Govt scraps plan to impose luxury goods tax
The Prime Minister said, however, the underlying principle has been incorporated into the revised sales tax framework, with luxury and discretionary items now taxed at either 5% or 10%.
Anwar further noted that the newly implemented low-value goods (LVG) tax, effective from Jan 1, 2024, has brought in around RM500mil in revenue this year.
He said the government's latest review of the sales tax rate and expansion of the service tax scope, which came into effect on July 1, is expected to increase national revenue by RM5bil this year and double to RM10bil in 2026.
In a written parliamentary reply on Tuesday (July 29), Anwar, who is also the Finance Minister, said the ongoing diesel subsidy rationalisation has resulted in savings of up to RM600mil a month for the Federal Government.
He added that other fiscal reform measures have contributed significantly to strengthening national revenue, including the implementation of the Capital Gains Tax (CGT) on unlisted shares, which took effect on March 1, 2024.
'Based on the current volume and value of transactions involving unlisted shares, the government estimates revenue collection at around RM800mil annually.
'However, actual figures will only be confirmed after corporate taxpayers submit their annual income tax returns,' he said.
Anwar clarified that while a digital goods tax (DGT) has not been introduced, a service tax on digital services (StoDS) has been in place since Jan 1, 2020.
This tax, levied on digital service providers offering or subscribing services online or through other electronic networks, has generated RM1.6bil in revenue so far in 2024, Anwar added.

Malaysia condemns Israeli Zionist regime's Gaza takeover plan
PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia has condemned the Israeli Zionist regime's decision to launch a full military takeover of Gaza. The Malaysian Foreign Ministry described the move as a calculated violation of international law. The ministry stated that this action aims to permanently occupy Palestinian lands, disregarding human rights and justice. 'After 22 months of relentless bombings and siege, this move threatens the two-state solution,' the ministry said. The statement warned that Israel's actions could end the peace process and deny Palestinians their right to self-determination. Malaysia urged all nations to reject Israel's apartheid policies and recognise Palestine based on pre-1967 borders. The country also called for East Jerusalem to be recognised as the capital of Palestine. Immediate actions must ensure a permanent ceasefire and Israeli forces' withdrawal from Gaza, the statement added. Malaysia demanded an end to the blockade on humanitarian aid and full UN membership for Palestine. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim reaffirmed Malaysia's firm stance on defending Palestinian rights. He emphasised Malaysia's commitment through international advocacy and collaboration with global leaders. - Bernama

Aidilfitri Madani events cost RM10mil
THE Federal Government spent over RM10mil each in 2024 and 2025 on Hari Raya Aidilfitri Madani celebrations held across seven states. Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof (pic) said the celebrations last year cost RM10,050,196.66 in total – averaging RM1.43mil per state – while this year's events amounted to RM10,928,222.53, or roughly RM1.56mil per location. The Aidilfitri events have been held on a broader scale nationwide since 2023, compared with the 2022 open house which was limited to the Klang Valley and incurred a higher cost of RM11mil, he said. Fadillah said no financial contributions were received from the private sector or government-linked companies for the 2024 and 2025 celebrations, adding that all expenses were fully borne by the Federal Government as part of its social investment under the Malaysia Madani framework. 'These programmes aim to strengthen ties between the government and the people and to foster a spirit of unity and inclusiveness,' he said in a written reply to Abdul Latiff Abdul Rahman (PN–Kuala Krai), who wanted a breakdown of expenses for the Aidilfitri events. Fadillah explained that the events served not only as festive gatherings but also as platforms to promote national unity, harmony and cross-cultural understanding. As large-scale events held across multiple states, the celebrations required spending on logistics, open-access public feasts and promotional activities to encourage widespread community participation. 'All expenditure was managed prudently and transparently in line with existing financial procedures,' he added.
