt following the by-elections.
Thursday's meeting, attended by MPs Arun Bharti, Veena Devi, Shambhavi Choudhary, parliamentary board chairman Hulas Pandey and national general secretary Satyanand Sharma, passed eight proposals. What stood out was the party's declaration of preparing for all seats in the 2025 elections.
"The party unanimously passes the proposal that, in line with the public statement of its national president Chirag Paswan, it will prepare with full strength and enthusiasm for all 243 assembly seats for the upcoming assembly elections," the resolution said.
The party also announced it will hold a 'Bahujan-Bhim Sankalp Samagam' on June 29 at Rajgir in Nalanda, the home district of CM Nitish Kumar. Chirag will address the rally. "The meeting is aimed at strengthening constitutional rights and social justice and increasing political awareness among the deprived classes," the party said. "It will serve as both a platform for organisational expansion and worker empowerment and a strategic move ahead of the upcoming elections," it added.
The meeting voiced serious concern over the "rising crimes" against dalits and criticised the state administration. It also expressed alarm over the cancellation of MGNREGA job cards without prior notice, which it said had pushed many dalits, OBCs and deprived communities into a survival crisis.

Vijay Rupani re-scheduled his London visit from June 5 to 12 due to Ludhiana (West) by-elections

CHANDIGARH: Former Chief Minister of Gujarat and Punjab Affairs-in-charge of BJP Vijay Rupani, who was among the 241 passengers killed in the tragic Air India crash in Ahmedabad on Thursday afternoon, has been involved in Punjab politics for the last three years. In fact, he re-scheduled his visit to London from June 5 to June 12 due to the Ludhiana (West) by-elections. The constituency goes to polling on June 19, and the result will be announced on June 23. Rupani was specifically brought by the saffron party to take charge of the state in September 2022 after the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) ended its alliance with the BJP. During this time, BJP's electoral performance improved. The party's vote share rose to 18.56 per cent from 6.6 percent in last year's parliamentary elections. Under his leadership, the party had been taking on the AAP-led Punjab Government over many issues, including the law and order and the drug menace. State BJP leadership described him as an ``acceptable, humble and down-to-earth human being' who deeply connected with the people across all levels of the state administration. He had planned to travel to London on June 5 to meet his daughter but his travel plans were delayed due to the Ludhiana (west) by-election. His wife, Anjali Rupani, had already left for London on June 5. The state party leaders recalled that Rupani was campaigning for the upcoming Ludhiana West assembly bypoll for weeks and had been diligently carrying out his responsibilities, including attending the filing of nomination papers by the party candidate Jiwan Gupta on June 2 from Ludhiana (West). On June 9, he had exuded confidence that Gupta would win the bypoll with a huge margin. Known as a protégé of Amit Shah, Rupani was a first-time MLA from Rajkot (West) when he became the Chief Minister of Gujarat.

'Feels Unreal That He's No Longer With Us': Vijay Rupani's Kolkata-Based Cousin To News18

Last Updated: Rupani, who served as the chief minister of Gujarat from August 2016 to September 2021, was among the people killed in the Ahmedabad Air India crash on Thursday Among the casualties of Thursday's horrific Air India crash in Ahmedabad was former Gujarat chief minister Vijay Rupani, leaving his family and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in deep sorrow. Vijay Rupani's cousin, Vipul Rupani, who resides in Kolkata, spoke exclusively with CNN-News18, expressing his shock and grief. 'We first heard about the crash on TV news. Initially, we couldn't believe it. We then reached out to the family, and it was devastating to have it confirmed. Some family members have already left for Ahmedabad, and we'll be going shortly. There are a lot of formalities to take care of," he said, visibly shaken. Vipul fondly remembered Vijay Rupani as the pillar of their family, highlighting his warmth and generosity. 'He was like an elder brother to all of us—always helpful and cordial. Just last year, he visited Kolkata and spent more than three hours with us. We had such a wonderful time together. He was truly a gentleman and deeply committed to social work." The London-bound Air India flight, AI171, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner (registration VT-ANB), carrying 242 passengers and crew, crashed into a medical college complex shortly after taking off from the Ahmedabad airport. In an early morning post on X at 12.41 am on Friday, Air India confirmed that 241 people had perished in the crash. A police official told news agency PTI that 265 bodies had been brought to the civil hospital. The plane had crashed into the mess area of a medical college hostel, causing what appears to be at least two dozen fatalities on the ground. Expressing his profound grief, Vipul added, 'We really don't know how we'll come to terms with this. It feels unreal that he's no longer with us." Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday met the family of the former Gujarat CM in Ahmedabad. 'It is unimaginable that Vijaybhai is not in our midst. I've known him for decades. We worked together, shoulder to shoulder, including during some of the most challenging times. Vijaybhai was humble and hardworking, firmly committed to the Party's ideology. Rising up the ranks, he held various responsibilities in the Organisation and went on to serve diligently as Gujarat's Chief Minister," PM Modi said in a post on X. Rupani served as the chief minister of Gujarat from August 2016 to September 2021, before resigning ahead of the 2022 state elections. First Published: June 13, 2025, 17:36 IST

Andhra Pradesh Launches Scheme Offering Rs 15,000 Annual Aid per School Child

The TDP-led NDA government in Andhra Pradesh has launched 'Talliki Vandanam' scheme where Rs 15,000 will be given annually to every school-going child in a household, a top official said on Friday. 'Talliki Vandanam' is one of the 'Super Six' set of welfare promises made by Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu in the run-up to the 2024 polls. "The government has issued guidelines for the implementation of the 'Talliki Vandanam' scheme, a key initiative designed to empower mothers/guardians across the state, by extending financial assistance of Rs 15,000 per annum per child to every eligible mother/guardian," said Kona Sasidhar, secretary to government in an order. Irrespective of the number of children in a household who attend school from Class I to intermediate, the scheme will be extended to all eligible households. Likewise, the government will also take into account the expected eligible enrollments into Class I and junior intermediate for this scheme, it said. Over 67 lakh students and 43 lakh mothers will benefit from the 'Talliki Vandanam' scheme. Out of Rs 15,000 per annum, Rs 2,000 will be deducted at source for the overall development of educational ecosystem in the state, involving maintenance, hygiene and sanitation. According to the secretary, this scheme focuses on making school education more accessible and inclusive with a commitment to provide equal opportunities and improve learning outcomes. "The scheme empowers mothers to be actively involved in their children's schooling from Class I to Class XII, while recognising their pivotal role in shaping educational progress," he said. The benefits of this scheme will be extended to all the eligible children, Sasidhar said, adding that government, private aided and private unaided schools and junior colleges will be covered. The southern state has set a timeframe between June 12 and July 5 to complete the entire disbursal and implementation of the scheme. Dubbed as the "mother of all welfare schemes" by the government, 'Tallki Vandanam' is also aimed at encouraging families to have more children as part of Naidu's focus on addressing a plummeting population and 'demographic management'.
