Rednote joins wave of Chinese firms releasing open-source AI models

Open sourcing allows Chinese companies to demonstrate their technological capabilities, build developer communities and spread influence globally at a time when the US has sought to stymie China's tech progress with export restrictions on advanced semiconductors.
Rednote's model, called dots.llm1, is available for download on developer platform Hugging Face. A company technical paper describing it was uploaded on Friday.
In coding tasks, the model performs comparably to
Alibaba
's Qwen 2.5 series, though it trails more advanced models such as DeepSeek-V3, the technical paper said.
RedNote, also known by its Chinese name Xiaohongshu, is an Instagram-like platform where users share photos, videos, text posts and live streams. The platform gained international attention earlier this year when some U.S. users flocked to the app amid concerns over a potential
TikTok
ban.
The company has invested in large language model development since 2023, not long after OpenAI's release of ChatGPT in late 2022.
It has accelerated its AI efforts in recent months, launching Diandian, an AI-powered search application that helps users find content on Xiaohongshu's main platform.
Other companies that are pursuing an open-source approach include Alibaba which launched
Qwen 3
, an upgraded version of its model in April.
Earlier this year, startup
DeepSeek
released its low-cost R1 model as open-source software, shaking up the global AI industry due to its competitive performance despite being developed at a fraction of the cost of Western rivals.

(Bloomberg) -- Several of China's state-owned automakers have pledged to standardize bill payment periods for their suppliers to 60 days after authorities raised concerns about supply chain financing. At least three carmakers, including Dongfeng Motor Group Co., Guangzhou Automobile Group Co. and China FAW Group Co. issued similar statements on Tuesday saying their payment plans are aimed at promoting efficient capital flows across supply chains in the automotive industry. Chinese carmakers, embroiled in a domestic price war, have been seeking lower-cost components and delaying payments to suppliers by months, creating a form of quasi-debt financing. Regulators including the Ministry for Industry and Information Technology last week addressed the issue of supply chain financing with the heads of major electric vehicle manufacturers on concerns the price war was becoming unsustainable. Chinese authorities issued new rules in March to protect small and medium enterprises, stipulating that bills should be paid within 60 days and that large firms shouldn't force smaller businesses to accept non-cash payments such as promissory notes or use these methods to delay payments. The regulations will take effect in June. Supply chain financing is common in the auto industry. BYD Co., China's best-selling car brand, has a promissory note system called Dilian, or Dilink in English, that it uses as a form of payment to its suppliers and can be redeemed at a later time. The platform had issued 400 billion yuan ($55.7 billion) worth of notes as of May 2023, the last time that BYD disclosed such information. BYD took an average of 275 days to pay suppliers in 2023, Bloomberg compiled data show. A report by accounting consultancy GMT Research puts BYD's true net debt at closer to 323 billion yuan, compared with the 27.7 billion yuan listed on its books as of the end of June 2024, through delaying its payments to suppliers and other related financing. Oil prices down, markets assess US-China trade talks outcome
Oil prices fell in early trade on Wednesday as markets were assessing the outcome of U.S.-China trade talks, yet to be reviewed by President Donald Trump, with weak oil demand from China and OPEC+ production increases weighing on the market. U.S. and Chinese officials agreed on a framework to put their trade truce back on track and resolve China's export restrictions on rare earth minerals and magnets, U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said on Tuesday at the conclusion of two days of intense negotiations in London. Trump will be briefed on the outcome before approving it, Lutnick added. "In terms of what it means for crude oil, I think it removes some downside risks, particularly to the Chinese economy and steadies the ship for the U.S. economy - both of which should be supportive for crude oil demand and the price," said Tony Sycamore, a market analyst for IG. Oil import data from China earlier this week and ongoing production increases from OPEC+, which includes the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and allies such as Russia, were adding to the downside.
