Trump Signs Executive Order Extending Tariff Truce Deadline With China By 90 Days

The executive order was issued a day after President Trump urged China to significantly increase its purchases of US soybeans. US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order on Monday, extending the tariff truce deadline with China by 90 days, Reuters reported, citing a White House official. The order follows high-level talks between top officials from both countries, who met in Stockholm in July to explore the possibility of shifting the deadline to reach a negotiated agreement on tariffs. A White House official confirmed the latest decision, which came just hours before US tariffs on Chinese goods were due to revert to triple-digit rates. The previously agreed tariff truce between Beijing and Washington was scheduled to expire at 00:01 ET on Tuesday. The executive order, signed on Monday, was issued a day after President Trump urged China to significantly increase its purchases of US soybeans by as much as fourfold. At the same time, Washington has been pressuring Beijing to halt imports of Russian oil, with Trump warning of potential secondary tariffs on Chinese entities found violating the directive. When asked by reporters during a press conference on Monday whether he intended to extend the deadline, Trump responded, 'We'll see what happens. They've been dealing quite nicely. The relationship is very good with President Xi (Jinping) and myself." Without the order being passed, US tariffs on Chinese goods would have surged by 145%, while Chinese tariffs on American goods were set to rise to 125%. At present, imports from China into the US are subject to a 30% tariff, which includes a 10% base rate and an additional 20% imposed in relation to fentanyl-related policy measures. These rates were implemented by Washington earlier this year, between February and March. In response, China currently levies a 10% tariff on goods imported from the US. Both nations have made repeated efforts in recent months to reach a consensus on tariff policy, following the imposition of reciprocal triple-digit tariffs. In May, during a meeting in Geneva, Switzerland, the two sides agreed on a temporary truce, initiating a 90-day period for continued negotiations. They met again in Stockholm, Sweden, in late July, although no official extension was announced at the time. However, both parties described the talks as constructive, signalling the possibility of a truce extension. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. US tariffs on Indian oil imports from Russia a 'big blow' to Moscow: Trump

Agency: Last Updated: August 11, 2025, 22:45 IST Representational image (Image: News18) Washington/New York, Aug 11 (PTI) President Donald Trump on Monday said American tariffs imposed on India for purchasing Russian oil have dealt a 'big blow" to Moscow's economy, which is not doing well, as he referred to New Delhi as Russia's 'largest or second largest oil buyer". Addressing a press conference at the White House, Trump claimed that Russia's economy has been severely disrupted by the ongoing global pressures due to the imposition of US tariffs on several countries. 'I think Russia has to get back into building their country. It's a massive country… They have tremendous potential in Russia to do well. They're not doing well. Their economy is not doing well right now because it's been very well disturbed by this," he said. 'Doesn't help when the President of the United States tells their largest or second-largest oil buyer that we're putting a 50% tariff on you if you buy oil from Russia. That was a big blow," Trump said, in an apparent reference to India. Trump has imposed 25 per cent reciprocal tariffs on India, along with an additional 25 per cent levy on its purchases of Russian oil, resulting in a total of 50 per cent duties. Trump is scheduled to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska on Friday, where he expects 'constructive conversations". 'I thought it was very respectful that the President of Russia is coming to our country, as opposed to us going to his country or even a third-party place. But I think we'll have constructive conversations," he said, adding that he would speak with European leaders after the meeting. Trump also mentioned his plans to engage with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. 'The next meeting will be with Zelenskyy and Putin, or Zelenskyy and Putin and me. I'll be there if they need but I want to have a meeting set up between the two leaders," he said. Trump also claimed that he has solved five wars so far in his second term in the White House and again claimed he stopped the conflict between India and Pakistan. India has been consistently maintaining that the understanding on cessation of hostilities with Pakistan was reached following direct talks between the Directors General of Military Operations (DGMOs) of the two militaries. On relations with China, Trump remarked, 'We've been dealing very nicely with China… They have tremendous tariffs that they're paying to the United States of America. And we'll see what happens. They've been dealing quite nicely. The relationship is very good with President Xi and myself."
