Paramount's ‘Novocaine' tops box office amid historic March slump

Express Tribune16-03-2025

Paramount Pictures' action-comedy Novocaine, starring Jack Quaid, claimed the No. 1 spot at the weekend box office with a modest $8.7 million debut.
The film, about a man who feels no physical pain, fell below early projections of $10 million despite earning $1.5 million from Thursday previews.
The weekend marked the slowest March box office opening in 29 years, with overall earnings reflecting a 39% decline compared to 2019.
In the No. 2 spot, Warner Bros.' sci-fi thriller Mickey 17, starring Robert Pattinson, saw a sharp 60% revenue drop from last weekend, earning $7.6 million. Close behind, Focus Features' Black Bag—a spy thriller directed by Steven Soderbergh and starring Cate Blanchett and Michael Fassbender—earned $7.5 million domestically and $11.7 million globally.
Marvel Studios' Captain America: Brave New World took fourth place with $5.2 million, bringing its North American total to $186 million. Meanwhile, Columbia Pictures' Paddington in Peru added $3.85 million, pushing its domestic earnings to $41.3 million.
Among lower-budget releases, Studiocanal's The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie debuted at No. 5 with $3 million, followed by The Last Supper at $2.8 million. A24's drama Opus, starring Ayo Edebiri and John Malkovich, underperformed with just $1 million, less than half of industry expectations.
As Hollywood grapples with declining theatrical revenue, the underwhelming performance of new releases signals continued struggles for the industry.

Sabrina Carpenter roasts immature men in hilarious Manchild music video

Sabrina Carpenter is taking aim at emotionally immature partners in her new single Manchild, released June 5. The following day, the pop star unveiled a humorous and theatrical music video directed by Vania Heymann and Gal Muggia, in which she lampoons the absurdity of modern dating. Set to lyrics critiquing emotional immaturity — 'Stupid, or is it slow / Maybe it's useless / But there's a cuter word for it, I know: Manchild' — the video follows Carpenter through the American West as she attempts to escape a series of hopeless suitors. Whether she's riding on the back of a jet ski barreling down a desert highway, crammed in a shopping cart hitched to a motorcycle, or balancing on a motorized recliner, each vignette shows her failing to get anywhere with men who can't seem to grow up. The Grammy-nominated artist poked fun at the concept on Instagram, writing: 'it's exactly what i pictured in my head… no animals were harmed in the making but some men were.' Manchild is Carpenter's first new release since the deluxe edition of Short n' Sweet, which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200. She co-wrote the track with songwriter Amy Allen and producer Jack Antonoff. On Instagram, she said it was written after finishing the album: 'this song became to me something I can look back on that will score the mental montage to the very confusing and fun young adult years of life.' Carpenter is currently on a brief hiatus from her Short n' Sweet world tour, which resumes in July with performances in London's Hyde Park, followed by a North American leg.

'this one's about you!!' – sabrina carpenter announces new single 'Manchild' after viral teaser buzz

Sabrina Carpenter has sparked excitement among fans with a new Instagram post teasing her upcoming release, 'Manchild.' The pop singer shared a striking photo of herself hitchhiking, accompanied by the caption, 'this ones about you!! 'Manchild' is out this Thursday 6/5 8pm EST ❤️ special 7" vinyl available now.' This confirms that Carpenter's new music will be released on June 5, marking the latest chapter in her evolving discography. This post follows a viral video Carpenter shared yesterday, featuring her hitchhiking in micro denim shorts and heels. The 16-second clip, captioned 'we're READY,' quickly gained traction online, fueling fan speculation about the nature of her upcoming project. The video's casual tone and visual style led many to make a possible connection to 'Manchild,' particularly after promotional billboards appeared across Texas. These billboards, credited to SC Entertainment, prominently featured the word 'Manchild' along with cryptic phrases such as 'HEY MEN,' 'AMEN,' and 'I SWEAR THEY CHOOSE ME I'M NOT CHOOSING THEM.' The billboards also included a 2025 copyright, further indicating a new release was imminent. Though Carpenter has not clarified whether 'Manchild' will be a single, music video, or part of a larger project, industry observers note the timing is strategic. Carpenter's North American Short n' Sweet Tour resumes in July, suggesting 'Manchild' could become a summer anthem. Moreover, Carpenter is set to headline Primavera Sound Barcelona this weekend alongside Charli XCX and Chappell Roan, providing an ideal platform for promoting new material. The caption to the post, 'this ones about you!!', still remains in question, as to whom this is directed. Is this single also going to be a subtle or a much more direct dig towards ex-boyfriend Barry Keoghan, as it was seen in 'Please Please Please' remasterd/remix video.
