Fatal hit-and-run leaves man dead in Linden

Fatal hit-and-run leaves man dead in Linden

The Citizen2 days ago
A case of culpable homicide will be opened at the Linden SAPS following a fatal hit-and-run in Linden on the evening of July 17 at the corner of 1st Avenue and 8th Street.
When JMPD officers arrived at the scene, they found an unknown pedestrian who had sustained fatal injuries. 'The body was subsequently removed and transported to the Hillbrow Mortuary,' said JMPD superintendent Xolani Fihla.

He explained that, based on the preliminary investigation, JMPD can attest that this was a hit-and-run incident. 'An unknown vehicle, travelling from south to north along 1st Avenue, drove over the pedestrian, and failed to stop at the scene.'
The victim, a male, was carrying no form of identification with him. Fihla said that, at this time, it is unknown if the victim was a displaced person. 'This will likely be determined as part of the ongoing investigation and identification process.'
Hit-and-run incidents present several significant challenges for JMPD. Fihla highlighted them as being:
Without the vehicle or driver present, identifying the perpetrator becomes much more difficult.
Witnesses may not have seen critical details, or there may be no witnesses at all.
Evidence left at the scene, such as vehicle debris or tire marks, can be minimal or degraded.
This often requires extensive investigation by the police, including reviewing CCTV footage, public appeals, and following up on anonymous tips.
Determining if the driver was aware they had struck someone can be complex.
Due to the victim not having any identification, their family has not yet been notified. This is an ongoing investigation, and more information will be provided as it becomes available.

Cape Town's smash-and-grab hotspots: Where to look out for

New data from Cape Town's Metro Police CCTV network shows a clear pattern in where and when smash-and-grab criminals strike, and the numbers are rising. According to the City of Cape Town, between July 2024 and May 2025, 215 smash-and-grab incidents were recorded via the City's CCTV system. While exact numbers are likely higher, many incidents go unreported or occur outside the network's coverage, the available data points to a few areas that consistently emerge as danger zones. The most dangerous stretch, according to the data, is the corridor between Bonteheuwel and Langa, a long-time hotspot. But recent months have seen a shift. As law enforcement pressure grows in certain zones, criminals are relocating, and other intersections and suburbs are becoming increasingly active. Here are the other major hotspots in Cape Town based on incident data and reports to the Public Emergency Communication Centre: Leonsdale Beaconvale Foreshore Elsies River Industria Epping Industria Milnerton Philippi Many of these locations are clustered in the same general zones, making targeted enforcement more effective, but also more challenging as criminals adapt. The timing of these crimes isn't random. Most incidents happen during late afternoons and early evenings, especially over weekends. According to Alderman JP Smith, the City of Cape Town's Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, this is when motorists are tired, distracted, or relaxed, and valuables are often visible on seats after shopping trips or errands. 'These opportunistic criminals strike when people are perhaps less vigilant after a long day at work or stuck in peak-hour traffic,' Alderman Smith noted. The City also provided some tips to reduce the risk of a smash-and-grab incident. These include: Keeping valuables out of sight and not on seats inside the vehicle – putting them in the boot or underneath the seat, making sure it's not visible Locking all doors and closing windows Being cautious, vigilant, and aware of your surroundings Being wary of people loitering about at traffic lights or intersections Being aware of people attempting to give you pamphlets or sell you goods, as not all are legitimate vendors. JMPD officers arrested for extortion and corruption

JMPD received a distress call from a concerned citizen who reported being extorted by officers. Two Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) officers have been arrested on charges of extortion and corruption. The arrests on Saturday followed a swift probe initiated by a public complaint. JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla said they received a distress call on Saturday from a concerned citizen who reported being extorted by officers. Arrest Fihla said the operation involved a coordinated effort from the JMPD's Internal Affairs Unit, which effected the arrests. 'The complainant alleged that officers demanded R8 000 after accusing their company driver of fleeing an accident scene. Acting on the provided vehicle registration, JMPD Internal Affairs quickly tracked the vehicle to a BP Garage in Parktown, where three officers were located. A search of the officers and their vehicle uncovered R5,340 from two male officers, much of which could not be accounted for and was suspected to be illicitly obtained. Some of the money was found concealed within the vehicle. The two male officers were immediately detained at Jeppe SAPS on charges of extortion and corruption,' Fihla said. We urge the public to continue reporting any suspicious activities, as their vigilance is crucial in helping us maintain a trustworthy police service.' The JMPD has urged the public to report any corruption and unethical behaviour within the department by calling the JMPD Anti-fraud and Corruption Hotline: 0800 203 712 (Toll-free), or in person by visiting the JMPD Internal Affairs Directorate at Wemmer Complex No. 22, Loveday Street, Selby, Johannesburg. 'The JMPD is committed to upholding the highest standards of integrity and accountability within its ranks. We want to assure the public that we are taking decisive action against any form of corruption,' it said. NOW READ: Police probe triple murder and attempted double murder in Gugulethu
