Northern Ireland actor Liam Neeson has paid tribute to novelist Barbara Taylor Bradford in a message praising her brilliance and elegance read out at her memorial service.
The 73-year-old reflected on his role in TV drama A Woman Of Substance, adapted from one of the author's most well-known books, in the note that was read out on his behalf.
Taylor Bradford died at the age of 91 on November 24 last year following a short illness, "and was surrounded by loved ones to the very end", a spokeswoman said at the time.
Actors, authors and other notable figures attended the service at St Bride's Church in Fleet Street, London, on Thursday.
Neeson said in his message: "In 1984, I had the great honour of playing Blackie O'Neill in the television adaptation of Barbara Taylor Bradford's A Woman Of Substance, and again in its sequel, Hold The Dream.
"It was a landmark moment - the first television drama series to reach more than 13.8 million viewers on Britain's Channel 4 - and something we were all incredibly proud of.

"But more than the numbers, it was Barbara's vision, her storytelling, and her fierce dedication to her characters that made the work so special.
"She was a force - elegant, brilliant and unstoppable - and I feel deeply privileged to have been part of bringing her words to life."
Human rights lawyer Cherie Blair, wife of former prime minister Sir Tony Blair, was also in attendance and reflected on her friendship with the author in a speech.
"I can hardly believe it's been over 20 years since I first met Barbara in New York," she said.
"Tony and I were attending an event while he was UK Prime Minister.
"Although I can't recall the specifics of the event, I vividly remember meeting Barbara and, of course, her beloved husband, Bob (Robert Bradford).
"Meeting her was such a thrill - not only because I had read her books but also because she was a favourite author of both my mum and grandma.
"Barbara and I instantly connected as Northern girls who had ventured far from our roots, yet never forgot where we came from.
"At the time of our first meeting, Tony had not read any of Barbara's books, but he was so struck by her intelligence, elegance, and charm that he subsequently watched the TV show and read the book.
"Barbara and I stayed in touch, regularly meeting when I was in New York or when she was in London.
"One memory I treasure is attending the Women of Substance Awards with her at the Dorchester in London in 2009.
"The awards were so typical of Barbara - her unwavering support for other women was truly inspiring. She even offered me invaluable advice when I was establishing my own foundation for women.
"Barbara seemed ageless. Whenever we met, she was always engaged, well-informed, feisty and, of course, impeccably dressed.
"She was the epitome of a woman of substance - wise, fun and endlessly inspiring. We will deeply miss her warmth, wisdom and friendship."
The service began with the theme music from A Woman Of Substance and included an address from actress Jenny Seagrove, who played a young Emma Harte in the TV mini-series.
In April it was announced that Vera actress Brenda Blethyn will lead a new Channel 4 adaptation of A Woman Of Substance, playing protagonist Emma.
The book is a rags-to-riches tale set in the 1900s that follows the life of Yorkshire servant Emma who later heads up a business empire.
Taylor Bradford was often labelled "the grand dame of blockbusters", with her books selling more than 91 million copies and having been published in more than 40 languages and in 90 countries.

Other TV adaptations of her books included ITV's Act Of Will starring Elizabeth Hurley and Victoria Tennant, and To Be The Best, a sequel to A Woman Of Substance with Lindsay Wagner and Sir Anthony Hopkins.

