'Four Letters Of Love' Review - Just Another Beautiful, Boring Love Story

It is a familiar tale of star-crossed lovers. Four Letters of Love attempts to add its two cents on the story trope. In a yawning yarn, the film boasts an impressive cast and beautiful Irish locales, but overindulges in emotional sap. It plays like a dime-store Nicholas Sparks romance, leaving us disinterested. Four Letters of Love reads like a long-winded letter, forever to the point and ultimately unsatisfactory. Even the hopeless romantic crowd may find this to be a dreary trip to boredom.
The film starts with an older Nicholas (Fionn O'Shea) reflecting on his life and love. In a story that unfolds haphazardly through different eras, the timeline feels muddled. The story proper is about Nicholas and Isabel (Ann Skelly). Ideally suited, yet they find themselves at a crossroads. Between family feuds, differing passions, and matters of faith, Nicholas and Isabel's love grows further apart. Fionn O'Shea in 'Four Letters of Love'. Photo Credit: Quiver Distribution
Family disruptions and tragedy befall both, with Nicholas's father, William (Pierce Brosnan), quitting his job as a mindless bureaucrat to become a painter. For Isabel, her life ruptures when an accident befalls her brother. This prompts her mother (Helena Bonham Carter) and father (Gabriel Byrne) to send her off the island they call home for a convent on the mainland. As Nicholas and Isabel find their lives in tatters and scattering in a thousand different directions, it seems their love is over. However, fate intervenes as we would expect. Miracles do happen, and these two star-crossed lovers are together again.
Four Letters of Love aims to be something magical by blending a seed of realism with a story of faith and virtue. While these are compelling attributes, the film itself seesaws on this objective rather than giving us something worthwhile or even elements to chew on. The film is told across the decades, working in a nonlinear narrative that leaves the viewer feeling disoriented and unfulfilled. The film aims to play on the idea of love conquering all, and yes, in these stories, one expects this bit of fanfare. It's just the execution and ultimate ending that remind us of other films and novels that both deliver and elevate the concept. Pierce Brosnan in 'Four Letters of Love'. A bloated narrative structure leaves us in the Irish moors. However, the talents of the cast provide a glimmer of hope in an otherwise foggy brew. Brosnan, while far from the film's central characters, anchors this picture with a commanding screen presence and natural charm. The former 007 is right at home and provides us with much of the story's central action. His character's life as a workaday civil servant comes to an abrupt end when he interprets a message from God. This divine intervention prompts him to become a painter. His decision to abandon his wife and son and stake a claim off the coast of Ireland is arguably the film's strongest crux.
The story of Nicholas and Isabel is the primary focus. Still, the musings of Brosnan or those of Helena Bonham Carter, who, as Isabel's mother, Margaret, is a firecracker of a personality, draw us like moths to the flame. It is never a good sign when the story's supporting characters are more interesting and developed than those of the main characters. Therein lies the challenge and folly of casting such dynamic personalities in a film that is otherwise flat-footed. Ann Skelly and Fionn O'Shea in 'Four Letters of Love'. Another notable aspect of the film is the sweeping portrait it creates of Ireland. A multitude of emotions arise from the breathtaking cinematography. Many frames are like a painting come to life; in fact, the film's ending holds a stunning landscape by William, capturing the story's final beats. Unfortunately, the tried-and-true elements fail to come together into something magical; however, the film's look and scope are truly magical.
Ultimately, genre fans may find film to be equivalent to watching paint dry. The talents of the cast, particularly the veterans, are wasted on a worn-out love story we've seen plenty of times. Beautiful to look at, but falls short. It is like a picture book that, through majestic imagery, rushes to find some deeper meaning.
Four Letters of Love will debut in select theaters on July 25, 2025, courtesy of Quiver Distribution.

This San Ramon Mall Might Be a New Destination for Indian Cuisine in the East Bay

