Edinburgh EasyJet flight makes emergency landing in Bulgaria after passengers report 'smell'

Daily Record23-07-2025
Passengers onboard the flight were travelling from Turkey to Edinburgh when they were forced to land.
An Edinburgh-bound easyJet flight was forced to make an emergency landing at a Bulgarian airport after technical difficulties, with passengers reporting a 'disgusting smell'.

At around 9.55pm UK time last night, easyJet flight EZY3282 from Dalaman, Turkey, to the Scottish capital took off and was due to arrive at around 12.45am on Wednesday morning.

However, the aircraft was forced to make a U-turn over Serbia and land in Sofia, Bulgaria, roughly two hours into the journey following a reported technical issue.

EasyJet confirmed that the plane is due to complete the remainder of the journey later today.
Karen was a passenger on the flight after having been on a week-long holiday with her 71-year-old mother and 10-year-old niece in Turkey.

The 42-year-old from Drumchapel in Glasgow claimed that the plane was diverted due to a "disgusting" smell.
She said: "Two hours into our flight, everybody started smelling this horrible smell. It smelled of a dirty nappy. It was disgusting.
"It clearly went all the way through to the cockpit because the pilot got on the tannoy and spoke to the whole plane.

"He told us that he had never smelled anything like this in all his years as a pilot and we would have to divert to Bulgaria so it could be investigated."
EasyJet have claimed that they passengers, who required it, were provided accommodation and meals.

A spokesperson from the company said: 'Flight EZY3282 from Dalaman to Edinburgh diverted to Sofia due to a technical issue and as a precaution.
'The aircraft landed safely in Sofia and we did all we could to minimise the impact of the disruption, providing hotel accommodation and meals for those who required them.
'The safety of our customers and crew is easyJet's highest priority we would like to apologise to customers for the inconvenience caused.'

EasyJet were asked if the technical issue were plumbing issues, but no guidance was provided.
Earlier this month, in a separate incident, we reported that a man had been arrested and charged after a "disturbance" on board an eastJet flight to Glasgow.

Police were alerted to the mid-air incident on a flight from London Stansted to Glasgow Airport at 8.35pm on Thursday, July 10. Cops were called to the airport after the airline raised concerns over a disruptive passenger onboard.
Moments after the flight touched down in Scotland, cops boarded the aircraft and arrested and charged a 34-year-old man in connection. He appeared at Paisley Sheriff Court the following day.
In court, he was named as Craig Brolley, from Glasgow. He was charged with three counts of assault, one count of assault to injury and behaving in a threatening and abusive manner.
Brolley was also charged with endangering the safety of an aircraft, acting in a disruptive behaviour and being drunk on an aircraft. He made no plea and the case was committed for further examination.
Brolley was granted bail with his next appearance in court to be confirmed.

Ryanair sets monthly passenger record despite air traffic control strikes

The Dublin-based carrier announced 20.7 million passengers travelled on its flights in July. That is up 3% from 20.2 million during the same month last year. Its load factor – which represents the average proportion of seat filled on its aircraft – was stable at 96%. Ryanair said it operated more than 113,000 flights in July and cancelled 680, mainly because of French controller strikes. French ATC staff took industrial action on July 3 and 4 in a dispute over working conditions. As well as disrupting flights to and from French airports, the walkouts affected flights scheduled to travel over French airspace. This meant many services to or from UK airports were delayed or cancelled. EasyJet chief executive Kenton Jarvis previously described the French strikes as 'very, very disruptive' as they forced the airline to cancel 660 flights and cost it £15 million. Around 70% of easyJet's flights either fly to or from a French airport, or over the country's airspace. European air traffic management body Eurocontrol estimated the strikes affected more than one million passengers. Meanwhile, a radar fault suffered by UK ATC provider Nats led to more than 100 UK flights being cancelled on July 30.

British teenager boards flight to Italy without a ticket after losing parents in airport

A British teenager boarded the wrong flight home after being separated from his family at Menorca Airport, Spain and ended up in Italy instead of London yesterday. The 15-year-old's parents lost sight of him and raised the alarm before discovering he had successfully boarded a flight to Milan Malpensa without a ticket after police reviewed CCTV. The boy and his family were meant to fly back from their holiday from the Spanish Balearic Island Menorca with Tui to London Stansted. Local authorities and easyJet staff met the teenager upon arriving in Milan and arranged his mother to fly out to meet him. They have now returned to the UK. A national police spokesperson in Mallorca said: 'Officers checked cameras in the departures area and saw the teenager had managed to get on to a flight to Milan. 'The airport had already activated its missing child alert system but it was deactivated after it was confirmed the lad was on his way to Italy.' An easyJet spokesperson told The Independent:'We have been investigating with the airport and our ground handling provider at Mahon how a young passenger was able to travel unaccompanied on the wrong flight to Milan on 4 August. 'The passenger was met by our team and the local authorities in Milan. We provided travel arrangements for a family member to meet them later that day and remained in touch with the family to offer our support.
