"Bengali migrant workers facing harassment in Odisha and Maharashtra": Congress' Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury writes to President Murmu's; seeks intervention

India Gazette11 hours ago
New Delhi [India], July 13 (ANI): Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury has written to the President of India, expressing grave concern over the ongoing harassment, illegal detention, and physical abuse of Bengali-speaking migrant workers in states like Odisha and Maharashtra.
In his letter, he highlighted that these workers are being wrongfully targeted due to their appearance and linguistic accent, under the false suspicion of being Bangladeshi nationals.
In the letter, Chowdhury stated, 'I wish to bring to your kind attention the very sad and cruel fact about the harassment, humiliation, threats as also illegal detention and physical torture a large number of Bengali migrant workers who are eking out their living as daily wage labourers engaged mostly in un-skilled and semi-skilled occupations in different parts of states like Odisha, Maharashtra are being subjected to. The fact that the physical appearance and accent of the language spoken by these migrant workers, who are bona fide Indian citizens, is similar to that of Bangladeshis is being used as a pretext to harass, humiliate, physically assault and hold these innocent people in detention.'
He further noted the significant economic contributions of these workers, saying, 'I would also like to reiterate that those lakhs of migrant workers who were compelled to venture into other states for their livelihoods also contribute significantly to the revenue kitty of the State Government through their remittances. Now those migrants are supposed to be rendered unemployed as they are the victims of witch-hunting of Bangladeshis resulting large-scale repatriation (returning back) to their respective destinations, much to the distress of them.'
Urging immediate intervention, Chowdhury pleaded, 'I therefore earnestly plead for your kind intervention by way of taking appropriate measures to see that innocent Bengali speaking people who are bona fide Indian nationals working as labourers in Odisha, Maharashtra and other states are not subjected to harassment, humiliation, torture and loss of livelihood.'
Meanwhile, TMC, through its official X handle, has released a video featuring TMC leader Kunal Ghosh, alleging a 'witch hunt' against Bengali-speaking people in BJP-ruled states.
The party claims that Bengali workers are being harassed, detained, and deported across borders, while legitimate Indian citizens are receiving NRC notices solely for speaking Bangla.
AITC accused BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari of labelling these individuals as 'Rohingyas' to communalise the issue and deflect from what they describe as a systematic targeting of Bengalis.
The party further stated that Adhikari and his associates are 'enemies of Bengal and Bengalis' and predicted their rejection in the 2026 elections. No official response has been received from the BJP or Suvendu Adhikari at the time of reporting. (ANI)

Shah's inaction against Pinarayi indicates a CPM-BJP deal: KPCC President

Thiruvananthapuram, July 14 (UNI) Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee President Sunny Joseph today alleged that Union Home Minister Amit Shah has taken no action against the Pinarayi Vijayan led state Government despite calling the regime corrupt, indicating a political deal between the BJP and CPI(M). Though Amit Shah, during his visit to Kerala, listed several instances of corruption in the state government, the central investigation agencies under his ministry probing these cases do not appear sincere in proving his claims, the Congress leader claimed. "Amit Shah must now explain the status of investigations by central agencies into cases such as the Dollar Smuggling, Gold Smuggling, Exalogic, and LIFE Mission scams. These probes have virtually come to a standstill. Who gave the order to halt these investigations ? Wasn't it Amit Shah himself ? Instead of taking real action, he is now deceiving the public with mere political rhetoric," the KPCC President alleged. Pinarayi Vijayan, "who never dares to offend the RSS or BJP, is being kept in power to serve their interests," Sunny Joseph added. He claimed this is driven by Amit Shah's and BJP's blind opposition to the Congress. "While central agencies aggressively pursue non-BJP leaders over baseless allegations, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan - accused in multiple corruption cases - is being given complete protection" he opined. If Amit Shah is sincere in what he says, he must take action, Sunny Joseph demanded. UNI DS AAB RKM

Cash-hit cong-ruled states not able to fill job vacancies: Prahlad

Hubballi: Congress-ruled states like Karnataka are unable to fill job vacancies due to the precarious financial condition they face, alleged Union Minister Pralhad Joshi on Sunday. Responding to a question related to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi reportedly targeting the BJP government at the Centre on the issue of unemployment, Joshi hit out at the former, accusing him of making statements based on what his advisers tell him, instead of himself going into details. 'Mr Rahul Gandhi doesn't always go into details. He will just give a reaction based on some feedback that his advisers give him. He doesn't go personally into details. Actually, post Covid, especially if I can say, employment rate has increased like anything, EPFO numbers itself show that,' Joshi said. Speaking to reporters here, he said as far as filling up vacancies in the central government are concerned, from 2022 to till date, every month there is Rozgar Mela, and every month 50,000 to one lakh people are being absorbed into the government. 'So far, in the last two-and-half years, more than seven-and-half lakh people have been recruited into various government departments and institutions,' he added. Noting that the ruling Congress in Karnataka had not filled more than 2 lakh vacancies in the state, the union minister said these vacancies have not been filled as the government is unable to pay the serving employees itself on time. 'They (Karnataka government) are not able to pay the serving employees on time. The payment of salary is delayed by ten to fifteen days to twenty days. Their (government) financial condition is precarious, so they are not filling up the vacancies,' he claimed. 'Before talking about something else, I will ask Mr Rahul Gandhi to look at what is happening in Karnataka, Telangana and Himachal Pradesh. They have governments in three states and they are in very bad shape,' he added.

As long as they keep competing like this, their alliance will not even get their deposit returned in any constituency in Tamil Nadu.' He rejected EPS's remark that the DMK was 'knocking at people's doors' ahead of elections.'We are knocking at the doors of the people within our rights. We are not knocking at Amit Shah's residence or Kamalalayam (BJP's state headquarters in Chennai) doors sneakily,' he also criticised EPS for questioning the use of Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) funds to build colleges. 'Why is EPS getting angry over colleges being constructed using temple funds for poor children to study?' he asked, linking the statement to EPS's alliance with the also referred to EPS's attire and said: 'He started his campaign in white shirt and dhoti but is now completely covered in saffron.'Claiming that Tamil Nadu voters would reject the AIADMK-BJP alliance, he said, 'The people of Tamil Nadu standing as 'One Tamil Nadu' and defeating fascists and slaves is assured.'- Ends
