Ex-cricketer questions BCCI over India-Pakistan fixtures in Asia Cup: 'Especially after the terrorist attack…'

Former India cricketer Manoj Tiwary slammed the BCCI for giving its nod of approval to Men in Blue being placed in the same group as arch-rivals Pakistan at this year's Asia Cup. The continental event, after all, will be taking place in the UAE in September, months after a terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam that preceded a military conflict between the two nuclear-armed nations.
The terror attack as well as the subsequent conflict had led to speculations that the Asia Cup, which was scheduled to be hosted by India in the T20 format this year, would ultimately be called off. The event, however, sprung back to life after the Asian Cricket Council meeting in Dhaka last week, which was attended virtually by BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla.

And with India and Pakistan being placed in Group A along with Oman and UAE, there is a during the course of the event.
'India-Pakistan match should not happen in such an environment'
'I am against it. The India-Pakistan match should not be held. Especially after the terrorist attack in Pahalgam in which civilians have been killed. After that, Operation Sindoor has taken place,' Tiwary, who is a Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sport, told news agency ANI.
'The situation was so bad, how can we think of an India-Pakistan match. I feel that it should be considered again and the India-Pakistan match should not happen in such an environment. Our Prime Minister is saying that the Operation Sindoor is still going on… How can we play a match with Pakistan?' the former Bengal captain added.

India and Pakistan have also been put in the same group by the International Cricket Council in next year's Women's T20 World Cup in England.
The two nations were also scheduled to face each other twice in the ongoing World Championship of Legends, a tournament that features retired cricketers in England.
However, the Yuvraj Singh-led India Champions boycotted both of their fixtures against Pakistan Champions, including the semi-finals that was scheduled to take place on Thursday. The Pakistanis, thus, progressed to the final for the second consecutive time, at the cost of the defending champions.

India rejects UK report alleging ‘transnational repression'
India Friday categorically rejected as 'baseless' a British parliamentary report that named it among countries engaged in 'transnational repression' in the UK. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said the allegations stemmed from 'unverified' and 'dubious sources' predominantly linked to proscribed entities and individuals. 'We have seen the references to India in the report and categorically reject these baseless allegations,' said MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal. 'These claims stem from unverified and dubious sources, predominantly linked to proscribed entities and individuals with a clear, documented history of anti-India hostility,' he said. Jaiswal said the 'deliberate reliance on discredited sources calls into question the credibility of the report itself'. The report made by the British Parliament's Joint Committee on Human Rights listed India along with China, Egypt, Eritrea, Iran, Pakistan, Russia, Bahrain, Rwanda, Saudi Arabia, Turkey and the United Arab Emirates as countries allegedly engaging in 'transnational repression' in the UK. The report titled 'Transnational repression in the UK' was made public on July 30. Some of the details related to India cited in the report were provided by Sikhs for Justice, a pro-Khalistan organisation banned in India under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, and other UK-based Sikh groups.

Bihar Assembly Elections: Seemanchal, close to Bangladesh, sees significant voter deletion
Synopsis Bihar's Seemanchal region, comprising Araria, Kishanganj, Purnia, and Katihar, has experienced significant voter deletions in the draft electoral roll, totaling several lakhs. These districts, bordering Bangladesh and Nepal with a high Muslim population, are known for infiltration. The region's 24 assembly seats are crucial for the NDA and INDIA bloc, marked by communal polarization and close contests. Agencies Bihar's Seemanchal region which accommodates four districts - Araria, Kishanganj, Purnia and Katihar - has witnessed a significant voter deletion in the draft electoral roll. Since the region is close to Bangladesh and shares boundaries with Nepal, these four districts, which have a high Muslim population, are known for infiltration. Araria saw a deletion of 1,58,072 voters, Kishanganj 1,45,668, Purnia 2,73,920 and Katihar 1,84,254 in the draft list. Now after the deletion, the number of voters in Araria stands at 19,24,414; Kishanganj 10,86,242; Purnia 19,94,511 and Katihar 20,44,809. The Seemanchal region, which has 24 assembly seats, is considered a tough battlefield for both main political players - ruling NDA and main Opposition INDIA bloc (previously known as Mahagathbandhan) because of polarisation of voters on communal lines during the elections. In most of the 24 constituencies, the candidates faced close contests in the previous elections. In 2020 assembly polls, AIMIM had made its presence felt in this region by bagging five seats. The presence of AIMIM candidates in different seats of this region was a major source of trouble for the Mahagtahbandhan then. Although a clear political picture of the Seemanchal region will emerge after the final publication of electors' list, both the NDA and INDIA bloc are set to swing into action to ensure proper verification of the draft list of electors in this region.
