FAA's new runway incursion system aims to help boost safety. Here's why they say it's not coming to N.Y. yet.

How the new runway incursion device works
The new device alerts controllers if a runway is already occupied, and uses voice prompts and flashing lights to get controllers' attention. It's expected to go online at more than 70 locations nationwide by 2027 - but New York and New Jersey won't be part of the initial rollout.
"What we want to do, going into this, is identify those airports that have perhaps increased risk, and put those safety mitigations in place as early as possible," acting FAA Administrator Chris Rocheleau said. "So that's not to say those 79 airports are the only airports we're looking at."
While the rate of runway incursions has improved, it is still 15% higher than a decade ago. In 2014, there were 26 runway incursions for every million arrivals and departures, compared to 30 in 2024.
New simulators will help controllers get trained faster, FAA says
CBS News New York got an exclusive tour of the FAA's tech center near Atlantic City where the new technology was on display.
While New York and New jersey may not be part of the initial rollout of the runway incursion device, the FAA says it is using other tools here already, like 4K tower simulators that replicate real airports for air traffic control trainees. More than 50 locations, including Newark Airport, have been upgraded with the simulators, the FAA said.
"Using high fidelity tower simulators get us to qualification, certification 25% faster. So that represents a quarter of their time. The more tools we can put in their hands at any location, to include Newark, is going to speed up their time and get folks ready to do the job," FAA transportation specialist Johnny Riaz said.
The simulators allow controllers to train for different weather conditions at various airports. A simulation of a downpour at an airport in Philadelphia can easily be changed to clear skies, for example.
"At this moment in time, when we're dealing with the infrastructure issues and improvements we're trying to bring about, I think it's going to be absolutely critical to keep ourselves as the safest airspace system in the world," Riaz said
Riaz said he believes it is "absolutely safe" to fly right now, and close calls on runways are expected to drop slightly for the second year in a row.

The crowd at the gate seems sparse, and hope springs within you that you might get a row to yourself, that you'll be able to lie down in economy. But I can gladly report that being able to book such seating in advance, by way of Air New Zealand's Economy Skycouch, softens none of the pleasure. Earlier this summer, I flew the direct, 17-hour route from New York (JFK) to Auckland (AKL) sprawled out on the Skycouch, and I can confirm that this option is excellent and economical. You don't get any of the frills you'll find in Business Premiere (my review of Air New Zealand's more extravagant business class offering can be read here) save for a sheet to spread across the row, plus extra pillows (two) and blankets (three), but it hardly matters because you'll have a likely be sleeping much more of the way than you would in a regular economy seat. A lone traveler enjoys Air New Zealand's Skycouch—booking the upgrade for one passenger is the most comfortable although the least cost-efficient. Courtesy Air New Zealand What is Skycouch, and how much does it cost? Skycouch is a booking option in economy class that you can add during seat selection for an added fee. Skycouch seats occupy certain rows sprinkled across the Economy cabin of Air New Zealand's 777-300ER and 787-9 aircraft. For a flight between New York and Auckland where Skycouch is available, the fee sits in the realm of $750. The exact price varies based on the route and demand. For example, an October flight from Los Angeles to Auckland currently costs $1,200 to add Skycouch (while a business class seat is around $6,000), and a flight from Houston to Auckland in the same month costs $1,400 (compared to a business class fare of $6,500). Selecting Skycouch gives your party a row of three seats to yourselves. The fee, whatever it lands at according to the dynamic pricing, is for your party rather than per ticket, meaning that it is especially cost-effective for parties of two (or three, if the third is a lap child). If you're flying with infants under two years old, the airline provides a Skycouch kit with a harness and "cuddle belt' or an optional infant pod, subject to availability.

