[1] APD says car thefts are pouring more guns onto Albuquerque streets – Albuquerque police are advising residents to remove their firearms from their vehicles. APD Deputy Chief Cecily Barker says over the last 12 months, 77 firearms were stolen across the city, with a majority of those taken from vehicles. APD says in 2024, 34 guns were stolen from vehicles in the month of May alone. Barker recommends firearm owners remove the guns from their cars as well as keeping logs of serial numbers, where it was purchased and when it was purchased.
[2] Current and former AFR personnel attend city council meeting over proposal – Albuquerque city council is passing a resolution that changes how all fire stations are staffed. Previously, each AFR rescue truck was required to have a minimum of two firefighters who have some training as EMT's or paramedics. This resolution changes it to two paramedic firefighters. Councilors voted to pass the resolution on a vote of 7-2.
[3] More dust & high fire threat with northern rain/snow – More-widespread dust is once again expected later this morning into the afternoon with potentially damaging winds and low visibility. Cooler weather will accompany the departing storm system for nearly all. Calm weather will mostly return tomorrow before the next cooler storm system arrives later this week with more moisture into the early weekend.
[4] City council votes to override Mayor Keller's Rail Trail funding veto – Albuquerque City Councilors voted to override Mayor Tim Keller's veto on the allocation of funds for the Rail Trail project. The project is already under construction near the Sawmill District. Two weeks ago, councilors voted to move half a million dollars from the project to fund the Ken Sanchez West Side Indoor Sports Complex. Mayor Keller vetoed the decision to pull funding for the Rail Trial. Monday night, councilors voted to override the veto with an 8 – 1 vote, saying both projects could use the funding.
[5] Navajo storyteller brings representation in front and behind the camera – A Navajo actress and filmmaker is sharing her culture from both on screen and behind the scenes. Natalie Benally pursued theatre in college, toured as a professional dancer and then got her first big role voicing 'Dory' for Pixar's Navajo Translation of 'Finding Nemo.' She has a recurring role on AMC's 'Dark Winds,' filmed in New Mexico.

Chief Harold Medina says detectives tracked a suspect to the Comfort Inn near the Sunport around 10 p.m. Wednesday. Police say the suspect tried leaving the hotel, but ran back inside when he saw them. APD says the suspect jumped out of a second story window and a police canine assisted in stopping him. [2] 4th teen arrested for role in hitting and killing man riding his bike to work – APD have arrested a fourth teen for his alleged role in the 2024 murder of Scott Habermehl, who was riding his bike to work. Investigators say Elijah Engelking, who was 15 at the time, was in the stolen car accused of intentionally crashing into Habermehl. APD previously arrested 13-year-old Johnathan Overbay, 15-year-old William Garcia, and 11-year-old Messiah Hayes in the case. APD says several people told detectives they recognized the sound of his voice when the video was posted on social media. Detectives determined Engelking also shared details about the crash and the investigation with friends through social media conversations. [3] Hotter temperatures around the state and stronger storms form in eastern NM – Isolated rain and thunderstorm chances continue in parts of New Mexico through this weekend. The highest chances for rain will be across the central mountain chain and in eastern New Mexico. Temperatures across New Mexico will also continue to heat up through Friday, when high temperatures will be well-above average statewide. The heat will stick around for most of the state through Sunday. [4] Governor declares state of emergency due to severe drought in New Mexico – Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham has declared a state of emergency due to severe drought in New Mexico. The order was issued last Thursday and assembles a task force to coordinate a response, including helping communities conserve water, and share resources to other local and tribal governments. The task force also has until July 31 to recommend short-term measures to reduce wildfire risk. [5] ABQ Parks and Rec conducting badger study – The Albuquerque Department of Parks and Recreation is enlisting the help of residents for a new study. Anyone who's captured a photo of a badger in the area is asked to send it in. They ask that all photos clearly show the animal's head stripe, which functions like its fingerprint. Police arrested 45-year-old Michael Clohessy after they say he was seen on surveillance video walking into the Walmart on Carlisle near Menaul, leaving his six-year-old son in the backseat. According to a criminal complaint, Clohessy told officers the boy did not want to go in the store, adding he thought he would be in the store for less than 15 minutes, but police say the boy was left alone for more than 20 minutes. Clohessy is now facing child abuse charges. [2] Bloomfield officer critically injured, suspect killed in traffic-stop shootout – A New Mexico police officer is in critical condition after a traffic stop turned into a deadly shooting that left the suspect dead. Bloomfield police say around 11 p.m. Monday, Officer Timothy Ontiveros pulled over a driver for a traffic stop. Police say the driver then shot Officer Ontiveros in the neck and shoulder. A second officer on scene then shot and killed the driver. The San Juan County Sheriff's Office is taking over the investigation. The driver's identity is not being released until they notify the next of kin. [3] Storms near the Rio Grande Valley and breezy weather – East winds will again bring in higher humidity into the Rio Grande Valley by Wednesday morning, but will get washed out to the east in the afternoon. Daily rain and thunderstorms chances will continue along and east of the central mountain chain through the end of the week. Strong to severe storms will be possible Wednesday afternoon in eastern New Mexico with large hail and damaging wind gusts. Temperatures will be heating up through the end of the week. The Metro will climb back into the 90s again by Friday. [4] Albuquerque church leaning on faith after 2 members killed by their son – Members of an Albuquerque church are continuing to mourn two of their longtime members after they were killed in a murder-suicide. For more than a decade, Stephen and Marcia Bockemeirer could be spotted nearly every Sunday at Albuquerque Revival Church in the International District. The Bockemeirer's were killed early Saturday by their youngest son, Andrew, who then took his own life. Police believe Andrew was suffering from a mental health illness. Lead pastor, Andres Lopez said when he became the pastor at Albuquerque Revival, the Bockemeiers were associate pastors helping him ease into a new role. [5] First-of-its-kind indoor pickleball facility coming to northeast Albuquerque – Pickleball players around Albuquerque will soon have a new place to play. Premier Pickleball's indoor facility will feature 12 courts, a skinny court and a drinking area. Chief Operations Officer Marty Garcia says the facility named 'The Picklr' will bring climate controlled courts to the city. He also said opportunities to play at the highest level, like the Professional Pickleball Association and major league pickleball, will be included. [2] NMDOT worker recalls being hit by distracted driver on I-25 – A New Mexico woman is facing charges after police say she slammed into two department of transportation workers on I-25. Two weeks ago, NMDOT worker Michael Sanchez says he and a crew were working on a strip of I-25 between Ribera and Bernal when he was hit by a car. The driver then sideswiped his partner. Despite going airborne, both men are okay. Police say the driver is facing charges for reckless driving. [3] Mountain storms and slightly hotter temperatures for most – Active weather will stick around this week with daily chances for showers and thunderstorms across parts of New Mexico. Moisture will continue to wash back and forth across eastern and central New Mexico this week. Westerly afternoon winds will push the moisture back into eastern parts of the state by the afternoon. [4] AFR responds to injured hiker at Elena Gallegos Open Space – Albuquerque Fire Rescue helped an injured hiker at the Pino Trail at the Elena Gallegos Open Space on Monday. The hiker sustained a leg injury and was unable to hike out. Crews hiked in, located the injured hiker, and transported them via a wheeled Stokes basket. [5] High school creates pre-veterinary program to encourage students to join industry – Hatch Valley Public Schools has created a pre-veterinary program for juniors and seniors. Their high school already had a veterinary science class, but as part of the new program, a working veterinarian will come teach students in a clinic setting.
