Lionel Messi needs to find his groove again to lead Inter Miami in Leagues Cup
Inter Miami needs Messi to find his groove again if they're going to advance in the tournament.
The 2025 Leagues Cup features a new format: While the matches are between Major League Soccer teams and LIGA MX clubs from Mexico, the top four clubs from each league will advance to the knockout stage.
Earning three points for a win isn't enough in this year's edition. Goal differential is the next tiebreaker in the table, placing a greater emphasis on scoring to advance to the quarterfinals.
'You look at the table, and you've won and you're in sixth place because of the goal difference. There are still two games to play, a lot can happen,' Inter Miami coach Javier Mascherano said a day before the club's match against Necaxa at Chase Stadium on Saturday, Aug. 2.
Messi delivered assists on goals scored by Telasco Segovia and Marcelo Weigandt in Inter Miami's 2-1 win against Atlas on July 30, but complained about feeling fatigued in his first match after having last week off.
Messi was suspended for skipping the MLS All-Star Game on July 23, causing him to serve a one-game suspension on July 26. Before the layoff, Messi scored two goals in four of five matches following the FIFA Club World Cup.
'Even if [the rest] seems better, for me it's worse because I need to compete. I feel good physically the more matches I play and get into rhythm,' Messi told Apple TV. 'The other day they didn't let me compete, and I felt it in the first half, but the important thing is that we won.'
Mascherano expects Messi to find his form again, especially with Inter Miami having three of its next four matches at home. The only away match is against in-state rival Orlando City on Aug. 10.
'Unless Leo feels tired and doesn't say anything, the idea is that if he feels good, he'll always play,' Mascherano said of Messi.
Inter Miami needs its biggest star to keep pace with the MLS clubs in Leagues Cup.
The Seattle Sounders thrashed reigning Concacaf Champions Cup winners Cruz Azul 7-0, while L.A. Galaxy beat Tijuana 5-2 on July 31. The Portland Timbers toppled Atlético de San Luis 4-0, and Minnesota United beat Querétaro 4-1 on July 30.
Seattle, Portland, the Galaxy and Minnesota are the top four clubs in the MLS side of the Leagues Cup table, followed by FC Cincinnati (which beat Monterrey 3-2 on July 31), Inter Miami, the Colorado Rapids and New York Red Bulls. Those eight MLS clubs won their first Leagues Cup match.
The top four on the LIGA MX side are Tigres UANL, FC Juarez, Puebla and Necaxa after the first round of matches. After facing Necaxa, Inter Miami will host Tigres UANL on Wednesday, Aug. 6 in their last match of the group stage.
'What keeps you going is trying to play well, get a good result, and then we'll see what happens,' Mascherano said. 'But I don't think there's much point in feeling sorry for yourself or focusing too much on other results.'
Necaxa is led by new coach Fernando Gago, barely two months into the job. They beat Atlanta United 3-1 in their Leagues Cup opener on July 30.
Gago was a starter alongside Messi and Mascherano in Argentina's 1-0 win in the Olympic men's soccer final in 2008, and came off the bench in their loss to Germany in the 2014 FIFA Club World Cup final.
'Fernando is a friend from soccer – someone I had the privilege of sharing many years with on the national team, but he's also someone I care about, someone I've shared moments with outside of soccer as well,' Mascherano said of Gago. 'It's always special to face people you know, people you've shared so many good times with. And in the end, when the ball starts rolling, I'll try to do everything I can to compete in the best way possible and win so we can still hope to qualify.'

Giants' defensive line is determined to live up to the hype and high expectations
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — Dexter Lawrence set out to quiet the chatter minutes after the first practice of New York Giants training camp. The veteran defensive tackle had already challenged his fellow players not to listen to the outside noise. 'They want to talk about our D-line and all this,' Lawrence said, 'but we haven't done anything yet.' Linebacker Brian Burns shared the same thought process a few days later, with a little more profanity tossed in, acknowledging what the formidable front looks like on paper. And while adding No. 3 overall pick Abdul Carter to a group already featuring Lawrence, Burns and Kayvon Thibodeaux has the potential to make this an elite pass rush, those involved are quick to insist they need to prove it first. "Everything looks good with the names that we have and the potential and this and that," Burns said. 'It's all on us. We can take this as far as we want to go.' Teammate Darius Muasau called it 'the best D-line in the NFL right now," which is lofty praise that can get tossed out there in the dog days of summer with camps in full swing and before any meaningful games are played. Even the exhibition season might not be an indication of what the unit can do. That will get tested in September with the gauntlet of opening at NFC East rivals Washington and Dallas and at home against defending AFC champion Kansas City, followed by then Justin Herbert and the Los Angeles Chargers. Coach Brian Daboll, among many others, is looking forward to seeing how Lawrence, free agent signing Roy Robertson-Harris, Thibodeaux, Burns and Carter handle hefty expectations. That might mean Burns, Thibodeaux and Carter all lining up on an obvious passing down to show what they all can do. 'To have three guys that can roll and play and do different things for us, it really opens up the creativity for us." German great Mueller signs with MLS Whitecaps
Bayern Munich and Germany forward Thomas Mueller has signed with Major League Soccer's Vancouver Whitecaps, the Canadian club announced on Wednesday. The 35-year-old has signed through the end of the 2025 MLS season with an option for 2026, Vancouver said. Mueller announced earlier this year that he would be departing from Bayern Munich - his home for 25 years. His tenure included 13 Bundesliga titles and two Champions League triumphs. "I'm looking forward to coming to Vancouver to help this team win a championship," Mueller said in a statement. "I've heard great things about the city, but first and foremost I'm coming to win. "I've had great conversations with Axel Schuster and Jesper Sorensen, and now I can't wait to play in front of the supporters and to see all of the fans come out to BC Place as we head towards the playoffs." Mueller arrives at a Whitecaps team currently second in the Western Conference, one point behind leaders San Diego but with one match in hand. "He not only brings a winning pedigree and exceptional football intelligence, but also a tireless work ethic that will elevate the entire team," Whitecaps chief executive Schuster said in a statement. "Thomas is a natural leader whose passion for the game is infectious. This is a statement signing by our club and our ownership -- a transformative moment for our club and our city. 'Definitely at Detroit,' LaFleur told Clark. 'They brought a pressure up the middle, we didn't pick it up. He was able to — I don't know how — he was able to evade the defender. Reset his feet, flip his hips, and his Christian Watson over the middle on a high cross.' Based on sheer difficulty, there is no argument against LaFleur's pick. Love had to navigate an immediate pressure, get into a throwing position and then make a near impossible throw while getting hit. The window he needed to hit was tiny. The chance of a turnover from a misthrow was high. But Love made it happen. Here are a couple of looks at the throw: No matter the angle, this was a special play from a quarterback. It required a bit of everything, including the athleticism to avoid a rusher and reset, and the arm talent to deliver a perfect ball under pressure. And it arrived in a big spot. The Packers were down three points in the fourth quarter against the Lions at Ford Field, and the 29-yard completion helped set up a game-tying field goal. The Packers still ended up losing, 34-31.