Hurricane Erin is forcing several beaches in Massachusetts to close for swimming
The forecast does not call for Hurricane Erin to get too close to Massachusetts, but the storm is causing some beaches to close for swimming as it could create big waves and dangerous rip currents on the coast. Gov. Maura Healey asked residents on the coast to "stay safe and alert" as Erin passes by. "Rip currents and high surfs are a serious threat to swimmers," the governor said in a statement. "Please be careful while the storm passes through our region and keep an eye out for neighbors who might need assistance." Healey noted that many state beaches are in the "high risk" area of the National Weather Service's surf zone forecast. High surf advisories are in effect through Friday and may extend through the weekend, the governor's office said. The Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency said "inexperienced swimmers should avoid the water due to dangerous surf conditions." Double red flags at a beach mean it is closed for swimming. The Cape Cod National Seashore says park staff are monitoring Hurricane Erin and the potential for deadly rip currents. The park is telling beachgoers on its website "do not risk getting swept out to sea." Below is a list of beaches that have announced closures related to Hurricane Erin. Nantucket is closing all south shore beaches for swimming on Wednesday and Thursday. The closed beaches include Surfside, Cisco, Miacomet, Nobadeer, Ladies and Madaket beaches. "Please stay out of the water! Life threatening rip currents and dangerous surf across the south shore of Nantucket from Hurricane Erin!" the Nantucket Harbormaster posted. On Martha's Vineyard, South Beach will be closed to swimming. Lifeguards and rangers will not be on the beach for their own safety. On the South Coast, Westport beaches are closed for swimming due to "dangerous surf conditions and rip currents." The beaches will be open to walkers. The Horseneck Beach parking lot is closing at 6 p.m. Wednesday, police said. Minot Beach and Peggotty Beach in Scituate were closed Monday due to rough water conditions. The town said the beaches will be monitored on a daily basis to determine if closures are necessary.

Mid-sized US cities dominate ranking of emerging business destinations
American Express has released new travel data revealing emerging cities for business trips, and the results may surprise you. In a report released last month, the company analyzed year-over-year growth in hotel and airline transactions among commercial customers. American Express's report made no mention of bustling coastal markets like New York, Los Angeles or San Francisco, but rather several mid-sized cities were included in list of the emerging business travel areas, a handful of which have experienced population growth in recent years. According to the company, these cities are rising in popularity as business travel destinations. Richmond, Virginia A hub for several Fortune 500 companies, like Performance Food Group, CarMax, Altria and Dominion Energy, American Express says it has seen an increase in companies flocking to the southern city due to incentive-based business expansion legislation. Virginia has exceeded $100 billion in capital investment commitments from company expansions statewide, Gov. Glenn Youngkin said in a news release in March. Richmond is undergoing developments in the Richmond Diamond District, which will transform 67 acres into a neighborhood to keep up with demand. Another project will target the City Center Innovation District to accomplish similar goals, making the city more attractive to businesses. Columbus, Ohio Home to over 240 startups, Columbus has managed to attract several biotech and technology companies specializing in AI innovation. Census data from this year shows Columbus is major driver of growth in the Midwest, with a growing population that nears 1 million. Charleston, South Carolina Charleston, known for its stunning beaches and charming historic architecture, has experienced a boom of tech, aerospace and automotive companies flocking to set up hubs there, Amex notes. It recently hit a record of $14.03 billion generated from tourism in 2024, a 7.1% increase from the prior year and businesses are taking notice. Ingevity, a company that markets and manufactures specialty chemicals, announced last year it is investing $53 million over five years in its Charleston County manufacturing facility. "This significant commitment reflects the strength of our partnership and highlights Charleston County as a leader in fostering innovation and sustainable growth." Boise, Idaho This city experienced rapid growth during and after the COVID-19 pandemic. According to moving data from HireAHelper, four times as many people moved to Boise, Idaho than left it in 2020. The migration primarily stemmed from people in western states moving to the area. In 2020, the city's population was about 230,000 and has since increased to roughly 237,000. That rapid increase has business leaders setting up shop in the city, with companies in the software, cleantech and outdoor lifestyle industries expanding their presence in Boise. New Orleans Walkability, a compact layout, and unique culture is what's driving business to New Orleans, American Express reports. Additionally, city leaders have taken steps to increase ongoing infrastructure enhancements at local venues. Those investments are expected to attract more conventions, create jobs and boost the local economy. Last week, 1834 Ventures, an early-stage venture capital firm, announced the launch of the inaugural $20 million fund to invest in startups found by alumni of Tulane University, one of the city's universities, further bolstering economic mobility. 1834 Ventures is channeling the funds into Louisiana "with the goal of building a more vibrant startup ecosystem" and "diversifying the state's economy," according to a news release from Louisiana Economic Development.
