The unexpected Ozempic side effect that has men rushing to get their hands on it

Daily Mail12 hours ago
A new study suggests that drugs like Ozempic may do more than lower blood sugar and aid weight loss, they could also raise testosterone levels in men.
Researchers from S. Louis University Hospital found that men taking GLP-1 medications, including semaglutide (Ozempic) and tirzepatide (Mounjaro), saw their testosterone levels increase by 24 percent after 18 months of treatment.
Testosterone is a vital hormone responsible for male sexual development, muscle mass, bone density, red blood cell production, and fat distribution.
Low testosterone is common in men with obesity or Type 2 diabetes and is linked to fatigue, reduced libido, and decreased quality of life.
The new findings suggest that GLP-1 drugs may also improve reproductive health in men affected by these conditions.
Researchers say the results open the door for further investigation into how anti-obesity medications can impact hormone levels and overall well-being.
Lead author Dr Shellsea Portillo Canales, an endocrinology fellow at SSM Health St Louis University Hospital said: 'While it is well known that weight loss from lifestyle changes or bariatric surgery increases testosterone levels, the impact that anti-obesity medications may also have on these levels has not been widely studied.'
'Our study is among the first to provide compelling evidence that low testosterone can be reversed with the use of commonly prescribed anti-obesity medications.'
The researchers analyzed existing medical records of 110 adult men with obesity or Type 2 diabetes.
All of the participants were being treated with semaglutide (Ozempic or Wegovy), dulaglutide (Trulicity) or tirzepatide (Zepbound) for one and a half years.
All three drugs are known to mimic the effects of GLP-1, a natural hormone in the body that regulates blood sugar and appetite, often leading to lower blood sugar and weight loss.
None of the men were on testosterone or hormonal therapy before or during the experiment.
Some risks of testosterone therapy include worsening sleep apnea, acne, enlarging the prostate or breasts, increasing the growth of prostate cancer, reducing sperm counts, causing the testicles to shrink and increasing the risk of clots, according to the Mayo Clinic.
The researchers measured the participants' total and free testosterone levels before and during their treatment.
Results showed that the participants experienced 10 percent of weight loss and saw their testosterone levels rise from 53 percent to 77 percent.
The scientists are yet to discover how GLP-1 drugs can increase testosterone.
However, previous research has shown that excess fat can force the body to convert testosterone into estrogen, a female hormone.
But when obese individuals start to lose weight, they reduce their body fat stores, which can improve insulin sensitivity in the body and reduce overall inflammation.
Both decreased inflammation and weight loss can help the body produce more testosterone and prevent the conversion of the male hormone into estrogen.
Talking about the preliminary results, Dr Portillo Canales said: 'Results from this study show that there is a direct correlation between the use of anti-obesity medications and testosterone levels.
'Doctors and their patients can now consider this class of medications not only for the treatment of obesity and to control blood sugar, but also to benefit men's reproductive health.'
But despite clear results, the study authors noted that further research is needed to establish a clear link between the drugs and an increase in testosterone.
However, seeing how beneficial the discovery is, Dr Fatima Cody Stanford, an obesity medicine physician scientist at Massachusetts General Hospital who was not involved in the study, told NBC News: 'The findings from this study highlight an important intersection between metabolic health and hormonal balance.
'This dual benefit underscores the potential of these medications to enhance overall health outcomes, including reproductive health, in this population.'
Average testosterone levels in men are between 300 to 1,000 nanograms per deciliter.
Testosterone tends to decline gradually with age, starting around the late 30s to early 40s.
By the age of 75, the average male testosterone level drops to about 65 percent of the average level seen in young adults, Dr Portillo Canales said.
The findings were presented today at ENDO 2025, the Endocrine Society's meeting in San Francisco.

I look like I've had Botox but it's just my new diet that cleared my wrinkles in 30 DAYS – I lost a stone & a half too

