Baseball fans are asking if the Braves and Red Sox have dug too deep a hole this season. After Memorial Day, both clubs sit well below expectations. The Braves are sliding in the NL East, and the Red Sox are faltering in the AL East.
With key injuries and weak pitching, both teams face tough chances to reach October baseball.
Atlanta Braves fall into early-season slump
The Braves started 2025 with a 0–7 record—their worst since 2016 and one of only 30 teams to do so. As of June, their playoff odds have dropped from 93% to just 26%. They've lost another seven-game stretch recently and are struggling to score runs.
Despite dominant talent featuring stars like Ronald Acuña Jr. and Spencer Strider, key injuries have hurt their lineup and pitching depth.
Still, ESPN notes they have a 54–70% shot via simulations. Oddsmaker BetMGM lists them at –150 to make the playoffs and +125 to miss.

The Red Sox entered May with heavy expectations after adding Garrett Crochet and Alex Bregman. But May turned into a 'brutal month' marked by bad starts, injuries, and a bullpen that collapsed. They began the three-series set at Atlanta on May 30 with a 5–1 win but remained below .500 overall.

During batting practice, David Ortiz hit a strong line drive into the stands. The ball came directly toward young Merrill, but his father quickly reached out and caught it, saving his son. Merrill said, 'I remember it so vividly coming right in my face.' That moment made a lasting impact and turned him into a Red Sox fan. He added, 'So that kind of got me on his [Ortiz's] train.' "Coaching staff does a really good job": Marcelo Mayer credits backend support after his first career multi-homer game against Rays

Image Source: Getty On June 11, 2025, Boston Red Sox rookie Marcelo Mayer hit two home runs, helping his team beat the Tampa Bay Rays 4-3 at Fenway Park. The 22-year-old said the coaching staff's help was key to his big game. This win gave Boston two series victories in a row, lifting team spirit. Marcelo Mayer's breakout performance at Fenway Park Marcelo Mayer, Boston's No. 2 prospect, had a big day, hitting 2 solo homers in a 4-3 win over the Rays. His first in the 2nd went 418 feet to the right, his second in the 4th went 410 feet, both off Zack Littell. At 22 years and 181 days old, Mayer is the youngest Red Sox player to hit 2 homers in a game since Rafael Devers in 2018. — NESN (@NESN) He credited the coaches for the game plan and said he felt ready at the plate. Manager Alex Cora said Mayer's swings looked easy and smart. Since joining the team on May 24, 2025, Mayer's batting average is now .294, showing he's getting better every day. His homers helped Boston win a key series, keeping them in the playoff race. The coaches told the players to swing early, and it worked, as Littell gave up four homers for the first time since April. Pitcher Walker Buehler threw seven strong innings, allowing three runs, and Aroldis Chapman closed the game for his 12th save. Cora said the team followed the coaches' plan perfectly, even though they didn't get hits with runners on base. Mayer's success, along with Roman Anthony's recent debut, shows how well the coaches prepare young players for big moments. With a 34-36 record, Boston is playing better, winning five of their last seven games. The coaches' focus on helping players like Mayer adjust to the major leagues is paying off. As the Red Sox get ready to face the Yankees next, their teamwork and coaching are helping them stay strong in the tough AL East division.

Andrew Painter is off-limits in any potential Jarren Duran trade with Phillies- Report

Image Source: Getty The Philadelphia Phillies want to improve their outfield before the MLB trade deadline on July 31, 2025. They're looking at Boston Red Sox star Jarren Duran, who had a great 2024 season. But a trade idea that includes two top Phillies prospects seems way too expensive. Fans are talking about whether this move is worth it for a team trying to win the World Series. Phillies eye Jarren Duran but face steep price The Phillies are doing well in the National League and need a better outfield to help their batting. Jarren Duran from Boston is a fast and powerful player who could help, hitting .274 this year. A trade idea from Bleacher Report says the Phillies would give up their top pitcher prospect, Andrew Painter, and their fourth-best prospect, catcher Eduardo Tait. This trade gives Boston a big win, as they get two young stars for Duran, who's almost 29. Duran had an amazing 2024 with 48 doubles and 34 stolen bases, but he might not keep that up. The Phillies don't want to lose Painter, who could be a great pitcher, or Tait, a future star catcher. Fans think this trade could hurt the team's future for a risky short-term gain. Trading Duran could get Boston the young pitchers they need. But Duran is a fan favorite with a .814 OPS, so trading him would be hard. For the Phillies, Duran could fix their outfield problems, but giving up Painter and Tait is too much. The Phillies are trying to improve their batting without big trades, says As the deadline approaches, both teams will decide what's best, balancing the pursuit of immediate victory with long-term planning, while fans wait to see what happens.
