Despite their rollicking start to the Currie Cup season, with two bonus-point wins, 112 points scored and only 23 conceded, the Bulls are wary of getting too far ahead of themselves at this early stage of the campaign.
Last year's Currie Cup performance remains a stark reminder of the pitfalls of failing to maintain high standards throughout the tournament, after a similarly bright start ultimately yielded no silverware.
It is a lesson not lost on Bulls assistant coach Kennedy Tsimba.

'This is just the first couple of steps in a campaign that has been looking promising, but we do know that each week brings its different challenges,' Tsimba said, at a media conference on Monday afternoon.
'It's about not getting ahead of yourself and understanding that there are teams that are going to give us different questions that we need to deal with.
'But I think the lesson we did learn from last year is that yes, you can play well, but it's about being able to perform at the right time — when you need to peak. As a team, we've got to navigate how we peak and be able to deal with the competition as it gets to the business end.'
Tsimba expects the nuggety Pumas to ask the Bulls some uncomfortable questions in Sunday's home fixture. The side from Mpumalanga opened with a win over Griquas but fell to the Cheetahs this past weekend.
'They are an interesting team that will definitely bring a different challenge. There is a whole range of skills that are going to be on show,' he said.
'Whatever questions they ask of us, we've got to be able to execute the answers. And I think we're confident enough to handle that.

Liverpool beat Athletic Club in five-goal thriller in pre-season friendly

Liverpool's Dutch striker #18 Cody Gakpo celebrates scoring the team's third goal during the second of two pre season friendly football matches between Liverpool and Athletic Bilbao at Anfield in Liverpool, north west England on August 4, 2025. Picture: Darren Staples/AFP Image: Darren Staples/AFP Liverpool recorded a 3-2 victory over Athletic Club in their second Anfield encounter of the day with the La Liga side on Monday. Mohamed Salah steered the Reds into an early lead, finishing with trademark aplomb from Hugo Ekitike's cutback across the area. Oihan Sancet levelled for the opposing side on 29 minutes following a set-piece, but Cody Gakpo restored the home side's advantage when he converted from close range shortly after half-time. Athletic Club then equalised for a second time, Maroan Sannadi finding the net via a deflection with a header at a corner. Video Player is loading. Next Stay Close ✕ Gakpo's Decisive Goal and Liverpool's Anfield Debuts: Key Moments from the Match The touch had come off Gakpo inside the area; however, the Netherlands forward would once again put Liverpool in front by drilling a low shot across goal and under Unai Simon in what would prove the game's deciding moment. Five of Liverpool's summer arrivals were handed Anfield debuts for the club, with Ekitike, Jeremie Frimpong, Milos Kerkez, Giorgi Mamardashvili and Florian Wirtz named in the XI. Virgil van Dijk missed out due to illness, so Salah took the captain's armband. Conor Bradley was also absent due to a minor injury. Having netted four times in the day's earlier fixture between the sides, the Reds almost made the perfect start in this one, too. A counter-attack resulted in Ekitike sending Gakpo racing down the left. His cross into the centre took Simon out of the game and found the head of Wirtz, who looped an effort onto the roof of the net with five minutes played. Then, shortly after, a free-kick routine on the edge of the area saw Salah roll the ball off to Dominik Szoboszlai, whose powerful drive was parried by the visitors' goalkeeper. Anfield Drama: Salah's Assist and Athletic Club's Equaliser An even better opening would be fashioned as the Anfield scoreboard showed 13 minutes, with Salah playing a remarkable pass across the box for Gakpo. A scoop towards the far post skidded just wide. Nevertheless, Liverpool's early pressure duly told. Szoboszlai prodded a pass into space for Ekitike to run into. He skipped beyond Daniel Vivian with a double step-over and cut it back across the area, where Salah collected – albeit with a slight touch of fortune - and steered into the net. One could have been two inside 60 seconds, but Wirtz's hook at goal from a Salah centre was parried by Simon. However, for all of the Reds' dominance, Athletic Club levelled just before the half-hour mark when Inigo Ruiz de Galarreta's free-kick towards the back post from deep was nudged back into the area by Vivian, allowing Sancet to take a touch and swipe in from 10 yards. Ryan Gravenberch's powerful blast from range threatened to put the hosts back in front almost immediately, but Simon pushed over the crossbar.

