First Rath Yatra in Digha draws lakhs to seaside town

Time of India27-06-2025
Digha: A sea of devotees swamped the road as the wheels of chariots rolled for the maiden Rath Yatra in Digha on Friday. In keeping with the tradition followed for the chariot festival in Puri, chief minister Mamata Banerjee took part in rituals, washed the road where the three chariots were parked, performed aarti with earthen lamps, and swept the path with a gold broom to set off the Rath Yatra from Jagannath Dham.

The rain could not dampen the festive fervour of devotees who started thronging the temple area with umbrellas since 6 am. The priests began the rituals around 9 am and the crowd swelled after 9.30 am, when the chariots decorated with flowers were parked outside the temple.
The security in the precincts of the newly constructed Jagannath temple had been tightened since morning, and cops took a slew of measures to ensure smooth pedestrian traffic on barricaded pavements.
A high alert was issued throughout Digha. Traffic on 116B National Highway leading from Old Digha to the Jagannath temple was shut. Over 20 police camps were set up, with more than 3,000 personnel deployed to implement the security arrangements monitored by senior officers of Kolkata Police, including DG Rajeev Kumar.
Drop gates were also installed on the road leading to the temple.
Around 10 am, the three deities boarded the chariots for the 'Pahandi Vijay' ritual.
Devotional music played on stereo, and a dance performance by around 40 Iskcon devotees, mostly from abroad, entertained the audience.
Around 2 pm, the CM reached the venue along with her cabinet colleagues and state ministers Aroop Biswas, Chandrima Bhattacharya, Sujit Bose, and Indranil Sen. There was a performance by children along with music from Madhab's rock band, after which, flanked by members of Iskcon, the CM set the wheels of the chariots rolling by pulling their ropes individually amid chants of "Jai Jagannath" by thousands of pilgrims, including foreigners.

Radharamn Das, a trustee of Digha Jagannath Dham and vice-president of Iskcon Kolkata, said, "The chariot festival in Digha has been organised following all the rituals of the Puri temple. However, as this is the first time the festival is being held here, the CM was adamant about not compromising on security. Therefore, the general public was not allowed to pull the chariot ropes. Instead, two ropes from the chariot were passed through a barricade, allowing everyone to touch them.
"
"The CM decided every aspect of this year's festival. Accordingly, Balabhadra's chariot was placed first, followed by Subhadra's. Jagannath's chariot brought up the rear," he said.
All devotees and visitors at the temple received prasad on Friday.
The district administration are now preparing for Ulto Rath on July 5. "Although the chief minister may not be present here during the return journey of the chariots, there will be no compromise on security," an official said.

CP Radhakrishnan: Rise of a tested, trusted swayamsevak and BJP's V-P candidate

Born on October 20, 1957, in Tiruppur -- the 'knitwear capital of India' in Tamil Nadu's Kongu belt -- Radhakrishnan was drawn to the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) early. At just 17, he joined the Bharatiya Jan Sangh, the political forerunner to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). A founding foot soldier of the BJP since its inception in 1980, Radhakrishnan has held multiple key roles in the party's Tamil Nadu unit, including State President (2004–07). His 19,000-km, 93-day Rath Yatra across Tamil Nadu during this period spotlighted issues ranging from river-linking and counter-terrorism to social reform and anti-drug campaigns. He later led two more padayatras for separate causes. Radhakrishnan entered Parliament from Coimbatore in 1998 and retained the seat in 1999. He contested the same constituency multiple times, finishing strong even in 2014 — when the BJP went solo, with nearly 3.9 lakh votes. During his time in Parliament, he served as Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Textiles and was a member of panels on PSUs, finance, and the stock exchange scam. Beyond politics, Radhakrishnan holds a BBA and made his mark as an entrepreneur. Between 1985 and 1998, he pioneered the export of 100% cotton knitted fabric to Bangladesh and developed textile links with countries across Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. In administrative roles, he was Chairman of the Coir Board (2016–2020) and later BJP's Kerala in-charge (2020–22). His appointment as Governor of Jharkhand in February 2023 marked a transition from party politics to constitutional office. In his first four months as governor, Radhakrishnan toured all 24 districts. He briefly held additional charges as Governor of Telangana and Lt. Governor of Puducherry. Since July 2024, he has been Governor of Maharashtra. Known for his grassroots connect and political adaptability, Radhakrishnan has maintained cordial relations across party lines including recent gestures such as visiting Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin to inquire about his health. Though he has remained outspoken on national issues, Radhakrishnan ruled out any return to active politics. "An advocate after becoming a judge cannot go back to being an advocate... I don't think about returning to active politics," he said in a recent interview, drawing a parallel with his gubernatorial responsibilities. A tireless campaigner, a disciplined ideologue, and a seasoned parliamentarian, Radhakrishnan's elevation to the Vice-Presidency marks a symbolic coming-of-age for the BJP in Tamil Nadu, a state where the party still seeks a significant electoral breakthrough.

