SAN JOSE, Calif. — The brother of late NFL star-turned-soldier Pat Tillman will undergo a mental competency test before his trial on arson and vandalism charges, a judge ordered Wednesday.
Richard Tillman, 44, of San Jose was arrested after he allegedly rammed a car into a post office in a San Jose, California, strip mall around 3 a.m. Sunday, and set it on fire inside the building, which went up in flames, San Jose police said. No injuries were reported.

Aland Etienne, lobby security guard in Park Avenue mass shooting, died trying to stop elevators, NYPD says

NEW YORK — Aland Etienne, the security guard murdered in a mass shooting in the lobby of a Park Avenue skyscraper, spent the final moments of his life trying to save others, NYPD officials revealed Wednesday. Etienne, 46, 'tried to crawl to hit the button to recall the elevators so the elevators wouldn't go to the top floor,' Deputy Mayor Kaz Daughtry said on Fox 5's 'Good Day New York.' But the attempt to stop the elevators was unsuccessful and gunman Shane Tamura made it to the 33rd floor, where shot a woman to death after killing Etienne, a police officer and a woman in the lobby and wounding a survivor. Tamura then shot himself to death on the 33rd floor. As the investigation into Monday evening's mass shooting continues, Daughtry said more stories about the life-and-death drama that unfolded 'will come out.' Etienne's final act of bravery is typical of how he did his job. Manny Pastreich, president of Local 32BJ of the Service Employees International Union, said in a statement that Etienne was 'a dedicated security officer who took his job duties extremely seriously.' 'Every time a security officer puts on their uniform, they put their lives on the line,' Pastreich added. 'Their contributions to our city are essential, though often unappreciated. Aland Etienne is a New York hero. We will remember him as such.' Etienne and his girlfriend had been looking forward to this Saturday, the day their son turns 7. He also left behind five brothers and a sister. One of the brothers, Gathmand Etienne, said in a social media post Tuesday that his family had 'suffered a heartbreaking tragedy.' 'He was more than a brother — he was a father, a son, and a light in our lives,' he wrote. 'Our hearts are shattered, and we're asking for your prayers and strength as we navigate this painful time.' _____

Attempted break-in reported at home of All-Star pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto during Dodgers road trip

Three people attempted to break into the Hollywood Hills home of Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto early Wednesday morning, according to NBC4 Los Angeles. Nothing was stolen, and the intruders never entered the residence, per authorities, according to NBC4, which also reported that the group leapt over the house's back fence at around 5:30 a.m. and broke a rear glass door. Yamamoto is currently with the Dodgers in Cincinnati, where the team is finishing up a three-game series Wednesday. But staff members were home at the time of the commotion and turned on the lights, according to NBC4. Per the station's report, that's when the trio fled, although law enforcement sources told NBC4 that three people were seen on security camera footage. No arrests have been reported, according to NBC4. The attempted break-in took place not even two full days after Yamamoto recorded nine strikeouts in seven innings of a 5-2 road win over the Reds. The 26-year-old became a first-time MLB All-Star this season, his second in the big leagues. Before joining the Dodgers in 2024, he was a five-time All-Star in Nippon Professional Baseball, Japan's top pro league, in which Yamamoto earned three straight Pacific League MVP awards. This season, the right-handed pitcher has posted a 9-7 record and a 2.63 ERA in 21 starts. His 10.289 strikeouts per nine innings are good for ninth most in MLB, per Sports Reference. Break-ins at the homes of professional athletes have been on the rise in recent years. In 2023, the homes of Dodgers third baseman Max Muncy and first baseman Freddie Freeman were burglarized. In December last year, the FBI issued a warning to professional sports leagues, calling attention to the role social media can play in attempted burglaries. The bureau encouraged leagues to advise their athletes to refrain from displaying their valuables on public platforms. Earlier that same month, the home of Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow was burglarized while he was on the road playing the Dallas Cowboys.

Father accused of drowning daughter pleads not guilty in New York court

ELIZABETHTOWN, N.Y. — A man accused of drowning his 9-year-old daughter while vacationing in New York's Adirondack region and hiding her body in the water in the woods pleaded not guilty Wednesday. Luciano Frattolin, 45, set off a frantic search for his daughter, Melina Frattolin, earlier this month by reporting her missing just before they were due back in Montreal. He was arrested after investigators found holes in his story. He was indicted Tuesday on charges of murder and concealing a corpse.
