Former Mamelodi Sundowns chairman Angelo Tsichlas, who died in a car accident on Tuesday evening, was deeply passionate about the club and worked tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure its success.
Tsichlas – though he held the chairmanship role – was content to let his managing director wife, Nastasia, take the spotlight as Sundowns dominated the domestic game, particularly in the early stages of the Premiership-era. But do not misconstrue that to mean he was not an integral part of laying the foundation for the Brazilians becoming the giants they are today.
Current Sundowns owner Patrice Motsepe summed up Angelo's contribution to the club in his message of condolence to the Tsichlas family:

'I am deeply saddened by the passing of (Tsichlas), who was an outstanding football administrator and a close friend. Angelo and Natasha made enormous contributions — with the Krok family and before them Zola Mahobe — to the development and growth of Mamelodi Sundowns.
"We are all immensely grateful to them for laying the foundations for the current success of Mamelodi Sundowns. Angelo will forever live in our hearts and minds. May Angelo Tsichlas' soul rest in peace.'
While Angelo always cut the figure of a serious club boss who took no nonsense from anyone — be it players or officials — he had a softer side too, often flashing his infectious smile behind the spectacles whenever one visited the Sundowns offices at PresMall in downtown Johannesburg.
A lingering memory I have of Tsichlas is of a night at Loftus Versfeld Stadium when Sundowns won their maiden Castle Premiership title. As the players celebrated on the pitch, Angelo came rushing up to the press box.

Their loss to Borussia Dortmund made their last group match a must-win match. 'Tashreeq Matthews is anti-Sundowns man, he has been missing sitters for them consistently,' tweeted @LifeofMelo. 'Tashreeque Matthews is simply not good enough and uyayidlisa iteam. So many chances WASTED!!! by him. I do not know how this incompetent coach started him again,' tweeted @Umlando5. Sundowns coming home, but showed the world who they are at CWC
Mamelodi Sundowns had their chances for the win that would have put them into the last 16 in a hard-fought Club World Cup (CWC) clash against Fluminense at Hard Rock Stadium on Wednesday, but the South Americans shut the South Africans out for a 0-0 draw. Fluminense got the result they needed to advance. However, it showed the respect they had for a Sundowns who have had a competitive, at times thrilling sojourn at Fifa's expanded, 32-team tournament that the more illustrious team resorted to shutting the game out for much of the 90 minutes in a hot Miami. Coach Miguel Cardoso's Sundowns will take the plane home disappointed, but should hold their heads high. They got tongues wagging internationally with the quality of their football, earning a first-ever CWC win, 1-0 against South Korea's Ulsan HD, then losing 4-3 in a thriller against Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund in one of the games of the group stages. Two groups are left to be completed, but all four African teams are officially out of the tournament. Sundowns arguably made the biggest impression of the clubs from the continent.

Sundowns can be proud, but… The Tshwane giants can leave the USA with their heads held high, as well as several million dollars richer. There will also, however, be a feeling of what might have been after the way Miguel Cardoso's side dazzled at times in defeat to Borussia Dortmund, and here. Sundowns came flying out of the blocks in a hot Miami, testing Fluminense 'keeper Flavio three times in the opening ten minutes. Lucas Ribeiro produced some dancing feet to create some space for himself, and fired in a shot that was on target but easy for Fabio to gather. Ribeiro then provided a sublime through ball for Tashreeq Matthews, who had only Fabio to beat, but the onrushing 'keeper made the block. Masandawana push Fabio also repelled Divine Lunga's near post effort, as Sundowns piled on the pressure. Fluminense defender Juan Freytes courted disaster in the 15th minute as his attempted clearance from inside his own penalty area was blocked by Themba Zwane. The ball could have gone anywhere but it looped into the air and the danger was cleared. The Brazilian side grew into the game as the half wore on and Matheus Martinelli's fine pass found Fluminense captain Jhon Arias. He smashed his shot across Williams but also just wide of the far post. Cardoso made a sensible decision to take off Teboho Mokoena at half time. The Sundowns midfielder was booked early on by English referee Anthony Taylor for a poor tackle. Taylor chose not to book Mokoena for another late challenge closer to the break, but he did look at risk of a red card. Jayden Adams came on in Mokoena's place. Hard to break down Sundowns kept the ball well and were patient but battled to find a way through a Fluminense side that looked better-organised defensively in the second half. And it was Fluminense who came close to scoring in the 57th minute. German Cano raced into the box to meet Arias' cross and slammed his shot against the post. ALSO READ: Chelsea sign SA youngster Schaper Cardoso brought on Arthur Sales and Peter Shalulile as Sundowns searched for that vital goal. But it wasn't to be for the men in yellow.