A WOMAN transformed her skin and banished her wrinkles through a new diet, all whilst dropping a stone and a half. Janis Luize Rocha Leites, 30, had been vegetarian for two years, but says it left her feeling sluggish, spotty, and 'not my best self'. 6 6 The San Diego make-up artist said: 'I wasn't happy with my skin or body. I had no energy.' 'My face would swell up, I had small red dots that looked like blemishes, and my hair was falling out.' Fed up, Janis turned to the extreme carnivore diet, which is a zero-carb lifestyle that consists entirely of animal products. Inspired by a friend whose glowing skin she envied, Janis did a full 30-day cleanse, eating only meat, salt and water. 'I noticed his skin and hair had completely changed,' she said. 'When he told me it was from the carnivore diet, I had to try it.' In just one month, Janis says the changes were dramatic. She was 20 lbs lighter and claims her skin had changed completely. She also felt sharper, saying her brain fog had also cleared up. Janis added: 'My double chin disappeared. My tummy looked lean. My periods became regular.' I've lost 5 stone and learnt the truth about thin privilege and men are nicer to me but a restrictive diet isn't the answer But the biggest shock was that her wrinkles had vanished. She said: It felt like I had got Botox done.' Her face was tighter and smoother but it was all natural. She added: 'It felt like I was biohacking my body.' Janis had also given up alcohol at the time, and believes the diet gave her body a full reset. 'The diet helps you with your cravings - I was a big sweet tooth but not anymore. ' she said. 'I feel like a total new person' After the diet, Janis reported that her periods also stabilised. She also believes the diet helped her fall pregnant in January 2025, although she admits there's no way to know for sure. 'I had said to my boyfriend, 'I'm getting more fertile ', I can't say it was 100% from the diet, but it felt like something in my body had changed.' Now 23 weeks along, Janis has slightly adjusted her diet during pregnancy. She now eats around 300g of meat a day, mainly red meat with some chicken or pork, plus scrambled eggs, bone broth, and the occasional piece of fruit or carbs to support healthy weight gain. 'I still feel amazing,' she said. 'I used to always feel bloated after eating vegetables, even when they were organic. Now, I feel so much lighter and more energised.' And she doesn't plan to stop after the baby arrives. Janis hopes to raise her child on a carnivore-based diet and plans to start them off with nutrient-rich bone broths. 'I've seen people talking about how it means they have no mood swings and sleep all the time', she said. I've lost over 4st on Mounjaro in 6 months but 4 no-go foods cause eggy sulphur burps like you can't imagine & diarrhoea

A MOUNJARO user has revealed the four foods she has to avoid whilst using fat jabs. Savvy mum Vic has been on Mounjaro for just over six months and has lost 4 stone 2 lbs. 5 5 She still has another 3 stone 7 lbs to lose to reach her goal weight, but throughout her weight loss journey has discovered four foods that have had adverse side effects. Not only does her once go-to favourite dinner now give her diarrhoea, but it also causes eggy sulphur burps like you can't imagine. Posting on social media, Vic got candid on the foods she has stopped eating whilst taking Mounjaro, leaving many gobsmacked. Fried food First things first, Vic confirmed that she avoids greasy, fried foods, as they can cause 'unsolicited side effects.' She claimed that digestive systems 'slow down significantly whilst on Mounjaro', and as a result, she tends to avoid takeaways and anything too heavy. Not only this, but she claimed that when she eats fried foods, it 'feels like there's somebody fighting you in your stomach from the inside.' Red meat While steak used to be Vic's 'go-to meal,' now it is a 'no-go' for her. She claimed that red meat, particularly steak, is 'difficult to digest', but with Mounjaro thrown into the mix, has caused her 'a few problems.' Vic acknowledged that after eating steak whilst on the fat jabs, she has experienced 'diarrhoea, major stomach cramps and sulphur burps like you can't imagine.' Dense carbs As well as this, according to Vic, heavy, dense carbs, such as bread, naan bread, chips and jacket potatoes, are no longer in her diet whilst using the fat jabs. She stressed: 'Anything like that causes me havoc the next day - I smell like I've [eaten] six rotten eggs if I have anything heavy and dense in carbs.' Spicy food And it's not only naan bread that Vic can't have when getting a curry, as spicy foods are also a no-no. She once 'loved spicy food' but now claimed: 'Nope, doesn't work now for me - the aftermath is just not worth it.' Since being on Mounjaro, Vic has learnt that keeping her diet 'lean and clean is the only way forward.' As a result, now she focuses on consuming lean protein, vegetables, fiber and plenty of water. Not just foods - f izzy drinks are out too Not only are these four foods out of the question, but there's also drinks that Vic avoids too. I blow up like a pufferfish if I have anything fizzy Vic The once 'Red Bull girl and a Prosecco queen' revealed that fizzy, sugary drinks are also not an option for her. While Vic used to love guzzling fizzy pop, now she 'can't handle' it. Instead, she focuses on drinking three to four litres of water a day, as she added: 'I blow up like a pufferfish if I have anything fizzy.' Mounjaro users react The TikTok clip, which was posted under the username @ rural_vic, has clearly left many open-mouthed, as it has quickly amassed 181,700 views. Not only this, but it's also amassed 2,762 likes, 205 comments and 445 saves. Everything you need to know about fat jabs Weight loss jabs are all the rage as studies and patient stories reveal they help people shed flab at almost unbelievable rates, as well as appearing to reduce the risk of serious diseases. Wegovy – a modified version of type 2 diabetes drug Ozempic – and Mounjaro are the leading weight loss injections used in the UK. Wegovy, real name semaglutide, has been used on the NHS for years while Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is a newer and more powerful addition to the market. Mounjaro accounts for most private prescriptions for weight loss and is set to join Wegovy as an NHS staple this year. How do they work? The jabs work by suppressing your appetite, making you eat less so your body burns fat for energy instead and you lose weight. They do this my mimicking a hormone called GLP-1, which signals to the brain when the stomach is full, so the drugs are officially called GLP-1 receptor agonists. They slow down digestion and increase insulin production, lowering blood sugar, which is why they were first developed to treat type 2 diabetes in which patients' sugar levels are too high. Can I get them? NHS prescriptions of weight loss drugs, mainly Wegovy and an older version called Saxenda (chemical name liraglutide), are controlled through specialist weight loss clinics. Typically a patient will have to have a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or higher, classifying them as medically obese, and also have a weight-related health condition such as high blood pressure. GPs generally do not prescribe the drugs for weight loss. Private prescribers offer the jabs, most commonly Mounjaro, to anyone who is obese (BMI of 30+) or overweight (BMI 25-30) with a weight-related health risk. Private pharmacies have been rapped for handing them out too easily and video calls or face-to-face appointments are now mandatory to check a patient is being truthful about their size and health. Are there any risks? Yes – side effects are common but most are relatively mild. Around half of people taking the drug experience gut issues, including sickness, bloating, acid reflux, constipation and diarrhoea. Dr Sarah Jarvis, GP and clinical consultant at said: 'One of the more uncommon side effects is severe acute pancreatitis, which is extremely painful and happens to one in 500 people.' Other uncommon side effects include altered taste, kidney problems, allergic reactions, gallbladder problems and hypoglycemia. Evidence has so far been inconclusive about whether the injections are damaging to patients' mental health. Figures obtained by The Sun show that, up to January 2025, 85 patient deaths in the UK were suspected to be linked to the medicines. Other Mounjaro users were thankful for Vic's advice and eagerly raced to the comments to express this. One person said: 'Great advice thank you. I am six weeks in and not lost this week so [I'm] not happy, trying to get some tips.' Another added: 'This is spot on advice!! Pork is another difficult food to digest that can be really awful.' A third commented: 'Been on it a year, five stone off and 10.2mg now and totally agree with the fried foods.' Meanwhile, someone else gushed: 'Thank you! You've helped beyond measure!!' 5 5

