Football business not feasible in Malaysia, says Perak MB

The Star26-05-2025
BATU GAJAH: Football as a business is not feasible in Malaysia, says Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad.
The Perak Mentri Besar said many teams are struggling financially and more will likely end up like Perak FC.
"Only Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) can do it. Teams like Perak, Kedah, Perlis, Pahang and Terengganu are all struggling," he said.
He said this during a press conference after attending the Meet the Customer Day at Dewan Bandaran Kinta on Monday (May 26).
"We cannot copy what is being done in the United Kingdom because it is not just a sport there but a business," he said.
"In Malaysia, we just cannot do it. Like Perak, the team was privatised with hopes that XOX Bhd could develop the sport based on business but it's just not doable," added Saarani.
Saarani was asked to comment on Perak FC's recent decision to officially stop all operations due to financial strains.

JDT coach Munoz orders defence to wake up after Negri scare

PETALING JAYA: Johor Darul Ta'zim coach Xisco Munoz has ordered his defence to tighten up after they survived a good scare against Negri Sembilan before winning 5-3 in their Super League match at the Sultan Ibrahim Stadium on Tuesday. The Southern Tigers had to claw their way back from two goals down, conceded within 12 minutes. Despite JDT managing to draw level before half-time, Spaniard Munoz is not taking the uncharacteristic slip-up lightly. "We were sleeping a little in the early minutes and gave them the space to score from transitions," said Munoz. "We need to be more consistent, stronger in both areas, and prioritise clean sheets. "We are still in the early part of the league, so we need to learn about the different situations that we will be in, at home or away, and in the early minutes, we need to be aggressive," he said. Negri coach Nidzam said his players had shown commitment and quality on the pitch, but their opponents eventually proved too strong for them. "We had to face pressure from a very mature side. They played with quality and discipline," said Nidzam. "We had conceded several goals from set-pieces like corners, which exposed some weaknesses that need to be addressed." He reminded his players to take the positives from the match, as the early season still leaves plenty of opportunities for goals. "It's not easy, but we hope to rectify our weaknesses, especially in terms of our tactics and defensive discipline.'' The teams will now shift their focus to the FA Cup, with JDT playing University Malaya Damansara United on Saturday and Negri taking on Police on Monday.

JDT coach says Negri taught his team a lesson

KUALA LUMPUR: Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) coach Xisco Munoz admitted that his men were taught a lesson by Negri Sembilan despite their 5-3 win in a Super League match on Tuesday. The Deer stunned the Southern Tigers by taking a 2-0 lead through Joseph Esso (eighth minute) and Jovan Motika (15th) at the Sultan Ibrahim Stadium. But JDT turned the tide in the second half with goals from Jon Irazabal (38th and 57th), Joao Figueiredo (41st), Arif Aiman Hanapi (58th) and Bergson Da Silva (90th+2). Negri's Motika scored another goal in the 60th. Former Watford coach Munoz said: "We didn't start well. One of the things is the first 20 minutes. We know our level. "The other day (Charity Shield win over Selangor) was nice because we scored in the first minutes. And today we were a little bit sluggish. "And sure, for today everyone learns. And today was a very good day... They teach us a very good lesson." Negri coach Nidzam Jamil said he was pleased with his men's commitment, but disappointed to lose their Super League opener. "From this game, there are many aspects we need to analyse, such as what we should do when we're in the lead. We were also playing at JDT's stadium, and they dominated the game, so we need to know how to absorb all the pressure."

Negeri Sembilan coach reflects on JDT defeat with optimism

NEGERI SEMBILAN FC head coach Mohd Nidzam Jamil found encouragement in his team's performance despite a 3-5 defeat to Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) in the Super League. He praised his players for their strong commitment during the match at Sultan Ibrahim Stadium. However, he acknowledged JDT's superior strength and tactical discipline as key factors in the loss. 'We faced pressure from a very mature side who played with high quality and discipline,' he said in a post-match press conference. Mohd Nidzam noted that set-piece situations, particularly corner kicks, exposed defensive frailties that need improvement. Despite the result, he urged his team to stay positive and focus on scoring in upcoming fixtures. 'This is not easy, but we hope to take positives and continue rectifying our weaknesses,' he added. He emphasised the need for better tactical awareness and defensive organisation moving forward. Negeri Sembilan will now shift their attention to the FA Cup, leveraging home advantage as a key strength. The coach called for patience and continued support from fans and stakeholders. The match saw Negeri Sembilan take an early lead with goals from Joseph Esso and Jovan Motika. JDT fought back with a goal in the 38th minute before securing a 5-3 victory. - Bernama
