Former European champions SV Hamburg avoided one of the biggest shocks in German Cup history when they scored at the death en route to a 2-1 comeback victory in extra-time at fifth division FK Pirmasens on Saturday.
The other Hamburg Bundesliga club, St Pauli, even needed penalties in their home stadium to hold off neighbouring fourth-tier side Eintracht Norderstedt 3-2 after a 0-0 deadlock
over 120 minutes of the first-round tie.
Yannick Griess, who has been a Hamburg fan for life and is a club member, poked underdogs Pirmasens ahead in the 53nd minute. Dennis Krob almost got a second, with Miro Muheim clearing his effort off the goalline.
But Guilherme Ramos headed Hamburg level two minutes into stoppage time, after coming on in the 86th.
Ransford Königsdörffer then won it for the Bundesliga club in the 100th minute by heading Muheim's free-kick into the roof of the net.

Ex-Liverpool star Luis Diaz scores, wins title on Bayern Munich debut

Luis Diaz, making his Bayern Munich debut, and Harry Kane scored for the reigning Bundesliga champions in a 2-1 away victory against Stuttgart in the German Supercup. The match, which opens the German season with the league and cup winners facing off, was held for the first time since it was renamed for football legend Franz Beckenbauer, who died in 2024. A year into their attacking partnership, Michael Olise and Kane were again Bayern's most dangerous pairing, combining for the opener with 18 minutes played. Off balance and falling, Kane collected Olise's pass and hit a low shot across the grass and into the bottom corner for his 86th goal in his 97th Bayern appearance. Pushed on by a 60,000-strong home crowd, Stuttgart went looking for an equaliser late in the second half, but Bayern broke through on the counter, with Diaz heading in from close range in the 77th minute. Diaz – who joined Bayern from Liverpool last month and remains the club's biggest deal of the offseason – ran to the corner post and sat on the grass, mimicking former Liverpool teammate Diogo Jota's video-game celebration. It was the latest tribute for Portugal winger Jota, who died in a car accident in July. Stuttgart pulled a goal back through Jamie Leweling in stoppage time. The win netted Kane a second team trophy of his career after the 32-year-old broke his duck to win the Bundesliga last season. Praising his charges for a 'deserved win', Bayern captain Joshua Kimmich said the victory would set the tone for the season. 'We wanted to show everyone that we're here. Wins and titles are not a given – we have to appreciate them,' Kimmich told Germany's Sat 1 network. Bayern open the Bundesliga season on Friday at home against Leipzig, while Stuttgart face Union Berlin in the German capital a day later.

Bayern beat Stuttgart thanks to Kane and Luis Diaz

Stuttgart: Harry Kane (in pic right) started the season with a predictable goal and Luis Díaz struck on debut as Bayern Munich beat VFB Stuttgart 2-1 to win the German Super Cup on Saturday. It was an eighth victory for the Bavarians since the 2010 revival of the season curtain-raiser, which has been renamed the Franz Beckenbauer Super Cup in honour of the Bayern icon who died last year. Kane pounced from the edge of the area after Luca Jaquez failed to properly cut out a through-ball on 18 minutes. New winger Luis Díaz made the game safe in the second half before Jamie Leweling's late consolation. Stuttgart striker Nick Woltemade, a target of Bundesliga champions Bayern, was denied superbly by Manuel Neuer from close range at 1-0 - although a goal may have been chalked off for an earlier offside. Cup winners Stuttgart have said the Germany striker is staying at the club and Bayern have hinted he is too expensive to recruit at this juncture. That is despite Bayern looking short of numbers up top following the exits of Thomas Müller, Mathys Tel, Leroy Sane and Kingsley Coman as well as the long-term injury to Jamal Musiala. Luis Díaz has been recruited from Liverpool and the Colombia winger had a mixed display, with Serge Gnabry impressing having been linked with a move away. The pair combined as the new man headed in on 77 - moments before Gnabry limped off. (DPA)
