Margao:
Konkani writer Nayana Adarkar was awarded the Sahitya Akademi Bal Sahitya Puraskar 2025 for her collection of stories 'Belabaicho Shankar Aani Haer Kanyo'. Glynis Dias received the Yuva Puraskar for her work 'Gaavgaathaa', a collection of short stories that captures the essence of rural Goan life.
Adarkar's body of work spans multiple genres, including poetry collections such as 'Pratima', 'Mansanvar', and 'Kisran', alongside her story collections 'Spandan' and 'Krishnachud'. Her literary essays 'Povanam', 'Chanfo', 'Kantekunvar', and 'Batmogrim' resonated deeply with readers and critics alike.
Her dedication to nurturing young minds through children's literature is particularly noteworthy, with numerous storybooks that enriched Konkani literature for younger audiences.
Her writings were incorporated into the curriculum of the Goa Board for Secondary and Higher Secondary Education, as well as the BA course at Goa University.
Earlier, Adarkar received Goa govt's Yashodamini Puraskar and the Kerala Prachar Sabha's Saraswatibai Sahitya Puraskar. The Konkani Akademi and Konkani Bhasha Mandal both awarded her their respective Sahitya awards. She is also the recipient of the prestigious Dr T M Pai Foundation Prashasti Puraskar.
Dias is an assistant professor of Konkani at the Govt College of Arts, Science and Commerce, Quepem. Her award-winning collection 'Gaavgaathaa' draws extensively from her intimate knowledge and observations of rural life. The title story of her collection holds particular poignancy, chronicling the tale of Kurdi village, which disappeared beneath the waters following the construction of the Selaulim dam more than three decades ago.
Dias, whose parents originated from Kurdi, crafted a touching narrative around this submerged village that briefly resurfaces during the summer months when water levels recede. The award presentation ceremony will be announced later.

Novels narrate history and enable analysis: Yekkar

Mangaluru: A novel is not history, but it performs the function of narrating history, said Dr Gananath Yekkar, president of the Dr Shivaram Karanth Trust. "History demands records, while a novel allows for both history and analysis," he added. He was speaking at the event 'Aanjel-75', marking the 75th anniversary of the publication of the first Konkani novel in Kannada script, 'Aanjel' by Joachim Santan Alvares, in 1950. It was organised by the Karnataka Konkani Sahitya Academy on Sunday. Yekkar mentioned that a deep understanding of literature of any language leads to love for it. "Novel Aanjel is a historical milestone. Such works and events inspire today's youth in literary creation and pave the way for the expansion of literature to future generations," he said. On the 75th anniversary of the publication of the novel, he emphasised the need for training in literary creation for students and youth, which would foster the growth of Konkani literature. "The academy should also encourage this by providing training, which would inspire the youth and nurture a love for literature," he said. On the occasion, the ebook of the novel Aanjel was released by Fr Rocky D'Cunha, president of the Konkani Natak Sabha. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo He remarked that author JS Alvares was a talented individual whose contribution to enriching Konkani literature is well-known and serves as an inspiration to the youth. ‘No Karnataka and Maharashtra people harmed': Gujaratis' warm embrace of Hindi wins hearts online amid language debates

In the midst of rising tensions around language identity in states like Karnataka and Maharashtra, a refreshing video from Gujarat is offering a different perspective, and it is winning hearts on social media. The clip, shared a day ago by content creator Jai Punjabi, features a series of candid street interviews shot in Gujarat. Punjabi begins each conversation admitting, 'Main Gujarat mein reh raha hun, par mujhe Gujarati nahi aati' (I live in Gujarat, but I don't know Gujarati). Instead of disapproval or awkwardness, he's met with warmth and humour. One man responds saying, 'Toh reh rahe ho na? Idhar koi dikkat hai? Shanti se raho aur rehne do' (You're living here, right? There aren't any issues? Live in peace and let others live in peace). This response struck a chord online. Another local, switching to Hindi for Punjabi's sake, says it's only natural to make outsiders feel at home. 'Tumhe nahi aati hai toh main Hindi bol raha hun, varna mereko bhi Gujarati aati hai' (Since you don't know Gujarati, I am speaking in Hindi. I know Gujarati), he explains. A third person reassures Punjabi that language is never a barrier in Gujarat. 'Koi problem nahi. Kya problem hai? Hum log Hindi mein bolenge na' (There's no problem. Is there one? We can talk in Hindi). It's the last interviewee who impressed netizens the most: 'Dekho, desh toh ek hi hai. India hai. Language alag alag hai. Par bolo prem se toh baat ek hi hai' (See, the country is one. It is India. Languages are many. But if we speak with love, everything is the same), he says. A post shared by Jai Punjabi (@jaipunjabii) The video has already garnered over 16 million views in just 24 hours, and the comments section is buzzing. 'No Karnataka and Maharashtra people harmed in this video,' one user said. Another wrote, 'Same with Goa. We try our best to speak Hindi, even if it's broken, but we never shame anyone for not knowing Konkani.' Of course, not everyone agreed. One user pointed out, 'Still, you should speak the language of the state you live in.'
