"If there are issues, they would be discussed privately": Shashi Tharoor

India Gazette16 hours ago

Ahmedabad (Gujarat) [India], June 28 (ANI): Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, who has highlighted the disagreements with the current party leadership, on Saturday responded to a social media post he made earlier amid the visible tensions between him and some in the party, saying that if there are issues he would discuss them privately.
'I am not going to get into political issues here. If there are issues to discuss, they would be discussed privately. When the time comes, I shall do so,' Tharoor, who was speaking at the Ahmedabad Management Association Program, told reporters.
The Thiruvananthapuram MP earlier made a cryptic post after Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge took a veiled jibe at Shashi Tharoor, saying he is in the Congress Working Committee 'because his English is very good'.
Speaking at the event, the Congress MP discussed his recent visit to Russia and updated attendees on his meeting with counterparts, where he reiterated the message that the multi-party parliamentary delegation had already conveyed to the leaders here.
'I was in Russia on a previously planned engagement. It was also an opportunity to touch base with my counterparts. In India, our Parliamentary Foreign Affairs Committee covers both the Upper House and the Lower House. In many other countries, each House has a different head, so I saw my counterparts in the Upper House and the Lower House. I also saw my old friend, the Russian Foreign Minister, but by and large, our message has been consistent. Fortunately, the delegation sent by our government had already been there and met these people, so my task was not a difficult one to reinforce the message. Russia has been an old and trusted friend of India for some time, and it's always good to maintain these relationships. I also did some public events there, interviews and interaction with students. So it was that kind of visit. None of the dramatic sort of James Bond stuff that people have been speculating about, nothing of that nature, no secret missions there,' Tharoor said.
During his visit to Russia, he met several top Russian leaders, including the Deputy Chairman of the Russian Federation Council (the Upper House) and also interacted with students.
Tharoor's remarks regarding his intentions to discuss certain issues with respect to his party come amid an apparent unease in his ties with some in the party leadership.
Kharge, who addressed a press conference slamming the Modi government, took another dig at Tharoor, saying, 'Some people say Modi first, the country later'.
Tharoor had recently praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a newspaper article.
'Shashi Tharoor's English is very good, that's why he has been taken in the CWC (Congress Working Committee). I supported this,' Kharge said.
'But what I want to say is that all of us, the entire opposition, have come together and said we stand with our Army, our Army that is fighting, we are with them. We say nation first, but some people say Modi first and country later. What can we do about that?' he added.
However, the Congress chief sidestepped a question on Congress taking action against Tharoor. He also brushed aside a question asking whether the party is afraid of taking action against Tharoor.
Hours later, the Congress made a post on X that prominently carried a picture of a bird. 'Don't ask permission to fly. The wings are yours. And the sky belongs to no one,' the post read. (ANI)

Bihar education system is ruined, the worst in the country under JD(U)-BJP government: Digvijay Singh

