Xiaomi launches its first electric SUV, YU7 in China

Xiaomi EV has officially launched the
Xiaomi YU7
, the company's first sport utility vehicle (SUV) and second
electric vehicle
model following the SU7 sedan. The YU7 is described by the company as a high-performance luxury SUV built from the ground up, rather than an adaptation of its predecessor.
The vehicle derives its name from a Chinese phrase meaning 'riding the wind' and is positioned to target urban buyers seeking spacious interiors, smart features and long driving ranges. The car offers a top speed of 253 km/h and the dual-motor four-wheel drive system enables the SUV to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.23 seconds.
Design and dimensions
The YU7 retains Xiaomi's design language first seen in the SU7 but introduces its own structural identity. The vehicle measures 4,999 mm in length, 1,996 mm in width, and 1,600 mm in height, with a 3,000 mm wheelbase.
Among the structural details are a clamshell aluminium bonnet covering an electric front boot of 141 litres, optional 275 mm wide rear tyres, and a drag coefficient of Cd 0.245 — achieved through design optimisation across 40 airflow zones. Xiaomi claims the YU7 delivers a 59 km range improvement due to aerodynamic enhancements.
Interior and infotainment
The YU7 includes a cabin Xiaomi refers to as a 'dual-zone surround' design. It introduces the Xiaomi HyperVision Panoramic Display, comprising three Mini LED panels integrated into the lower section of the windshield. This setup offers a 1.1-metre wide display with a peak brightness of 1,200 nits.
Other interior features include dual zero-gravity front seats with massage functions and power-adjustable rear seats. All seats are upholstered in Nappa leather, and the materials in high-contact areas meet OEKO-TEX Class 1 standards, which are certified for safety even for infants.
Storage includes a 678-litre rear boot space, expandable to 1,758 litres with the seats folded, and a 141-litre front boot. Additional storage compartments add up to 71 litres.
Powertrain and range
The YU7 comes in three versions: Standard, Pro, and Max. The entry-level variant is fitted with a 96.3 kWh battery offering a certified CLTC range of 835 km, reportedly the longest range for an SUV with a battery of this size.
The Pro version also uses the 96.3 kWh battery and delivers a range of 760 km, while the Max variant features a 101.7 kWh battery and achieves 770 km. All three versions are built on an 800V silicon carbide high-voltage platform.
Chassis and braking
The YU7 includes a double wishbone front and five-link rear independent suspension system, as well as closed dual-chamber air springs with five levels of height adjustment. The SUV has a minimum turning radius of 5.7 metres. Braking performance from 100 km/h to a full stop is 33.9 metres, and the braking system includes Brembo four-piston calipers.
The chassis is supported by continuous damping control and Xiaomi's smart chassis management, designed to adjust suspension and ride stiffness based on road conditions.
'Xiaomi YU7 is not simply a taller version of the SU7,' the company said in a media release. 'It represents a completely reimagined SUV from the ground up, delivering an entirely refreshed experience in design, cabin comfort, safety, and smart capabilities.'

A professor of supply chain management at Rutgers Business School, Arash Azadegan said, 'It doesn't really fit anywhere else without a lot of expensive tweaking,' as quoted in the report. While, the tweaking would involve additional costs for the AI chipmaker, as these chips may 'not meet the performance needs of customers in other regions' or may be engineered 'specific to Chinese customer requests or requirements,' according to Chad Autry, a University of Tennessee supply chain professor, reported Fortune.
