Suranne Jones details challenges of Netflix's Hostage role
Actress Suranne Jones has revealed her thoughts on playing fictional British Prime Minister Abigail Dalton in her latest Netflix series Hostage, reports the Manchester Evening News.
Chatting to journalists including Reach Screen Time at a London screening yesterday (August 18), the 46 year old star made a startling confession about taking on the role of UK leader Dalton, admitting she wouldn't fancy the job in reality.
She said: "A woman, before she's even put on her very high, hurty shoes, she has a lot of baggage and a lot of things that she is carrying: the way she looks, the way she dresses, the way she's been educated.
"All of those things. How she behaves with her family or her background, everything, before she starts to go out into the world and getting judged for it.
"Obviously, I'm well known. People recognise me. I try to keep a private element to my life, but then I do want to show support of the charities I work for and all of that stuff, and the community theatre that I like to give elevation to, so I drew on a lot of that stuff. But I wouldn't want to be a prime minister."

She continued discussing the programme: "The early name for the show was 'The Choice' and I think that's the thing, the choice of wanting a job like that, the choice of your family or your country.
"It blows my mind, I can't even imagine... obviously, I had to because I play the prime minister, so I did have to imagine. But these big, big choices, they're huge and so it's just making people think."
The five-part political thriller witnesses Dalton being blackmailed following her husband's kidnapping whilst he's working overseas, with the captors threatening his murder unless she steps down from office.

Product Description
The kidnapping happens during French President Vivienne Toussaint's (Julie Delpy) visit as both women prepare for challenging negotiations, creating additional layers of complexity and political manoeuvring.
The Oldham-born actress, most recognised for her performances in Gentleman Jack and Vigil, thoroughly prepared and researched the character by consulting numerous female politicians.
Hostage's creator Matt Charman outlined some of the research lead star and producer Jones undertook for the part.
He revealed: "What she didn't say and what's part of her research is we spoke to a lot of female politicians.
"Suranne spoke to people who have been leaders and prime ministers, and who were really wonderful and breaking it down and saying, 'It's how knackered you are at the end of the day. It's how much reading you've got to do. It's how hard it is to see your friends. You have to schedule these appointments months in advance'."
He continued: "We spoke to a few politicians with kids and the thing they said the most [...] was their guilt is always around the children.
"It's always around what the kids have to give up, how hard it was for the kids, how social media has become this thing... imagine being someone's son or daughter of someone in the cabinet and people saying stuff about your mum and dad everyday, posting videos, scaring you, sending stuff directly to you.
"That's what most politicians feel sick about. I'm tough enough that I get through it, but my kids go to school and it's awful for them."
Alongside Jones and Delpy, Hostage features a stellar cast including Lucian Msamati, Corey Mylchreest, and Ashley Thomas.
The programme will be released as a complete boxset for viewers to devour in one marathon session.

Government looking at contingency options for where to house asylum seekers after Epping court ruling
Update: Date: 2025-08-20T07:43:46.000Z Title: Government looking at contingency options for housing asylum seekers after Epping hotel court ruling Content: Security minister Dan Jarvis has said the government is looking at contingency options for where to house asylum seekers after a court ruled on Tuesday that they cannot live in a hotel in Epping, Essex. According to the PA news agncy, he told Times Radio on Wednesday: We're looking at a range of different contingency options following from a legal ruling that took place yesterday, and we'll look closely at what we're able to do. Asked whether other hotels housing asylum seekers have the proper planning permission, Jarvis said: Well, we'll see over the next few days and weeks. Other local authorities will be considering whether they wish to act in the same way that Epping [Forest] district council have. I think the important point to make is that nobody really thinks that hotels are a sustainable location to accommodate asylum seekers. That's precisely why the government has made a commitment that, by the end of this parliament, we would have phased out the use of them. Keir Starmer's asylum plans have been plunged into turmoil after a high court ruling blocked people seeking refuge from being housed in the Essex hotel. Epping Forest district council was granted an interim injunction on Tuesday to stop asylum seekers from being placed at the Bell hotel, after continuing protests nearby. More on this story in a moment, but first here are some other developments: The government has agreed a new deal with Iraq to return illegal migrants as part of wider moves to limit small boat crossings. The deal, signed by Home Office minister Dan Jarvis, will set up a formal process to return Iraqis who have arrived in the UK with no right to stay in the country. The head of the British armed forces will tell his American counterparts the UK is prepared to send troops to defend Ukraine's skies and seas but not to the frontline with Russia, as planning intensifies for a postwar settlement. Tony Radakin, the chief of the defence staff, will on Wednesday attend meetings at the Pentagon designed to finalise what 30 different countries are willing to commit to Ukraine's national security. UK inflation rose again last month to a higher-than-expected 3.8% amid higher food prices and travel costs, adding to fears that the Bank of England will delay further interest rate cuts. Figures showed the annual rate as measured by the consumer prices index climbed from June's 3.6% reading, sitting above the central bank's 2% target for the 10th consecutive month. The UK Space Agency (UKSA) is set to be absorbed by Whitehall as the government seeks to cut the cost of bureaucracy. The agency will merge with Peter Kyle's Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) in April 2026, in a move the government said would cut 'duplication' and ensure 'clear ministerial oversight'.

Madelyn Cline's forgotten Stranger Things role as tear jerker romance lands on Prime Video
Fans may have forgotten the star's earlier role in one of Netflix's biggest show A star of a new movie now streaming on Prime Video looks unrecognisable from their role in Netflix hit Stranger Things. The Map That Leads To You is now streaming on the retail giant's streaming platform from today (August 20). The film follows Heather, a young woman setting off on an adventure across Europe with her best friends before settling into her perfectly planned life. When she crosses paths with Jack, a magnetic and mysterious stranger, their instant spark ignites an emotional journey neither of them expected. As their connection deepens, secrets, life choices, and hidden truths will test their bond—and change her life in ways she never imagined. It is directed by Lasse Hallström who also helmed the movie Dear John. The film is also an adaptation of the novel of the same name written by JP Monninger described as being about love, destiny, and the courage to choose your own path. Leading the cast is KJ Apa, famed for his role as Archie Andrews in Riverdale. Alongside him is Outer Banks and Glass Onion star Madelyn Cline. However, Cline previously held a now forgotten role in one of Netflix's biggest shows, in Stranger Things. It is not surprising some fans don't make the connection and remember her part straight away, not just because it was a supporting role but also because the star was near unrecognisable. She played the character of Tina, who appeared in the second season of the popular show set to air its finale later this year. She appears in two episodes, the first titled MADMAX as well as episode two called Trick Or Treat, Freak. Tina was a student at Hawkins High School and hosted a Halloween Bash party at her house in October 1984. She is seen as noticing and being one of several girls immediately interested in Billy Hargrove as soon as he makes his own introduction. He even attends her party, with many other recognisable students from the main cast also showing up. This includes Nancy, Steve, Billy, Tommy H and Jonathan. Tina is seen welcoming her guests dressed up as Madonna from her Like A Virgin video. According to FanWire, her small role in Stranger Things, while also filming The Originals, convince Cline to give up on college and pursue her acting dreams. She said: "I was in college driving back and forth from Myrtle Beach to Atlanta to work on The Originals and Stranger Things, and I realised that something had to give. I wanted to at least try to pursue it full-time. So, I ended up dropping out, packing my car up, and leaving for LA."
