Levi Colwill backs Chelsea to compete for Premier League glory
The Blues shocked the football world with an astonishing 3-0 win over Champions League holders Paris Saint-Germain in the Club World Cup final.
Not many people saw that coming, especially after PSG swatted aside Bayern Munich and Real Madrid in the previous rounds by a combined scoreline of 6-0.
However, Chelsea thrived off being written off and delivered a performance that sent shockwaves throughout the world. The Blues also enjoyed a fantastic end to the 2024/25 campaign.
They won 14 out of 16 games across all competitions, qualifying for the Champions League and winning the Europa Conference League in the process.
For the first time since the Todd Boehly-Clearlake Consortium took over Chelsea, there is a real sense of progress which has been missing at Stamford Bridge over the past couple of years.
But Colwill sees the recent success as a turning point. 'We had ups and downs like a lot of teams last season,' he told The Athletic.
'We still stayed around the top four and were never miles behind. With the fans, we really went all together and just pushed.
'When that happens, I feel something just lights up and you just win, win, win.'
That unity carried Chelsea to international success. But what stood out most for Colwill was the lack of respect the team received heading into the final against PSG.
'It felt like no one thought we had half a chance, even in the final, and I thought that was very disrespectful,' he added. 'It gave us that fire in the belly, and we proved everyone wrong.'
With the 2025/26 campaign just weeks away, Colwill is convinced Chelsea have what it takes to challenge for the biggest prizes and has his eyes on the Premier League title.
'We feel like we can definitely compete for the Premier League,' he said. 'The players we have in our squad are among the best, and we are really excited for this season, to once again prove people wrong.'

Jamie Mulgrew on his European wish as he embarks on another continental campaign
Jamie Mulgrew has done it all in his 20 years at Linfield but there's one thing the 39-year-old would love to do before he hangs up his boots. For the Blues captain reaching the group stages of a European competition would be "the pinnacle" of a storied career. Mulgrew knows it is not an easy thing to achieve having gone agonisingly close with Linfield in the past but it's a dream he holds dear. READ MORE: Rory McIlroy makes honest admission after granting Erica Stoll her mega-money wish READ MORE: Katie Taylor faces boxing suspension after defeating Amanda Serrano in trilogy fight "People can go on about finances, but for me personally as a player, to be able to play in the group stages of a European competition would be the pinnacle really," Mulgrew said ahead of tonight's Champions League qualifier against Shelbourne. "So again, you reach this stage every year of playing in Europe and that's what the excitement would be to be able to achieve that. And again, what Larne did obviously was fantastic. Would we all love to do that? Yes. "Is it going to be easy? Definitely not. But that doesn't mean you can't have those dreams and those aspirations to one day achieve that." Mulgrew begins another European campaign tonight at Tolka Park and he says it still excites him as much as ever. "I'm 39 now, so I get excited about every game because you don't know when it's going to finish," he said. "I think it's vitally important that when you come into your work every day you enjoy and you embrace everything that comes with it. "Certainly tonight will be the same. No matter what team you're playing, it's the early rounds of the Champions League and the opportunity to possibly progress. "And yes, you can go on about finances and all that there, but us as players, it's the prestige of getting through a round. "The finances available for the club, obviously it's fantastic, but first and foremost, for us to get through a round and to give ourselves an opportunity then to push on and hopefully reach a group stage eventually, that's got to be the main goal for us as a team and individuals."
