Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma should keep playing ODIs to guide juniors: Suresh Raina

India Today10 hours ago
Former India cricketer Suresh Raina believes that having both Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma in the Indian ODI side remains crucial, as their vast experience can guide the next generation of players to eventually take up the leadership mantle. The future of both stalwarts remains uncertain. Since retiring from Test cricket earlier this year and guiding India to a Champions Trophy victory in March, neither Kohli nor Rohit has played an international match.advertisementRaina, however, feels their presence in the ODI setup could be invaluable.
"Rohit and Virat's experience is very important It's crucial for the seniors to stay involved with the juniors. Shubman (Gill) has done really well, but he needs players like Virat and Rohit," Raina told Telecom Asia Sport."They have won the Champions Trophy, they have won the World Cups. Virat won the last IPL also. For the astute leadership they have shown during their respective careers, they need to be part of the dressing room," he added. With the Asia Cup approaching in the T20I format, there is speculation that both senior stars could make their return to international cricket during the tour of Australia later this year, which includes three ODIs.MOHAMMED SIRAJ — INDIA'S ALL-FORMAT STARRaina also heaped praise on Mohammed Siraj for his impressive performances in the recent Test series against England. The former India batter believes the Hyderabad pacer has earned his place across all formats."Siraj should be part of the Indian set-up in all three formats, given how he has performed for the country with both the white ball and red ball. He bowled 187 overs in the series and came through without any niggle," Raina said.Siraj's ability to deliver in high-pressure situations and maintain consistency across formats has made him one of India's most dependable bowlers. His inclusion in all formats, Raina argues, will give the team balance and depth in the pace attack. As India looks to manage the transition between generations, the blend of experienced leaders like Rohit and Virat alongside rising stars such as Gill and Siraj could be key to maintaining the team's success in the years ahead.- EndsMust Watch

"MS Dhoni Dropped Me...": Ex-India Star, With Over 17000 International Runs, Once Considered Early ODI Retirement

Former India opener Virender Sehwag has opened up on the moment when he considered retiring early from one-day internationals (ODIs). The fearless opener of his time revealed that he was dropped from the team under MS Dhoni 's captaincy in 2007-08 ODI tri-series between India, Australia and Sri Lanka and this is when he contemplated calling time on his career in the format. Sehwag added that Sachin Tendulkar 's advice helped him reinstate the belief and later shine for India again. "In 2007-08 series when we were in Australia, I played the first three matches of the Commonwealth Bank Series and then MS Dhoni dropped me from the side. I wasn't picked for a while after that. Then I felt that if I can't be a part of the playing XI, then there was no point in my playing ODI cricket," said Sehwag on Padamjeet Sehrawat 's YouTube channel. "Then I went to Tendulkar and said, 'I am thinking of retiring from ODIs'. He said, 'No, I went through a similar phase in 1999-2000, where I felt I should leave cricket. But that phase came and went. So, you are going through a trough, but it will pass. Don't make any decision when you are emotional. Give yourself some time and 1-2 series, and then take a call.' When that series ended, I played in the next series and made a lot of runs. I played the 2011 World Cup and we won the World Cup as well". Sehwag made his ODI debut against arch-rivals Pakistan in 1999 and played his first Test against South Africa in 2001. He is the only Indian batter to have scored two triple centuries in Test cricket. The right-handed batter also has a double century to his name in the ODI format. He scored 219 runs against the West Indies in 2011. Sehwag represented the country in 104 Tests, scoring 8586 runs at an average of 49.34. He hit 23 centuries and 32 half-centuries in the longest format of the game. Sehwag was also adjudged ICC Test player of the year in 2010 as he scored 1282 runs in 10 Test matches, including six centuries. In 251 ODIs, Sehwag scored 8273 runs at a strike-rate of over 104. The former opener smashed 15 hundreds and 38 half-centuries. Sehwag was also part of 2007 World T20 and 2011 World Cup winning teams.

Ishant Sharma unveils hidden truth about his own role in Jasprit Bumrah's debut: 'Uss time vo properly bhaagta tha'

Jasprit Bumrah stands today as the undisputed spearhead of India's pace attack. He's a bowler feared across formats, capable of dismantling batting line-ups in any corner of the world. His awkward, whip-like action and pinpoint precision have made him a nightmare for opponents and a priceless weapon for the national side. While his unique style has also invited injury concerns and constant workload monitoring, a fully fit Bumrah remains India's most reliable match-winner. Jasprit Bumrah (L) training with Ishant Sharma (c) and Hardik Pandya(PTI) Bumrah's journey in international cricket began with his ODI debut against Australia in January 2016, and from there, he became a permanent fixture across all formats. But according to long-time pace partner Ishant Sharma, there's a lesser-known twist to the story of Bumrah's rise. In a chat with former cricketer Padamjeet Sehrawat on YouTube, Ishant recalled a moment from the 2015 Vijay Hazare Trophy final: a spell from Bumrah that left such an impression, it may have quietly accelerated his entry into the Indian team. Ishant was part of Delhi's team in the final against Gujarat, where Bumrah picked a five-wicket haul in his side's massive 139-run win to clinch the title. Ishant revealed that Bumrah, at the time, didn't have the same action as he does today, but was very effective regardless. 'I remember we were playing the List A match, I think it was in 2016 (2015). We were playing the final in Bengaluru, Delhi vs Gujarat. Uss time vo bhaagta tha, properly bhaagte hue bowling karta tha. Abhi jaisa (slow) nahi (At that time, he used to have a proper fast bowler's run-up, not like how he does it today). He picked five wickets in that game,' Ishant said as he narrated the story. 'After that, we went to Australia. I told Ravi bhai, 'If we need anyone in this team, it's Jasprit Bumrah'. I told him about Bumrah's action and his bowling. Ravi bhai was the mentor of the team. And look at his luck... someone got injured, and Bumrah came into the team. From there till now, his mindset and self-belief makes him stand out,' Ishant said. Bumrah's ODI debut Bumrah made his debut after Bhuvneshwar Kumar suffered an injury before the final ODI of the series. He enjoyed an impressive outing in the game, registering figures of 2/40 in 10 overs and helping India clinch a six-wicket win; the side's only win of the five-match series. Bumrah wasn't initially part of the ODI squad, but was drafted in as a late replacement for Bhuvneshwar's injury. Ishant was also part of the playing XI in the ODI.

Shastri said, 'No question, Shubman Gill he'll be around for a long, long time because we've seen what kind of series he's had here. I think he's only 25 years of age, and as you know, with this exposure, he'll get even better.' IND vs ENG: Shubman Gill on Oval thriller, Siraj's spell, and missing Rishabh Pant and Jasprit Bumrah The former India head coach also highlighted Gill's temperament and elegance at the crease. 'He's right up there. He'll be up there. He's composed. He's very regal. He's got that, you know, when you look at him, he's something regal about him. The way he bats, he's very easy on the eye, very fluent and has the ability to play the long innings,' he said on Sky Sports. Gill's series included a historic double century at Edgbaston, where he made 269 in the first innings and followed it with 161 in the second to set up a 336-run win. His combined 430 runs in the match were the second-highest in Test history, and he became the first Indian captain to score a double ton in England. Poll Will Shubman Gill be a key player for India in the future? Definitely Uncertain Not likely He continued to play decisive knocks through the series, including a century in Manchester to secure a draw, guiding a young Indian side to a 2-2 result in his first assignment as Test captain.
