Chinese fighter jet comes within 200ft of Philippine plane in mid-air standoff

Independent5 days ago
This is the moment a Chinese fighter jet appears to intercept a Philippine Coast Guard aircraft carrying journalists during a patrol near Scarborough Shoal.
Footage onboard the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) plane shows the jet flying within 200 feet, circling and matching the aircraft's course for 20 minutes. Chinese navy ships below can be heard demanding the aircraft 'leave immediately' on the cockpit radio.
It happened around the Scarborough Shoal in the South China Sea, a disputed atoll 140 miles west of the Philippines. At least four Chinese coast guard vessels, suspected 'maritime militia' ships, and two U.S. warships were nearby.
The incident comes after a Beijing warship accidentally crashed into a smaller PCG ship on Monday (11 August) in the same area. China claims almost the entire South China Sea despite a 2016 tribunal ruling rejecting its claims.

Horror moment illegal immigrant trucker suddenly pulls U-turn on busy highway causing T-bone crash that killed three

THIS is the terrifying moment a truck driver suddenly pulls a U-turn on a busy highway and kills three in a horrific T-bone crash. Harjinder Singh, who has been living in the US illegally since 2018, allegedly made the fatal turn on an "Official Use Only" area on the Florida Turnpike. 6 6 6 With little time to stop and no where to turn off, the minivan is believed to have slammed into the commercial semi-truck at full pelt - killing the driver and two passengers. Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles said troopers were rushed to the scene just before 3pm on August 12, where they extricated the victims from the van. Terrifying footage shows the moment Singh blocked the highway causing the incoming Chrysler Town and Country minivan to slam into the lorry. The obliterated minivan's parts appear strewn across the toll road as rescue teams desperately try to retrieve the bodies. According to Flordia Highway Patrol, Singh crossed over the northbound travel lanes to make the turn when the people carrier - also travelling north - smashed into the truck. It then became wedged under the left side of the trailer, killing two passengers instantly. While the driver was pulled out of the vehicle alive, they tragically died in Lawnwood Hospital, Fort Pierce that evening. The victims' names have not been released, but were confirmed to be a 37-year-old woman from Pompano Beach, a 30-year-old from Florida City and a 54-year-old from Miami. The motorist was arrested on Tuesday in St. Lucie, Florida and charged with three counts of vehicular homicide and immigration violations. Singh, who is in custody, will be deported after the conclusion of his state charges, Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) said. Boy, 2, dies and two pedestrians injured after 'driver crashes through barrier into car park' as man in his 20s arrested The department's executive director Dave Kerner said: "The actions taken by the Defendant while operating a commercial tractor-trailer are both shocking and criminal." He added: "Three people lost their lives as a result of his recklessness, and countless friends and family members will experience the pain of their loss forever. "Harjinder Singh is in custody on state vehicular homicide charges and immigration violations. He will no longer be able to damage and destroy the lives of Floridians and visitors. "At the conclusion of his state charges, he will be deported. The Florida Highway Patrol remains committed to enforcing both state and federal law to ensure that people that are a danger to others face justice behind bars." The motorist had arrived in the US illegally in 2018 and obtained a commercial driver's license in California. In California, undocumented residents can obtain licenses under the Assembly Bill 60, which doesn't require a proof of legal residence. Singh and his two passengers, Californian men aged 25 and 28, were not injured. Official White House Rapid Response said: 'This individual is an illegal immigrant who was granted a commercial driver's license by the State of California — and now, three innocent people are dead. "He has been arrested for vehicular homicide and an ICE detainer has been issued.' 6 6 6

Dangerous fake Labubu warning after thousands seized - how to spot one

Labubu figures and dolls on display at a Pop Mart store Parents and collectors have been warned after more than 2,000 "dangerous" fake Labubu dolls were seized across the UK. The viral plush toys – quirky fang-toothed 'monster elf' figures made popular by Chinese toymaker Pop Mart – have become a global collector's craze. But in recent weeks, Trading Standards teams have seized thousands of unsafe counterfeit Labubu dolls. In just one month, over 2,000 were confiscated from 13 retailers in North Tyneside, with further seizures in Greater Manchester, Humberside, North Somerset, and Scotland. Parents have been advised to look for genuine characteristics - such as nine teeth on 'The Monsters' series - and a holographic POP MART sticker - a scannable QR code linking to the official Pop Mart website. The dolls, produced by Pop Mart, retail from £18 but some sell for £215. Parents have been warned after more than 2,000 "dangerous" fake Labubu dolls have been seized Christine Heemskerk, Chartered Trading Standards Institute lead officer for product safety, said: "Fake dolls are poorly made in unsafe manufacturing premises. Counterfeiters do not follow safety standards and are unlikely to have good factory controls in place. "A fake Labubu doll might contain hazardous chemicals in the plastic which can cause lifetime damage to a child's organs. Small parts such as eyes could easily detach posing a serious choking hazard for small children. Beware of putting your child at risk by buying cheap unsafe fakes." Dudley Council's Trading Standards team seized 100 of the dolls in recent weeks. Many of the fake dolls showed visible defects - including poor stitching and fragile limbs that easily detach - which could present a choking hazard, parents were warned. Councillor Phil Atkins, the council's cabinet member responsible for trading standards and environmental health, said: 'The safety of our children must always come first. We are issuing this important warning to consumers, especially parents, to remain vigilant when purchasing these highly sought-after collectables and to report any concerns to us. Trading Standards teams have seized thousands of unsafe counterfeit Labubu dolls 'These copycat toys are often cheaper and might seem like a bargain compared to the genuine versions, but they can be dangerous if they have not been manufactured in accordance with stringent toy safety legislation. Our Trading Standards officers are constantly on the lookout for products which contravene safety legislation and will continue their diligent work to ensure counterfeit and unsafe products are removed from the borough.' When buying any toy, consumers and businesses are urged to check for CE or UKCA marks, UK supplier details, and clear usage instructions on packaging. They should also be wary of unusually low prices, look out for spelling mistakes or poor-quality labelling and always buy from reputable sellers. Chartered Trading Standards Institute has advised parents to inspect packaging carefully, checking for a UKCA or CE mark, and make sure the product lists a UK-based importer or manufacturer. Buyers have also been asked to look for authenticity markers – genuine Pop Mart Labubu dolls feature a holographic sticker, a scannable QR code linking to the official Pop Mart website, and (on newer editions) a UV stamp on one foot. Overly vibrant colours, poor stitching, or the wrong number of teeth (authentic Labubus have nine) are signs of a fake too, experts said. Shoppers have been warned to be cautious of 'bargains' and only buy from reputable retailers, avoiding unfamiliar online vendors or third-party sellers on online marketplaces listings.