An East Bay mall is about to be a hot spot for phenomenal, laid-back Indian food. The teams behind tremendously popular mini empire Curry Up Now and Michelin Guide-approved Tiya will open a new restaurant together at City Center Bishop Ranch. Khaki will debut for dinner on Thursday, July 31, at 6000 Bollinger Canyon Road in San Ramon, a former Curry Up Now location. This new restaurant will be much more upscale than the typical Indian burrito outlet, though, says Akash Kapoor, founder of Curry Up Now and co-owner at Khaki. Chefs and brothers Sujan and Pujan Sarkar — the former of whom took Chicago's Indienne to one-Michelin-star status — worked with Kapoor to get a comfort food menu with fine dining approaches ready, while Tiya's Eater Award-winning bartender Izler Thomas came in for drinks. Broadly, the menu and approach reflect all three's memories of eating and living in India. 'The menu isn't just food,' Kapoor says, 'it's a lived experience that I've been through and they've been through.' The Bishop Ranch restaurant — referred to as an Indian bar and canteen by the team — will cover all of the regions of India in various ways. As the country is enormous, that survey will take time, convenient as the restaurant's menu will rotate seasonally. A jackfruit cutlet on the debut menu is a play on the common Calcutta street food, Kapoor says, the home region to both Sujan and Pujan. A dry-aged beef dish nods to coastal Karnataka while a Champaran mutton, cooked in an Indian clay pot, showcases the Bihari region of Kapoor's childhood. Bengali fish paturi stars, too, a lighter affair steamed in banana leaf with heavy mustard flavors. Chaat and all kinds of street snacks will dot the scene, too. Across the board, the idea is to plant a big flag for Indian cuisine; the name is a reclamation of the term given to British colonists and their infamous footmen, but khaki itself — a derivative of the Urdu word for soil — is a color brought to the world from India. Neetu Laddha Neetu Laddha Therefore the menu and ambiance pay homage to the era in which India separated itself from colonial rule, the '60s and '70s. Bright, zany colors and tastes that took charge during that time are center stage. Drinks follow suit, showcased with pride at a 14-seater bar. There'll be a Negroni incorporating truffle and goat cheese, which arrives with a cracker, perhaps topping Thomas's Parmesan and sourdough-infused drink at Tiya. Bengal's panch phoron spice, made for pickling, will star in a grapefruit tequila cocktail, riffing on a paloma. Another drink relies on clarified vanilla ice cream, basil, yuzu, and elderflower. Thomas's brother, Roger Thomas, is joining the team here, while Kapoor pitched in thanks to his experience at Curry Up Now's Mortar & Pestle cocktail curation. Kapoor says this former Curry Up Now outpost did decent, but not the numbers he wanted to hit. COVID cratered Bishop Ranch, the workers in the area drying up. He and Sujan were already pals, and he broached the idea of collaborating in 2024. Indian design firm Curry Fwd, the same team behind Tiya's build out, handled the aesthetic which includes three different kinds of hand-drawn wallpapers. They hope the restaurant will be a familiar member of the community, not a place just for anniversaries. Kapoor says while he loves many of the upscale Indian restaurants in town, his favorite San Francisco restaurant is Ernest. He feels it is a restaurant well worth the price, pointing to the reliable $95 tasting menu; Besharam and Heena Patel's cooking shine as well-made and affordable, too. 'We are not in the education business. We're not trying to educate people on how to eat Indian food,' Kapoor says. 'But it's very important to look back and say, 'Okay, this is what we set out to do.' The food's not just for people who make $200,000. The food's got to be honest, man.' Khaki (6000 Bollinger Canyon Road) will open from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday and until 10 p.m. Saturday and Sunday with lunch hours to follow. What we know as Cat Deeley and Patrick Kielty split after 12 years of marriage

The exes have two children and were married for more than 10 years This Morning presenter Cat Deeley and her husband Patrick Kielty have broken up after more than a decade of marriage and two children together. They said in a joint statement to PA news agency: "We have taken the decision to end our marriage and are now separated. There is no other party involved. "We will continue to be united as loving parents to our children and would therefore kindly ask for our family privacy to be respected. There will be no further comment." Deeley and Kielty were just months away from their 13th wedding anniversary, having got married in September 2012 at a ceremony in Rome. The exes said they would put on a united front to co-parent their two sons, Milo, nine, and James, seven. Cat Deeley missed her husband's mum's funeral Earlier this year, This Morning presenter Deely didn't attend Kielty's mother's funeral in March in Dundrum, Ireland. It was reported that she was staying home to support their two children. An ITV spokesperson told The Daily Mail at the time: "Cat remained at home to be there for her two young children before and after school on this very sad day." Move to the UK Recently, Deeley has become the face of British TV walking in the footsteps of Holly Willoughby after replacing her on ITV's show This Morning. She has been presenting the daytime chat show alongside Ben Shephard. In 2024, Deeley shared her struggles of juggling being a mum while being a presenter on This Morning. "I drop the ball all the time. I'm exactly the same as everybody else," she told HELLO! magazine. "I do the juggle – the juggle is real, the struggle is real... You know, we know, we're all just trying to make everything work. It's all a juggle; it's juggling the things that make you feel good." The couple had made the big decision to move their family to the UK in 2020. They totally changed their lives, leaving behind their $5m family home in Beverly Hills. Instead, they settled into a £4.9m five-bedroom home in Hampsted, London. Meanwhile, her husband and northern Irish presenter Kielty is the host of the RTE talk show The Late Late Show. Before the move back to London, Deeley and Kielty had lived in Los Angeles for more than 10 years. It was there that she hosted the US series So You Think you Can Dance. The family made the decision to relocate after one terrifying incident in 2019 where Kielty and their son, Milo, got caught up in a gun incident in a shopping centre. Deeley said in 2020: "Everyone was told to lie behind the counter or pushed into the loos. People were screaming and crying. Then, as they were all hiding, the FBI turned up with guns. Paddy kept Milo calm — he didn't really know what was going on." She added: "As I was driving, I began to see helicopters, news vans, firemen and armed police response squads. It makes me go funny now. It was terrifying. Paddy was shaken by it, more than Milo, who didn't properly understand. The gun laws in America are crazy." Meeting on reality TV and falling in love Love blossomed later for Deeley and Kielty. They first met on the set of reality TV show Fame Academy in 2002. But the couple were both in relationships with other people. There was a spark and they stayed in touch as friends, reaching out on each other's birthdays. It wasn't until 10 years later that the romantic spark was ignited. Kielty went to great lengths to fly to Los Angeles from Belfast to have a birthday brunch with Deeley at short notice. He previously told The Daily Mail: "Well there had always been a spark between us, but either she was with someone or I was, and then she moved to LA, so opportunities for something to develop were limited. Unless someone was stupid enough to get on a plane, nothing would have happened." Deeley was clearly impressed with the move. Kielty remembered: "I was at the Beverly Hills Hotel by 2.15pm. When I walked in, Cat looked at me and said: "Oh, you're good!"" After nine months, the couple walked down the aisle in Italy. Deeley had a relaxed approach to their wedding. She previously told Closer magazine: "Patrick went and tried the food and did all that, I never even saw the place where I got married before I got married, that's how uninvolved I was."
