El Santo is Showing Cairo Why Mexico is the Saint of Summer Flavours
As the weather heats up, so do our cravings, and there's something about the zesty, spicy lure of Mexican flavours that feels just right when summer's on the horizon. Maybe it's the heat meeting heat: the citrusy bite of lime, the smokiness of paprika and chipotle, the unapologetic punch of spice. And when those bold flavours are enjoyed al fresco, the experience just hits different. Enter El Santo: Sheik Zayed's newest Mexican eatery on a mission to bring this perfect combination to Cairo's food scene.
When it comes to execution, Mexican food is not for the faint of heart. Sparse seasoning, underwhelming lime, and a criminal lack of coriander are all-too-familiar offenses. Mohammed Omar, co-founder of El Santo, was all too familiar with these pitfalls - especially with how underrepresented Mexican cuisine is in Egypt. 'We recognised a huge gap in the market when it came to genuine, quality Mexican food. It seemed like one of the most misunderstood cuisines in Cairo, so we set out to change that,' Omar tells SceneEats. Omar, a former air traffic controller, has always worn the title of foodie with pride. For years, he toyed with the idea of flipping the script: from food enthusiast to food entrepreneur. Eventually, craving more than just a good meal, he decided it was time to make the leap.
His first call? Mohammed Oli'c, a half-Egyptian, half-Swedish chef with formal training from Switzerland's esteemed Culinary Arts Academy. 'It was Oli'c who floated the idea of going with Mexican cuisine,' Omar recalls. 'He'd spent time in Mexico, learned the craft firsthand, and knew how to do it right.' With Oli'c's expertise and vision in tow, the team took the idea and ran with it.
'El Santo is a famous Mexican fighter. We chose the name because it reflects the fire, passion, and boldness we wanted to bring to the menu,' Omar explains. 'El Santo, meaning 'The Saint', is a nod to tradition, to bold icons, and to our ambition to become a go-to spot for classic and confidently executed Mexican food'. El Santo is a food truck tucked away in The Isle in Sheik Zayed, and it's not trying to scream for attention. Instead, it channels a sort of if you know, you know energy, which was completely deliberate. 'We wanted to create a simplistic space where the food speaks for itself,' Omar says. 'The outdoor space is simplistic, breezy and vibrant, reminding customers that at the end of the day you're here for a good time and a good birra taco.'
The menu reads like a passionate and fiery love letter to bold flavour, with a focus on perfecting Mexican classics. You'll find the usual suspects, tacos, burritos, quesadillas, chips and dips, but all made with organic, fresh ingredients. 'We find our confidence and passion in the simplicity: sharp lime, crisp slaw, tender meats, and sauces that bring actual fire rather than empty promises', says Omar.
So if you ever feel like you're up to grappling with some unapologetically Mexican flavours, El Santo is there to bring the heat.

Beloved Mexican Beer Sol Has Finally Arrived in Egypt

Sol, the crisp century-old Mexico City lager, is debuting in Egypt. The name, which translates to "the sun," is a nod to this light, easygoing spirit. Jul 21, 2025 Egypt's beer shelves are getting a new addition this summer as Mexican lager SOL officially enters the market. First brewed near Mexico City in 1899, the golden lager is now available in Egypt for the first time, offering a crisp profile and easy-drinking appeal that stands out from the usual lineup. The beer's name—Spanish for 'the sun'—is tied to its origins in a brewery where sunlight once streamed through the roof. With a lower alcohol by volume and a light taste profile, SOL is positioned for casual, laid-back settings. With over a century of brewing history and a name that evokes warmth and brightness, SOL brings a refreshing hint of Mexico to Egyptian fridges.

This Tiny Downtown Cairo Restaurant Feeds You Like Family

At Tabkha, you can walk in after a long day and ask "What's for lunch today?" - just like you would your mum. Jul 19, 2025 A flimsy, above-sink drying rack, mismatched plates and a daily menu scribbled on a blackboard menu - everything about Tabkha, the downtown restaurant specialising in Egyptian cuisine, makes it feel like a homey mum's kitchen. But perhaps what makes it more so than anything else is the spirit of the restaurant owner and chef, Hakeem Shamy. To Hakeem, Tabkha is more of an open kitchen, as in open to customers coming in, picking up a ladle, and cooking alongside him, than a mere restaurant. The man loves to cook, and he wanted to make the culture of communal home cooking public, open to all. 'Any of my friends can come, stand with me in the kitchen, and help me cook,' Hakeem tells Scene Eats. For expats, and people looking for a home away from home, Tabkha is a sanctuary – a place where you can walk in after a long day, ask, 'What's for lunch today?', and enjoy a warm meal made with love.
