Longhorns opponents for Southwest Maui Invitational 2025 Tournament revealed
After weeks of waiting, the bracket for the 2025 Southwest Maui Invitational was released on Tuesday. The tournament, which will feature the Texas Longhorns, will be played at the Lahaina Civic Center on Nov. 24-26, 2025. As the Longhorns prepare for their first season under Sean Miller, they now know who they will be facing.
In the quarterfinals on Nov. 24, Texas will face Arizona State at 10 pm. They are then set to take on either Washington State or Chaminade on Nov. 25. The tournament will wrap a day later, with the Longhorns hoping to make an appearance in the finals. Their competition will include Boise State, NC State, Seton Hall, and USC.
Over the last few years, Texas has become a familiar participant in this tournament. They also competed in the Maui Invitational in 1993, 2004, 2008, 2012, and 2020. The Longhorns currently own a 10-5 record in the tourney, including one championship in 2020. For Miller and his staff, the goal is to leave Hawaii with another title.
Entering this tournament, Texas holds a 4-1 all-time record against its first opponent, Arizona State. Their last matchup came in 20224 when the Longhorns emerged with an 87-85 victory on a Cameron Ridley put-back at the buzzer. The Longhorns have also never lost to the Sun Devils at a neutral site.
Although the Longhorns' focus is on winning a national title, this tournament should be a good test earlier on. It will also be a good chance for the Longhorns to build on their team chemistry. There are many new faces after a 2024-2025 campaign that did not meet expectations.
If Miller and his team can take care of business, then the Longhorns will have a reason to celebrate early on before entering one of the most challenging stretches of their schedule.

Micah Parsons is still a spectator at Cowboys practice as he awaits a contract extension

FRISCO, Texas (AP) — Micah Parsons made his usual sideline appearance for the final practice of training camp for the Dallas Cowboys, who are back in Texas after nearly a month in California. While there were no signs Wednesday that the star pass rusher's hold-in was leading to progress in stalled contract negotiations, first-year coach Brian Schottenheimer didn't hesitate when asked if Parsons would be on the field for the opener at Philadelphia on Sept. 4. With or without a contract extension. 'I feel good that Micah's going to be out there against the Philadelphia Eagles,' Schottenheimer said before the workout inside the 12,000-seat stadium at the team's headquarters in Frisco, north of Dallas. Parsons has cited a back injury as the reason he hasn't participated in practice since the Cowboys reported to California last month. There's little question what the real reason is behind him sitting on a chair on the sidelines rather than going through drills with teammates. Schottenheimer dodged a question on whether there was a deadline for Parsons to have enough real practice time to be ready for the regular season. Most of the starters, including quarterback Dak Prescott, won't play in the preseason, which wraps up Friday night at home against Atlanta. But Parsons' idle time will be an issue if nothing changes in the next week. 'You'd like it sooner rather than later, but Micah's going to be prepared,' Schottenheimer said. 'Micah knows his body as well as anybody. The best thing of him being here is that he has been able to do some of the walkthroughs. He has been able to be in the meetings. The physical side of it, usually the players are the experts with where their bodies are.' Parsons is entering the final season of his five-year rookie contract. The 2021 first-round draft pick is set to make $24 million, but is seeking a new deal with an average annual value in excess of $40 million. Parsons has a pretty good case to be the highest-paid defensive player, even if that designation doesn't last long. The 26-year-old is one of just two players to have at least 12 sacks in his first four seasons since sacks became an official stat in 1982. Pro Football Hall of Famer Reggie White is the other. While the Cowboys were in California, Parsons made a trade request on social media, saying he felt misled in discussions with owner Jerry Jones and suggesting he didn't want to play another game with Dallas. He has spoken to reporters just once since the start of camp. Barring a trade, Parsons' options are limited. Even after his contract expires, Parsons is subject to the franchise tag in 2026 and 2027. Jones has said he has no intention of trading Parsons, and has expressed confidence that a deal will get done. Schottenheimer said he hasn't been frustrated by the constant questions. 'I think my tone hasn't changed. My answer hasn't really changed,' Schottenheimer said. 'I'm focused on the field. I'm focused on the guys that are working. The business side is going to take care of itself. I could answer those questions all day long.' ___ AP NFL:

Cowboys coach Brian Schottenheimer expects Micah Parsons to play in season-opener amid messy trade request

Though there hasn't been much movement publicly, Dallas Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer is confident that star Micah Parsons will be out on the field for their season opener in a few weeks. Whether or not that means Parsons and the Cowboys have a new deal in place, however, is a different question. [Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2025 NFL season] 'I feel good about that, yeah,' Schottenheimer said on Wednesday when asked if he thought Parsons would be taking the field in Week 1, via The Dallas Morning News' Calvin Watkins. 'I feel good that Micah is going to be out there against the Philadelphia Eagles.' Parsons is entering the fifth-year option of his rookie contract this fall, which is set to pay him about $24 million this season. He has undoubtedly proven himself to be one of the best defensive players throughout the league already. He had 12 sacks and 43 total tackles in 13 games last season while dealing with an ankle injury. But despite having months to get it done, Parsons and the Cowboys failed to reach a contract extension this offseason. That led to Parsons making a trade request early in training camp, something that owner Jerry Jones said he doesn't plan to honor. Parsons has been with the Cowboys throughout the entire preseason, but he's been limited in part due to a back injury. Jones and the Cowboys don't appear to be any closer to a new deal, either. According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, things have gotten 'personal' and each side is 'dug in.' 'I don't know if necessarily talks will [pick up], but we've got a game coming, and he's under contract,' Jones said last week as the team wrapped up its California portion of training camp. There is plenty of time to go before the Cowboys take the field against the Eagles on Sept. 4. Jones, who has been in this position plenty of times before in his time with the franchise, could easily reconcile with Parsons in time and strike a new deal. But at least for now with negotiations looming, both Jones and Schottenheimer are clear on one thing. They expect Parsons out on that field in Week 1.
