NEET aspirant girl from J&K hangs self in Kota
Kota: A NEET-UG aspirant from Jammu and Kashmir died by suicide in Kota Sunday evening, marking the 15th student suicide in the coaching hub this year and the second in May. The student, identified as Zeeshan Jahan, 18, was preparing for the
medical entrance exam
through self-study and was residing at a paying guest accommodation under the Mahaveer Nagar police station area.
According to police, Zeeshan allegedly hanged herself from the ceiling fan of her room while speaking on the phone with a relative, Burhan, in Jammu and Kashmir. During the call, she reportedly hinted at her intent to take her life. Alarmed, Burhan immediately disconnected the call and contacted Mamta, a student living on the upper floor of the same building.
Mamta rushed to Zeeshan's room and found it locked from the inside.
She alerted others nearby, and with help from workers at a neighboring construction site, the door was broken open using a grinder. Zeeshan was found hanging and was taken to a hospital, where she was declared brought dead.
Circle inspector of Mahaveer Nagar police station said Zeeshan had previously studied in Kota and returned a month ago to prepare again for NEET-UG, this time without joining any coaching institute.

She had rented a room behind Pratap Chouraha for self-study.
The officer confirmed that no suicide note was recovered from the room and that the reason behind the extreme step is yet to be ascertained. He added that the ceiling fan in the room was not equipped with an anti-hanging device—equipment recommended in hostels and PGs to deter suicides.
The girl's body has been placed in the mortuary, and her family has been informed.
A post-mortem will be conducted after their arrival.
Notably, this marks the 15th case of suicide by a coaching student in Kota this year since January and the second this month. Earlier, this month, another girl from Madhya Pradesh, also a NEET aspirant, committed suicide by hanging herself in her room under Kunhadi police station a day before the NEET-UG exam on May 3.

Nagpur: In a major crackdown on illegal hookah parlours across the city, the city police raided three locations, arrested 36 individuals and seized material worth Rs1.50 lakh under 'Operation Thunder' which continued on Saturday past midnight. CP Ravinder Singal has also issued a 24-hour ultimatum to all illegal hookah parlours, e-cigarette shops and other illicit operations to cease activities immediately or face severe consequences, including long-term closure, sealing of premises, and seizures. How one phone call led cops to man accused in Vaishnavi's death case
1 2 3 Pune: For most of the 10 days that he was absconding from police, Nilesh Chavan, a co-accused in the Vaishnavi Hagawane death case, seemed confident the authorities had no idea where he was. But it was one conversation through his girlfriend's phone that helped police track him to the northern parts of the country and later, into Nepal. He would eventually be placed under arrest in Uttar Pradesh's Maharajganj. "He used his girlfriend's phone to stay in touch with contacts in Pune," said an officer with Pimpri Chinchwad police. "He had taken her along claiming they were going on a vacation, and drove to Delhi," the police officer said. During his time on the run, the officer said Chavan avoided using debit cards, paid only cash and even picked shops that didn't have CCTV. He also kept moving, from one place to another. The police officer, citing interviews with Chavan, said he decided to go on the run soon after Warje police registered a case against him, for allegedly threatening Vaishnavi's father with a gun. The Pimpri Chinchwad police official said Chavan, along with his girlfriend - she has not been named in any FIR or case - first headed to Delhi, where it's believed they stayed for a day or two. "He then sent her back to Pune and proceeded to UP, en route to Nepal. Sometime during this trip, he used his girlfriend's high-end smartphone to video call a contact in Pune. Chavan used an end-to-end encrypted app, thinking the call would not be traced, but we had already put his Pune contact's phone under surveillance," the officer said. In fact, PCMC police's cyber wing was already monitoring calls to Chavan's close friends and relatives. "After that one call he placed to Pune, our cyber cell, led by assistant police inspector Pravin Swami, were alerted and they soon managed to get the IP address of the handset he used. They found that he was on a private bus. The team then managed to get CCTV footage from inside that bus, which confirmed he was on his way to UP from Delhi," the officer said, adding that from UP, Chavan managed to cross into Nepal. "When we discovered that he was in Nepal, Pimpri Chinchwad police commissioner Vinoy Kumar Choubey alerted his counterparts there and they helped us get the phone number of a local cab driver. We studied this driver's call history and the cyber cell zeroed in on one particular number, which Chavan had purchased in Nepal. We had his location," the officer said. Chavan was found staying at a low-budget lodge in Nepal's Bhairahawa (officially, Siddharthanagar), around 200km from capital Kathmandu. "We brought him to Maharajganj in UP where on May 30 (Friday), he was formally placed under arrest. We recovered three mobile handsets from him," the Pimpri Chinchwad police officer said. In the last five months alone, traffic cops across the three commissionerates have issued 30,000 challans based on complaints raised by vigilant residents and collected fines of Rs 1 crore. These 'tip-offs' were posted on the traffic police's social media platforms – X, WhatsApp and Facebook. The commonly reported offences: riding without helmet, jumping signals and wrong parking. There are also cases of triple riding, wrong-side driving, cellphone driving and rash driving. Each of these were accompanied by photos and videos. Some of the complaints brought to the notice of police by residents in the last 48 hours include blocking free left at Tarnaka X roads by a govt vehicle, triple riding without a helmet at Tank Bund, rude behaviour by a driver when questioned about driving on the wrong direction in Trimulgherry, and driving without a helmet while using a cellphone in Miyapur "We have a dedicated team at the commissioner's office that monitors grievances received through social media channels and alerts officials on the ground. Recently, we have noticed a surge in these complaints – especially regarding wrong parking in residential areas," said a traffic cop. Records confirm this spike in citizen complaints. In 2024, traffic police from the three commissionerates issued 50,000 challans (of the total 15 lakh), following public complaints. Cyberabad commissionerate limits alone contributed 44,000 challans. The total challans issued so far this year is around 20 lakh. "Enforcement of traffic management faces limitations as the focus remains on maintaining traffic flow. That makes it challenging to monitor every violation, despite the CCTV coverage. Therefore, citizens' assistance is valuable in penalising offenders," said Rahul Hegde BK, deputy commissioner of police (traffic), Hyderabad commissionerate. He added: "In the last 17 months, we have raised Rs 36 lakh with their help.