How Sekhukhune United and Generation Schools plan to reshape youth football development

Image: Supplied Football academies are a dime a dozen around the country, most of them selling parents and kids dreams of developing aspiring players to play in some of the world's great football leagues. But many people running these academies turn out to be snake-oil salespeople. That was certainly the case last month when BT Academy in Cape Town was thrust into the news for all the wrong reasons. Next Stay Close ✕ BT Academy came under fire after a group comprising Under-14, Under-19 and girls' soccer teams were left stranded in Spain when return flights were not booked, despite each player paying R50 000 for what was supposed to be an all-expenses-paid trip to the Donosti Cup. The bulk of those kids made it home safely thanks to the help of the community and broadcast personality Tracy Lange, who stepped in after the owner of the BT Academy, Brandon Timmy, left them to fend for themselves. It's tough to regulate these academies, as many aren't affiliated with mother bodies, such as the Safa or Fifa. Safa Cape Town boss Bennett Bailey confirmed that BT Academy wasn't 'authorised to participate in Fifa-sanctioned tournaments.' Yet, parents forked out R50,000 to get their kids to Spain to play in a tournament, hoping that it might be a springboard to greater things. In the end, it turned out to be a nightmare — which, luckily, had a happy ending. Last week, however, Betway Premiership club Sekhukhune United and Generation Schools announced the type of partnership that, at first glance, seems like a much better academy model for young kids aspiring to be professional footballers. Sekhukhune and Generation Schools launched a ground-breaking, fully integrated youth football academy in Gauteng, which, according to a statement, will combine elite-level football training with private school education for up to 144 talented young athletes. All of the kids will enjoy fully funded scholarships. It's a model similar to what we see in rugby, but typically without the involvement of a professional team. Former Model C schools across the country hand out scholarships to many young rugby players, especially those from previously disadvantaged and poorer communities. These players enjoy the best rugby development money can offer, while also gaining a good education. The cream of the crop then enter SA Rugby's Early Player Development (EPD) pipeline, which more often than not leads straight into the Springboks. Sekhukhune United, launched five years ago, has become a sustainable football brand in a country where even legacy clubs have folded under financial strain. Over the past two seasons, they have finished fourth in the league, and this past weekend they qualified for the semi-finals of the MTN8. But Sekhukhune United know they don't have the financial muscle to compete with giants such as Mamelodi Sundowns, Orlando Pirates, and Kaizer Chiefs for the best players in the country. They want to develop their own stars, while also giving those who don't make it a proper education to fall back on. 'We're building a footballing legacy that starts with meaningful investment in our youth. But our ambition isn't just about producing the next generation of professional players — it's about nurturing responsible, empowered young leaders,' Sekhukhune United's marketing and communications head, Tebogo Mapinga, told the media. 'Too often, our brightest talents are lured abroad. "This academy is designed to give them world-class opportunities right here at home. This collaboration will change the lives of the youth from the Sekhukhune region, along with the rest of South Africa.'

Tinkler's new look Sekhukhune United pass first test

Bradley Grobler celebrates scoring on debut for Sekhukhune United, helping fire Babina Noko into the MTN8 semi-finals. Photo: Backpagepix Image: Backpagepix Sekhukhune United's off-season rebuild began paying immediate dividends as their refreshed squad delivered a thrilling 3-2 comeback win over TS Galaxy to book a place in the MTN8 semi-finals. Babina Noko twice had to come from behind in the five-goal contest, with 37-year-old striker Bradley Grobler announcing his arrival in emphatic style by scoring twice on debut. The result means Eric Tinkler's side will now meet Stellenbosch FC in the semi-finals — a rematch of the final-day league clash that saw Stellies pip them to third place last season. Tinkler, who oversaw one of the most active transfer windows in the league, handed debuts to several signings, including two promising youngsters in Olerato Mandi and Medupi Thokolo. "Olerato, who played as a No 10, has only been with the group for about four weeks, but I felt it was better to start him and take him off if needed. And Medupi, who came from Casric Stars, gave a really solid showing in central defence—even if we are asking him to adapt to a new, possession-based style.' But the headline act was undoubtedly Grobler, the former SuperSport United talisman, who twice pulled Sekhukhune level with clinical finishes—his experience proving vital in a game of fine margins.
