Sunjay Kapur dies of heart attack at 53: Can a bee sting cause heart attack? Experts answer

Hindustan Times3 days ago

On a day when India grappled with the loss of over 200 lives in a tragic airplane crash in Ahmedabad, came another shocker: industrialist Sunjay Kapur died of a heart attack in the midst of a polo match in England. But here's a startling detail. He swallowed a bee, according to a media report. Now curious minds are asking if and how bees can cause heart attacks.
Sunjay Kapur, former husband of actor Karisma Kapoor, led automotive technology firm Sona Comstar. The company said in its statement: "It is with profound sorrow that we announce the untimely passing of Sunjay J Kapur Chairman and Non-Executive Director of Sona Comstar, following a sudden heart attack in England, UK, on 12th June 2025, at the age of 53."
The buzz around the bee narrative around Sunjay Kapur's cause of death spread after news agency ANI cited business consultant Suhel Seth as saying, "Sunjay died of a heart attack, apparently after swallowing a bee during a polo match in England". HT has not been able to independently verify this claim. However, social media is abuzz with questions about the possibility of a bee sting leading to a heart attack.
"While a bee sting typically does not directly cause a heart attack, it can trigger severe allergic reactions, such as anaphylaxis, especially if the sting occurs in sensitive areas like the throat," Dr Swarup Swaraj Pal, Senior Consultant - Cardiovascular and Thoracic surgeon, Gleneagles Hospitals, tells HT Health Shots.
What is anaphylaxis? In layman terms, it is a likely life-threatening reaction to an allergen. If it is not treated with urgency, it can turn fatal. "This reaction happens when an over-release of chemicals puts the person into shock. Allergies to food, insect stings, medications and latex are most frequently associated with anaphylaxis," cites the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology.
According to Dr Pal, anaphylaxis can lead to symptoms like difficulty breathing, rapid heart rate, and low blood pressure, which may stress the heart and potentially contribute to a cardiac event in predisposed individuals. "However, the direct relationship between a bee sting in the throat and a heart attack remains complex and varies by individual health conditions."
On X, Dr Deepak Krishnamurthy, a senior cardiologist at KIMS Hospital in Bengaluru, cited Sunjay Kapur's death as a rare case of Kounis Syndrome - an acute coronary syndrome (ACS) triggered by an allergic reaction.
"It is a severe allergic reaction leading to heart attack. Sunjay Kapur (reportedly) had a bee sting inside his throat when he swallowed it during a game of Polo, probably leading to myocardial infarction and cardiac arrest," Dr Krishnamurthy wrote.
Asked by a social media user if this could happen even if a bee stings the outer part of the neck, the expert wrote, 'Not all bee stings lead to anaphylaxis. Only some people have a tendency. If someone has a tendency to develop anaphylaxis, it doesn't matter where on the body the bite happens.'
One would think that a bee sting would typically just cause temporary pain, swelling and itching. But to know that it could even cause death in certain cases, has been a revelation to many people in the wake of Sunjay Kapur's sudden death.
As per Clinical Case Reports Journal, the way bee venom may affect people can depend on the location and number of bee stings. If a person comes with a history of allergic reactions, a bee sting may spike the risk of serious life‐threatening side effects. The Journal further notes that Hymenoptera insects such as honey bees, wasps, ants, and hornets, are commonly involved in accidental stings of human beings globally.
Dr Pal says, "A bee sting can cause various body reactions, ranging from mild localised pain and swelling to more severe systemic reactions. Mild reactions often include redness and itching at the sting site, while moderate reactions may involve hives and swelling beyond the sting area. The most severe reactions are anaphylactic shock, characterized by difficulty breathing, swelling of the throat, rapid heart rate, and a significant drop in blood pressure, which can be life-threatening without prompt medical intervention."
Resuscitation and hydration with vascular expansion solutions are mostly the initial steps of treatment for anyone who visits an emergency hospital room following a bee sting, notes Clinical Case Reports Journal. Morphine and acetaminophen are then used to control pain, while antihistamines and corticosteroids in high doses are used to prevent anaphylaxis.

