Stafford deputies: Driver charged with DUI after car goes airborne, crashes

STAFFORD COUNTY, Va. () — Stafford County deputies said a car went airborne and crashed because the driver was driving drunk. The Stafford County Sheriff's Office (SCSO) said on June 12, at around 4:15 p.m., deputies responded to Richmond Highway near Bells Hill Road for a car accident. Man arrested for drunk driving, Stafford deputies say The caller told deputies that the driver 'violently' left the road before their car flew in the air. They reported that the driver had fled the scene. When deputies arrived at the scene, they saw that the car had struck a sewer cover at high speed, which is what caused it to fly. The driver was nowhere to be found, so deputies went to the registered owner's home, which was a few streets away. Soon after, a person emerged from the woods and matched the description of the driver. When deputies confronted him, he immediately put his hands up and admitted to the crash. The driver was showing signs of intoxication and a crushed can of Heineken was found in the car, authorities said. He was held at the Rappahannock Regional Jail on a $2,500 secured bond. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
