Georgia Community Rallies Behind Ximena Arias Following ICE Arrest

Yahoo13-05-2025

DALTON, Ga., May 13, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- The family of 19-year-old Dalton State College student Ximena Arias is speaking out following her arrest by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) after a traffic stop that has since been acknowledged as a mistake. The incident has mobilized broad community support and drawn renewed attention to long-standing gaps in federal immigration policy.
Brought to the U.S. at the age of four, Ximena Arias-Cristobal has called Georgia home for 15 years. She is a college student paying out-of-state tuition, an active member of her church, and a well-loved part of the Dalton community. She has no criminal record and is widely recognized for her character and community involvement.
Her arrest — following a mistaken traffic stop now clarified by the Dalton Police Department — has raised concerns about how current enforcement practices affect individuals with deep ties to their communities. Young people are especially impacted, as many have no viable legal pathway to permanent residency since President Trump closed new DACA applications in 2017.
"We are shining a light on Ximena," her family shared. "She is not a threat. She is not a flight risk. She is a neighbor, a student, a daughter. We are proud to live in a community that is showing up for her. She represents the best of what our community stands for."
Thanks to legal support and advocacy, her family is hopeful she will be released on bond and allowed to return home while her case proceeds. A GoFundMe campaign has already raised over $60,000 to support her legal expenses. Funding her existing legal fees and future fees will mount well into the tens of thousands of dollars.
Ximena's bond hearing comes after the Dalton Police Department dash cam footage showed that she did not, in fact, commit a traffic violation. "I'm not bitter that this happened," Ximena said. "I appreciate the Dalton Police Department's willingness to acknowledge the error and do the right thing. My dad reminded me on the phone that I was born with a purpose. I hope that part of that purpose is to show how our immigration system needs reform and to encourage lawmakers to find a better path forward."
Following the traffic stop, Ximena was booked into the Whitfield County Jail and then, in accordance with federal law, transferred to the Stewart Detention Center, where she remains. The experience, her family says, has been traumatic and isolating, both emotionally and financially.
"We are so grateful every time we hear her voice," her mother said. "We just want to bring her home."
A System Under Strain
Ximena's immigration attorney Charles Kuck emphasizes that her case is not an isolated incident. "Detaining nonviolent residents like Ximena clogs local systems, creates unnecessary costs, and separates families," he said. "Her case is especially difficult because there is no immediate remedy under current law — even though her arrest was based on a documented mistake."
"The reality is that Congress has not acted to modernize our immigration laws in over 35 years," Kuck continued. "Ximena is a living example of how that inaction plays out in real life. We will continue to advocate for her release and for a future where cases like hers are treated with the compassion and common sense they deserve."
A Call to Action for Georgia
Ximena's case has become a touchpoint for community members and advocates who want to be part of the solution:
Drive Safely:
Remind friends that even minor traffic stops can have serious consequences.
Support Legal Advocacy:
Donate to trusted local nonprofits. Dalton examples include CLILA (Coalition of Latino Leaders) and the Latin American Association (LAA).
Contact Your Representatives:
Ask Georgia lawmakers to support bipartisan, commonsense immigration reform.
Consider asking representatives: "What are you doing to ensure that long-term residents like Ximena are not detained for minor infractions? How can we create a pathway to legal status for individuals with no options?
Her family is optimistic that Ximena will be reunited with her loved ones soon and is already imagining a joyful, peaceful homecoming.
"We believe in our legal system," her mother said. "But we also believe in compassion and common sense. Dalton is our home. We're proud to belong to a community that continues to show us great love and support."

National Press Club Statement on Proposed Cuts to Public Media Funding

WASHINGTON, June 6, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Below is a statement from Mike Balsamo, president of the National Press Club, on efforts to cancel funding for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, which helps fund NPR and PBS. "Public media is not a partisan issue. It is a public service. For decades, public media has delivered trusted journalism and essential community information to millions of Americans — especially in regions where no other independent news source exists. As local newsrooms close across the country, news deserts are expanding. In many rural areas and underserved communities, public media remains the only free, reliable source of local news. It connects citizens with essential information, whether during a hurricane evacuation, a public health emergency, or local civic coverage that holds government accountable. Democracy depends on an informed public. Public media plays an irreplaceable role in ensuring that Americans have access to the journalism they need to fully participate in civic life. Defunding public media would harm the very communities that rely on it most — and weaken our collective ability to stay informed. The National Press Club urges Congress to reject this shortsighted proposal and to protect public media as a vital pillar of American democracy and an essential service for all citizens." Founded in 1908, the National Press Club is the world's leading professional organization for journalists. With more than 2,500 members, the Club is a leading voice for press freedom in the U.S. and worldwide. Baby hit by stray bullet during shootout in Spring Hill

SPRING HILL, Tenn. (WKRN) — A baby is recovering at the hospital after a stray bullet from an early morning shootout in the street tore through a Spring Hill home and struck the sleeping child in the head. According to the Spring Hill Police Department, officers responded to a reported shooting in the 3000 block of Shandor Street in the Harvest Pointe subdivision shortly before 1 a.m. on Friday, June 6. PREVIOUS: Baby injured after shot fired into Spring Hill home Authorities said they believe a sedan stopped next to a person out on Shandor Street. The occupants of the vehicle reportedly shot at the young man, who fired back. Door bell camera footage shows grainy figures in and around a car. You can hear the loud gunshots before the vehicle accelerates out of frame. Several of the roughly 15 rounds fired in the shootout penetrated a nearby home. Police said one of the bullets went through a wall and grazed the skull of a 1-year-old girl who was sleeping inside the house. Body camera footage shows the intense response as a large number of officers flooded the neighborhood to collect evidence and search for those involved in the shooting. 'Hopefully they find out who did this and they seek justice,' a mother who lives in the neighborhood told News 2. The woman didn't know the family of the child who was injured, but like many residents, she was shaken by the outburst of violence that rocked the normally quiet community. 'I'm feeling for the family and our community, and I hope that we get through this and we find out who these people are. It's just horrible what's happened here today,' she said. News 2 spoke with the family's pastor from Southview Church, Josh Clendenen, who said the little girl suffered a skull fracture and some bleeding on the brain, but she is stable. ⏩ 'As a church community, we were shocked to hear of the events that took place last night in Spring Hill, and to learn one of the babies of our church family was injured, was devastating. We are rallying around the family with prayers and support, but also praying diligently for the protection of our community and its first responders,' Clendenen said. 'We're asking everyone to keep this family in your prayers and we encourage you to pray for your communities as well. We know God was protecting the entire family, and are believing for a complete healing and speedy recovery.' While the family didn't have a GoFundMe page by the time this article was published, the community has set up a meal train where people can donate both meals and money. Follow this link if you'd like to make a contribution. Meanwhile, SHPD urges Harvest Pointe residents to check any home camera footage between 12:30 a.m. and 1:30 a.m. for any vehicles or person(s) walking during those hours. You can send videos to Detective Jonathan Tiller at jtiller@ If you have any other information related to this investigation, you can submit an anonymous tip by clicking here. The SHPD is offering a reward of up to $1,000 for any information leading to an arrest. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
