York sports charity bids to buy hall used by railway since 1926
"There must be hundreds, if not thousands, of people in and around York who have played sport at the RI," he added.York Railway Institute was established in the 19th Century as a place for the city's railway workers to improve their education, and it had a library, classrooms and a dining hall. The locomotive erecting shops and carriage works next door were converted into a gymnasium by 1926, and there was a boxing ring which was later replaced with badminton courts. The Institute still hosts badminton tournaments at national level, as well as activities such as pickleball, squash and judo.Trustee Heather Robertson said it was fitting that the chance to buy the "much-loved" venue coincided with the centre's upcoming 100th anniversary. "Due to various works around the station, and the York Central development scheme, we've felt a little like we're on borrowed time."We've had really good support from Network Rail, especially since Covid, but the time has run out on that lease arrangement."Ms Robertson added that if the charity could not raise the funds in time, it would impact the clubs that used the facility, many of which compete under the York RI name.
"If this did disappear, you'd hope those clubs would survive and find a different venue but that seems like a difficult thing to do," she said."It not a case of just picking a different sports centre - there's nothing like it in terms of location and what it offers as a venue." Dermot Heslop, a judo coach and York RI treasurer, said the venue meant "an awful lot" to his family, who had been involved since the 1940s through working on the railways."If we can buy the building it gives me an opportunity to say thank you to the Railway Institute for everything it's done for me as an individual," he said."When you think of the demographic in York, there are people in their 80s who are playing here and there are children under the age of five."We have nationalities from all over the world that come to the venue."A Network Rail spokesperson said the organisation was "delighted to support the long-term future" of the York RI."Our teams have been working collaboratively with York RI to secure this historical building's future as a community sports facility," they said."This partnership reflects our commitment to supporting local communities whilst preserving railway heritage, and forms part of our broader Queen Street estate plans."York RI has a number of fundraising events planned until 2027, starting with a 24-hour "badminton-athon" on 2 August.Isobel Avey, supervisor at the centre, said that there was a "massive emphasis on community" among the teams that used the space."I'm excited to see how everyone is rallying around, that's a reflection of how much people love the place and want to keep it open."It would be such a shame for it to go, it would be so upsetting."

Euro 2025 Final TV viewing figures as clear winner emerges in BBC vs ITV battle
The European Champioship final between England and Spain was broadcast by both the BBC and ITV on Sunday and there was a clear winner in terms of the viewing figures The BBC were celebrating alongside the Lionesses on Sunday as they won the viewing figures battle with ITV. A peak live audience of 12.2 million watched England make history in the Euro 2025 Final, beating Spain on penalties to secure back-to-back European Championship titles. At peak viewership, the final was the most watched television moment of 2025 across all TV channels. The BBC say that their broadcast peaked at 11.6 million on BBC One - 59 per cent of all TV audiences - with a further 4.2 million streams of the match on iPlayer, their website and app. The number dwarfs that of ITV, who brought in a peak of just 4 million viewers, according to Broadcast Sport. Mirror Football have contacted ITV's press office for further details. During last year's men's European Championship final, also between England and Spain, the Beeb also came out on top. This time around, the result on the pitch was different but it was still the BBC's day. Alex Kay-Jelski, director of BBC Sport, commented: "This final was a landmark moment in sporting history. The kind of moment people will remember exactly where they were when they watched it. "The incredible Lionesses took us on an emotional rollercoaster, and millions were hooked on BBC coverage from start to finish - from live streaming post-match analysis to millions following our live page and younger audiences in huge numbers on social media." Which channel did you watch the final on? Let us know in the comments section. Both the BBC and ITV have already secured the rights to broadcast the Women's World Cup in 2027 which will be hosted by Brazil. England were narrowly beaten by Spain in the 2023 World Cup final, the only final which they've lost under Sarina Wiegman. The Lionesses boss hopes that this summer's tournament will have a lasting impact after record TV audiences and attendances in Switzerland. "How I have experienced this tournament is that the level went up again, the intensity of the games went through the roof," Wiegman said after the final. "I hope it will boost the women's game even more, not only in England but beyond." The Dutch coach added: "The staff put so much effort in. They want to support the team, they prepare everything and the players are just lovely to work with. I'm sure tears could come later on. It will sink in, 'What is happening here?!' We just try to win every game and it's really nice when it works." Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content. Trump praises UK on trying to reduce small boat crossings
Donald Trump suggested that the UK is 'doing a fantastic thing' in trying to reduce immigration via small boat crossings. Mr Trump said he knows 'nothing about the boats' when asked about the issue while meeting Sir Keir Starmer at his Turnberry golf resort, but said 'my hats are off to you' if the UK is trying to reduce immigration. Sir Keir and his wife Lady Victoria were greeted by the President and a chorus of bagpipes as they arrived in South Ayrshire on Monday. When Mr Trump was asked about how he would deal with small boats, Sir Keir explained that it refers to people who are crossing the Channel. Mr Trump told reporters: 'If you're stopping immigration and stopping the wrong people, … my hats are off to you. You're doing, not a good thing, you're doing a fantastic thing. 'So I know nothing about the boats, but if the boats are loaded up with bad people, and they usually are, because, you know, other countries don't send their best they send people that they don't want, and they're not stupid people, and they send the people that they don't want.' Turning to the Prime Minister, Mr Trump added: 'And I've heard that you've taken a much stronger stance on this.' Mr Trump later added: 'Europe is going… is a much different place than it was just five years ago, 10 years ago. 'They've got to get their act together. If they don't, you're not going to have Europe anymore, as you know it, and you can't do that. This is a magnificent part of the world, and you cannot ruin it.' The latest data from the Home Office indicates that 122 people crossed the Channel in small boats on Saturday. The meeting between the leaders comes as a part of Mr Trump's five-day-long private trip to Scotland. The UK US trade deal and the situation in Gaza are among the items expected to feature in their discussions at Turnberry. Mr Trump took questions from the press as the bagpipes continued to play. Asked about tariffs on whisky, he could be heard saying: 'We'll talk about that, I didn't know whisky was a problem. I'm not a big whisky drinker but maybe I should be.' And he said of the special relationship: 'Our relationship is unparalleled.'

Rude wash-bag message from boss helped inspire England to Euro glory
England boss Sarina Wiegman delivered a censorable secret message to the newly crowned 2025 European champions in the form of a wash bag, forward Beth Mead has revealed. The Lionesses defended the title they first won three years ago at Wembley with a 3-1 penalty shootout victory over world champions Spain in Basel after extra time ended in a 1-1 draw. It was revenge for their 1-0 loss to the same side in the 2023 World Cup final, but required a campaign of crazy comebacks and must-win victories in every match following their opening loss to France. 'Sarina had a certain little way of motivating us,' said Mead, after the Lionesses became the first English football team to secure a major trophy on foreign soil. 'It was great, it was funny, it was everything. She did it again tonight. 'She had a little toiletry bag that said b****** get s*** done, and b****** got s*** done today. That is it, drop the mic.' Mead's Arsenal team-mate Mariona Caldentey opened the scoring for Spain in the 25th minute, ensuring England would require a third consecutive comeback to make it back-to-back European titles and seal a third straight for Wiegman, who lifted the same trophy with the Netherlands in 2017. Alessia Russo nodded home Chloe Kelly's cross after the break to ultimately force a shootout, then sealed by substitute Kelly's emphatic top-corner spot kick. Kelly's winner was the best birthday present imaginable for major tournament debutant Aggie Beever-Jones, who turned 22 on Sunday and was serenaded by supporters who sang 'Happy Birthday' during the final. 'It's such an incredible tournament, back-to-back champions,' she said. 'The girls have done a brilliant job. I couldn't have had a better birthday than this. What a present! This will be the best day of my life. I can't quite believe it.'