Bee sting led to Karisma Kapoor's ex-husband Sunjay Kapur's death? Experts explain the heart attack link

In a shocking turn of events, Indian businessman and Karisma Kapoor 's ex-husband, Sunjay Kapur, passed away a few days ago in England during a polo match. He was in his 50s. According to business consultant Suhel Seth , Sunjay suffered a heart attack after reportedly swallowing a bee during the game. Suhel confirmed to ANI, 'Sunjay died of a heart attack, apparently after swallowing a bee during a polo match in England.' What happens when a Bee stings you? According to a report published in 2017 by the University of Melbourne, bees sting when they feel they're in danger. They have a barbed stinger and a venom sac. When a bee stings, it leaves its stinger behind and pumps venom into the skin. For most people, it causes basic symptoms, a bit of pain, swelling, or itching. But for some, especially those who are allergic, it can lead to a very serious condition called anaphylaxis. This is when the body reacts badly to the venom, sometimes in life-threatening ways. It's not just the venom that's the problem, it's how someone's body responds to it. Swallowing a Bee — How can that be dangerous? Swallowing a bee might sound bizarre, but it's actually something doctors say can happen. Back in 2015, Dr Bobbi Pritt from the Mayo Clinic had explained that while most bugs we accidentally swallow don't do any harm, stinging insects like bees or wasps are a different story. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Mother Set Up A Hidden Camera, Her Husband Was Caught In The Act... Topbunt Undo If they sting you on the inside, like in your throat, it can cause massive swelling. For people with allergies, this is even more dangerous and can cause hives, facial and throat swelling, breathing difficulty, and even sudden cardiac arrest if not treated promptly. Can a Bee sting really trigger a heart attack? Experts say that if someone is stung in the throat or inside the mouth and is allergic, it can lead to their airway swelling up. If they can't breathe properly, their heart can go into shock and even stop. Dr Suma Malini Victor in an interview with Khaleej Times, shared that 'Even in those without known allergies, if the bee stings the airway, tongue, or throat, it can cause sudden airway swelling and obstruction.' That's when things can go downhill very quickly, especially without quick medical help. So what should you do if you get stung? According to the University of Melbourne, the key is to act fast. Bees usually leave their stinger behind. You should remove it within 30 seconds to reduce how much venom goes in. Don't pinch it instead, use something like a credit card or your fingernail to scrape it off. If the reaction is mild, a cold pack can help with pain and swelling. But if someone is stung near the throat or starts feeling dizzy, wheezing, or struggling to breathe, they need medical help right away. Who was Sunjay Kapur? Choking Or Polo, What's Behind Sunjay Kapur's Death? Top Cardiologist Explains

Billionaire businessman and Chairman of Sona Comstar, Sunjay Kapur, collapsed during a polo match in England on June 12. The sudden death of Mr Kapur, 53, has sent shockwaves through India's corporate circle and beyond. Early unconfirmed reports speculated that he may have suffered an anaphylactic shock after allegedly swallowing a bee. While playing polo, a bee is said to have flown into Sunjay's mouth and stung him, which triggered a heart attack. He reportedly complained to the umpire that he was choking and may have swallowed something. However, individuals at the match denied such reports and said it was a bee sting. Sources close to the family and eyewitnesses believe the likely cause of the death was a massive heart attack. A final post-mortem, which will provide clarity on the cause of the death, is awaited. NDTV spoke to Dr Naresh Trehan, Chairman and Managing Director at Medanta, to understand the possible causes of death. "It can happen as an anaphylactic reaction to a bee sting, though it is not very common," said Dr Trehan. "The question mark will remain whether the bee got into his mouth, which caused the problem, or he had a heart attack because of choking or a heart attack while playing polo," added Dr Trehan. Cardiologist Dr Trehan reiterated the need for a post-mortem, which will be conducted in London, to get clarity on the cause of death. "There are too many heart attacks occurring in young people. Intense activity like polo can put stress," Dr Trehan said. But can a bee sting cause a heart attack? Speaking to NDTV, Dr Ashish Agrawal, Director of Cardiology at Aakash Healthcare, said that normally, if a bee stings the tongue, it will cause a mild allergic reaction, but in some patients, it could lead to a heart attack. "If the tongue gets stung, the bee's venom immediately dissolves into the blood, and that blood can cause a process which is called an allergic reaction. Now, normally, a patient can have a mild form of allergic reaction, like just mild itching, and that's all," he said. "But in certain individuals, those patients who are predisposed to allergens, they can have a severe form of allergy, which is called anaphylaxis. And this can cause a cardiac arrest," he said. In August 2022, polo player Madhav Buchi Prakash suffered a heart attack while playing polo at a Delhi ground. Mr Kapur is survived by his wife, Priya, and son, Azarius. He had married twice before he met model-turned-entrepreneur Priya. He first married Mumbai-based fashion designer Nandita Mahtani. The two parted their ways in 2000. In 2003, Sunjay married actor Karisma Kapoor. The couple had two children together -- daughter Samaira and son Kiaan -- before parting ways in 2016.