Controversial Channel 4 show has been renewed despite 'disturbing' reviews
Virgin Island received backlash from viewers for the show's 'exploitative' premise, which involved encouraging adult virgins to embrace their sexuality for the first time on TV Channel 4's boundary-pushing series Virgin Island has officially been renewed for a second series, despite a wave of backlash from shocked viewers who branded it "disturbing" and "exploitative". Virgin Island, which has been described as "groundbreaking and heartwarming" by Channel 4 bosses, followed 12 adult virgins on a journey of sexual self-discovery at a luxury Mediterranean retreat. Participants in the show were guided through a unique intimacy course by sexologists Celeste Hirschman and Dr. Danielle Harel, which is designed to help them overcome their fears around sex and connection. Although every episode aired after the 9pm watershed, many viewers were stunned by the show's unfiltered approach to experiential sex therapy – which saw one of the participants lose their virginity to sex surrogate on the show. At the time, audiences took to X to share their thoughts, with one writing: "It feels wrong to be watching this." Another viewer shared: "This is just getting disturbingly weird now." "This is so exploitative. I'm panicking myself and I'm watching it at home!! I can't even imagine being one of them right now. This is awful," wrote a third. And a fourth said: "I'm sorry but that Virgin island maybe the most disturbing thing channel 4 has ever released". Despite the controversy, Virgin Island has quickly become Channel 4's biggest streaming hit of the year across all genres. It is now the most-watched show for 16–34s in 2025 so far, overtaking major titles like Taskmaster, Gogglebox, and Married at First Sight Australia. The first season had a series average of 1.4 million viewers per episode, and received almost 9 million total streams, so it is clear the show struck a chord with younger audiences. Ian Katz, Channel 4's Chief Content Officer, said: "Virgin Island is the kind of show only Channel 4 would make – exploring an important but under-discussed social issue with warmth, sensitivity and wit. We're delighted that it resonated with younger viewers." The show's commissioning editor, Jonah Weston, added: "This is a live issue among young people, and from the brave cast to our wonderful experts, I don't think I've ever worked on anything quite so bold, warm and well-intentioned. Watch out for season 2 – it'll be even bigger and bolder." Executive Producer Rob Davis called the show's success "incredible", adding: "Its bold and fresh approach clearly struck a chord with the younger generation." One of the most controversial practises on the show was the use of surrogate partners, who were professionals the cast were allowed to practise sexual intimacy with if they so desired. However, the show's sexologists have defended Channel 4's methods, emphasising that the stars were looked after every step of the way. Celeste and Danielle shared: "A surrogate partner therapist works in conjunction with a traditional licensed therapist and then a client. The therapist is there so if anything emotional comes up for the client that they have someone to process it with, and the surrogate partner can go step-by-step through erotic experiences." Danielle continued: "During the show, all the coaches, all the practitioners were really mindful about consent. We taught them first to say no. We kept checking, tracking their like nervous system and if they're like recoiling like., 'What's happening?' "So we're constantly aware of making sure that they are comfortable even though it's not like it was easy, but they're comfortable with the next growing moment." Virgin Island participant Dave, who was the only person to lose his virginity on the show, has also spoken highly of it, saying: "I had an amazing time on the island… I can't speak highly enough of the experts and production team. I was lucky enough to achieve the ultimate aim of the series whilst on the island, and I can't wait to see the next group of participants go on the same journey. It's completely changed my life."

Ditch your weekend plans to watch 'addictive' Italian crime thriller for free
If you're prepared to spend your weekend with two detectives on the hunt for a serial killer, Channel 4 has your next binge watch waiting. In the Italian crime drama Pale Mountains – titled Brennero when it was released in the US and Canada earlier this year – there's a murderer on the loose who is exclusively targeting German-speaking locals. Set in the Alpine city bridging Italy and Austria, the new four-part gritty thriller touches on the political and cultural forces at work in what is the meeting point between northern and southern Europe. All the while, a manhunt unfolds for a serial killer the police tried to catch years before but failed to. Think David Fincher's 2007 film Zodiac for what sort of vibe you'll get. The killer laid low for three years, but when a German man is killed, it has all the hallmarks of the notorious serial killer who was never caught. Heading up the investigation in the city of Bolzano are a classically mismatched pair of law enforcement officers, with grisled and discredited inspector Paolo Costa (Matteo Martari) and ambitious but rookie prosecutor Eva Kofler (Elena Radonicich). As they try to piece together the serial killer's identity, Costa and Kofler must also settle their differences, with radically contrasting approaches to hunting down the infamous Monster of Bolzano (Paolo Briguglia). The two officers become a microcosm for the differences within Bolzano itself as they try to uncover the so-called Monster, who has shattered what was an already fragile the sense of community. The Italian and German-language drama is now available for free on Channel 4 through the broadcaster's Walter Presents offshoot. Launching back in 2016, it is an on-demand platform with a selection of award-winning foreign-language dramas, hand-picked by Walter Iuzzolino. Strap in, because the Pale Mountains episodes are bumper-length and close to two hours a piece. More Trending Within the four two-hour episodes, there's a focus on the main manhunt, as well as other cases woven in around it and the personal lives of those involved. The show has a 6.9 rating on IDMb, from over 100 user reviews, and has been labelled an 'addictive watch' by Good Housekeeping. View More » Pale Mountains is available to stream on Channel 4.