Ahead of the Bihar Assembly election due in October-November, Rajya Sabha member and senior Congress leader Digvijay on Sunday (June 29, 2025) slammed the Janata Dal (United)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government in the State for 'ruining' the education system in the State. Mr. Singh, while addressing the media at the party office in Patna, said that the government schools in the State are in a poor condition and the dropout rate is highest in the country. The schools don't have electricity, teachers, computers and libraries. He shared data from the school education report, UDISE+ 2023–24, of the Modi government at the Centre. Expressing regret, Mr. Singh said that this is the worst performance in the whole country. He said that out of 78,120 government schools, 16,529 still do not have electricity and only 5,057 have computers, a mere 6.5%. 'There are 2,637 schools in Bihar where there is only one teacher, and 2.91 lakh students are enrolled in these schools. At the same time, there are 117 schools in the State where not even a single student is enrolled, yet 544 teachers are posted there. Bihar also has the highest school dropout rates: Primary (Classes 1–5): 8.9%, Upper Primary (Classes 6–8): 25.9%, Secondary (Classes 9–10): 25.63%,' Mr. Singh said. In budget 2025-26, the Bihar government claimed to have allocated ₹60,954 crore for education but the truth is that this money is lost to corruption, he alleged. '1.13 crore not enrolled for higher education' 'The BJP-JD(U) government has ruined Bihar's future in higher education as well. The recent report of AISHE 2021–22 (All India Survey on Higher Education) has once again exposed the plight of higher education in Bihar,' Mr. Singh said. Sharing data from the report, he pointed out that GER (Gross Enrolment Ratio) was 17.1%, i.e., the estimated population of the State in the age group of 18–23 years is 1.36 crore, but out of these, only 23.33 lakh are enrolled in undergraduate programmes. He said that it means 1.13 crore youth are deprived of higher education. 'Bihar has the lowest number of higher educational institutions per lakh population in the country, with a total of 37 universities, 1,092 colleges, 315 standalone institutions, totalling to 1,387 higher education institutions; but this number is very low for the population,' Mr. Singh said. The Congress leader also said that there are only seven colleges per one lakh population, against the national average is 30 colleges per lakh, which is the lowest in India. 'Future of youth being auctioned' Speaking on exam paper leaks in Bihar, Mr. Singh said that the future of the youth is being bid upon and the paper mafia is in cahoots with the government. 'In Bihar, under the patronage of the BJP-JD(U) government, a dirty business of scams is going on in government recruitments and competitive examinations. In the last seven years, more than 10 cases of exam paper leak have come to the fore in the State,' he said. The network of 'paper mafia' which is tarnishing the glorious legacy of education in Bihar is becoming increasingly active and the business of these mafias is worth thousands of crores, he said. Mr. Singh listed out rates fixed by the alleged paper mafia for every competitive exams: for NEET PG – ₹70-80 lakh, NEET UG – ₹30-40 lakh, banking exam (bank PO) – ₹15-20 lakh, police SI – ₹25 lakh and police constable – ₹10-15 lakh. Earlier in the day, he called on Congress ally Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) supremo Lalu Prasad along with Congress leader Akhilesh Prasad Singh at Mr. Prasad's 10, Circular Road residence to enquire about his health.

Russian FM says West would never secure victory against Kremlin by using Ukraine as proxy

Moscow, June 29 (UNI) Slamming the West, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Sunday that they would never be able to secure a strategic victory over Russia by using Ukraine as a proxy, reports Russia's state-owned-media TASS. "We have very close ties in all areas, and they are of particular importance, especially in the current very difficult and radically changed international situation, when we are witnessing an unprecedented confrontation between our country and the collective West, which has decided once again to go to war against us and inflict a strategic defeat on Russia, using the Nazi regime in Kiev as a ram. 'The West has never been able to do this, and it won't work this time. They're probably starting to figure it out," Lavrov said during his meeting with Kyrgyz Foreign Minister Jeenbek Kulubayev. He added that Moscow is open for honest efforts to resolve the war, but it has to be a practical and realistic one, contrary to the 'rigged' approach of some European leaders, Sergey Lavrov said. "As (Russian) President (Vladimir) Putin has said recently, we are ready to defend a just settlement of the Ukrainian crisis', stating that Moscow will is not open to the 'rigged approaches we are being pushed to, I would like to stress again, by some European leaders." Lavrov went on to berate French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, alleging that both leaders lack common sense and are trying to reestablish France's and Germany's control over Europe. "We are surprised to listen and look at spells sounded from European capitals. Macron and German Chancellor Merz have recently written a joint article, 'Europe must arm itself; Russia is the main threat, it wages imperialistic wars, it intruded into Georgia in 2008, into Crimea and Donbass in 2014, into the territory of entire Ukraine in 2022; the goal of Putin is to undermine European security," Lavrov said. "I believe that these quotes alone are enough for a person who has some understanding of what is happening in Europe and follows events to understand that these people have completely lost common sense and are openly trying to return to the days when France and Germany wanted to conquer Europe, primarily the Russian Empire and the Soviet Union," he noted.