PM Modi to inaugurate 3 Kolkata Metro routes on August 22, CM Mamata Banerjee gets invitation

Union Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has invited West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to the August 22 event where Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to inaugurate three new routes of Kolkata Metro. The invitation notably includes a detailed estimate of ongoing railway projects in the state and and financial approvals. While the simultaneous launch of metro services on the Green Line, Orange Line, and Yellow Line is expected to significantly enhance urban connectivity in Kolkata, the invitation to Banerjee has drawn considerable attention, sparking anticipation about her potential attendance at the event. The new routes include the final section of the East-West Metro (Green Line) from Sealdah to Esplanade, which will complete its vital link. The Orange Line will extend services from Hemanta Mukhopadhyay (Ruby Crossing) to Beleghata, adding four new stations. Concurrently, the Yellow Line will connect Noapara to Jai Hind (Biman Bandar/airport), introducing four new stations and establishing a direct metro link to the airport. Additionally, PM Modi will inaugurate a subway at the Howrah metro station. Vaishnaw, in his invitation, reaffirmed the Centre's dedication to improving train services and infrastructure in West Bengal. He highlighted that projects valued at Rs 83,765 crore were underway in the state, with a record allocation of Rs 13,955 crore in the current budget. Furthermore, 101 stations are being redeveloped, and West Bengal's rail network is already benefiting from nine Vande Bharat and two Amrit Bharat trains, he noted. '2026 election is knocking on the door' However, the invitation led to contrasting reactions. TMC spokesperson Arup Chakraborty criticised the Centre, stating, 'So many metro projects are stuck for lack of budgetary allocations due to the stepmotherly attitude of the central government. There are local trains that never run on time. At least, this time they have invited the CM, because the 2026 election is knocking on the door.' BJP state president Sukanta Majumdar attributed project delays to land-related issues. 'In Bengal, due to land issues, nearly 43 projects are stuck. The project the PM is coming to inaugurate was stuck near Chingrighata for days. Because of non-cooperation by the police and the traffic department, the metro rail is unable to connect it to Sector 5. The invitation to CM is but natural because the BJP doesn't believe in the politics of hatred. It believes in a federal structure, which the TMC lacks. Hence, it is natural for them to react that way.' In preparation for the launch, Sumeet Singhal, Commissioner of Railway Safety, recently conducted a thorough inspection of the Yellow Line stretch from Dum Dum Cantonment to Jai Hind Bimanbandar. The inspection, covering tracks, trains, and emergency features, concluded with him expressing satisfaction with the section's readiness for passenger service. Upon receiving formal sanction, this new service is expected to significantly transform Kolkata's urban transport landscape. This visit marks another significant engagement for Modi in West Bengal, following his July visit to Durgapur, where he inaugurated projects worth over Rs 5,000 crore. All eyes are now on the August 22 event to see if the chief minister attends it.

Will Election Commission conduct Bihar-like SIR in West Bengal? CEC Gyanesh Kumar makes big claim

Home News Will Election Commission conduct Bihar-like SIR in West Bengal? CEC Gyanesh Kumar makes big claim Will Election Commission conduct Bihar-like SIR in West Bengal? CEC Gyanesh Kumar makes big claim Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar has said that SIR in West Bengal will be announced at an appropriate time. Gyanesh Kumar- File image New Delhi: In a significant update amid the ongoing row on Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar, Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar has said that the Election Commission will decide at an appropriate time whether to conduct a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in West Bengal. Notably, the assembly elections of West Bengal are scheduled to be held in 2026. Responding to a question on SIR in a press conference in New Delhi, the CEC said that the decision will be taken collectively by the three commissioners. The remark of the ECI Chief are significant as it comes after the ECI in July published data from the last SIR held in Bengal in 2002, covering 11 districts and 103 assembly constituencies, amid political debate over fresh revisions in Bihar. Notably, Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee has also opposed the SIR in Bihar. What EC said on conducting SIR in West Bengal? 'We three (election) commissioners will decide at an appropriate time and take a decision on when to conduct SIR in West Bengal or other states. It will be announced at an appropriate time', CEC Gyanesh Kumar said while addressing a press conference. Was Bihar SIR carried out in haste? In response to the timing of conducting the SIR in Bihar, Kumar has clarified that it is a myth that SIR has been carried out in haste and emphasised that it is the EC's legal duty to correct the voter list before every election. 'It is a matter of grave concern that some parties and their leaders are spreading misinformation on SIR in Bihar… some political parties are firing from the Election Commission's shoulder. The EC exhorts all political parties to file claims and objections on draft electoral rolls in Bihar … 15 days are still remaining. 'Doors of the Election Commission are open to everyone, and booth-level officers and agents are working together in a transparent manner,' he said.