Firebrand pastor John MacArthur dies at 86

John MacArthur Jr, an influential figure in American evangelicalism, died at 86 on Monday after a series of illnesses. MacArthur led Grace Community Church in California for 56 years, building a vast following through his popular 'Grace to You' radio ministry and authoring hundreds of books and biblical commentaries. Widely recognised for his verse-by-verse preaching style, he was often hailed as 'the world's premier expositor', according to The Roys Report. His death was announced by Phil Johnson, longtime head of MacArthur's media ministry and editor of many of his books. MacArthur had undergone multiple heart and lung surgeries over the years and was hospitalised earlier this month with pneumonia. Revered for his uncompromising, fundamentalist theology and Calvinist doctrine, MacArthur also founded and expanded The Master's University (earlier named Los Angeles Baptist College). His ministry's slogan was 'Unleashing God's Truth, One Verse at a Time'. While deeply influential, MacArthur's legacy is also marked by controversy – including alleged mishandling of abuse cases, misogynistic remarks, plagiarism claims, and clashes with authorities over Covid-19 restrictions. An ardent opponent of feminism, LGBTQ rights, and evolution, he was central to the resurgence of Calvinism in the US, Baptist News Global reported. In his later years, MacArthur became an increasingly vocal figure in America's cultural and political battles. He condemned critical race theory and emerged as a prominent evangelical critic of 'wokeness'. Though Grace Community Church initially closed at the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, it soon defied California 's public health orders by resuming indoor services, prompting a legal standoff that ended with the state and Los Angeles County paying an $800,000 settlement over alleged violations of religious freedom. 'Evangelicalism is a pulpit-driven movement, and John has driven the most influential pulpit in evangelical Christianity for more than a half a century,' R Albert Mohler Jr, the president of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, in Louisville, said in an interview earlier this year, according to The New York Times. MacArthur was the son of Jack MacArthur, an independent fundamental Baptist preacher and radio host known for 'The Voice of Calvary'. Deeply influenced by his father, MacArthur attended Bob Jones College before transferring to Los Angeles Pacific College. He earned a Master of Divinity from the Biblical Institute of Los Angeles (now Biola University and Talbot School of Theology), where he later became a faculty representative. After graduation, he worked with his father's ministries and was ordained by the Independent Fundamental Churches of America. In 1969, Grace Community Church in Sun Valley appointed MacArthur as its youngest and third pastor. Under his leadership, the church expanded rapidly, and his preaching led to the creation of the 'Grace to You' media ministry, which now broadcasts in nine languages on over 2,400 stations. He also led The Master's University and authored the bestselling ' MacArthur Study Bible' – which has reportedly sold more than four million copies. Though he received an honorary doctorate from Biola in 1977, some criticised his use of the 'Doctor' title. Critics also accused MacArthur of oversimplifying scripture, arguing that his insistence on a single, definitive interpretation of even the Bible's most complex passages misled listeners. But to his followers, that was precisely his strength. MacArthur 'inspired thousands of pastors to believe that explaining what the Bible means honours God, saves people and is just plain interesting,' John Piper, a retired pastor and popular theologian in Minnesota who was a longtime friend, told The New York Times. 'To this day, from Dallas to Dubai, young people (especially men) come up to me and say that they listen to John MacArthur.' 'Grace To You' ministry website noted: 'While this is a profound loss, our commitment – our plan – has not changed. As the Lord sustains this work, Grace to You will always and only distribute the Bible teaching of John MacArthur.'
