Chelsea forward Lauren James sidelined with injury sustained at Euro 2025
LONDON (AP) — Chelsea confirmed Lauren James will be sidelined 'for a period of time' because of an injury the forward sustained while helping England win the Women's European Championship last month. The team's announcement Wednesday leaves James in doubt for the Women's Super League season opener against Manchester City on Sept. 5 at Stamford Bridge. The 23-year-old James left the Euro 2025 final against Spain shortly before halftime with a right ankle injury. Chelsea didn't specify a timeline for her return. 'James is now back with Chelsea and will undergo a period of rehabilitation with the club,' the team's announcement said. James battled injuries last season but still helped Chelsea win its sixth straight WSL title en route to a domestic treble. ___ AP soccer:

Rangers manager Bruce Bochy misses game against Royals due to personal matter
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Texas Rangers manager Bruce Bochy will miss Wednesday's game against the Kansas City Royals while tending to a personal matter. Bench coach Luis Urueta will manage the club in Bochy's absence. The Rangers have been one of baseball's biggest disappointments this season. They were expected to bounce back after going from winning the franchise's first World Series championship two years ago in Bochy's return to managing to finishing 78-84 last year. But they were third in the AL West at 62-65 entering Wednesday's game. Though they lead the majors with a 3.46 ERA, their offense ranks among baseball's worst. The 70-year-old Bochy is sixth on baseball's all-time wins list with 2,233 and has four World Series championships over 28 seasons with San Diego, San Francisco and Texas. He led the Giants to three titles from 2007 to 2019. ___ AP MLB:

ISTANBUL, Turkey (AP) — José Mourinho and Fenerbahce were left Wednesday with a difficult final test in their quest to return to the Champions League, which looks sure to be heading inside the Arctic Circle next month. Fenerbahce drew 0-0 at home against Benfica in the first leg of their qualifying playoff, despite the Portuguese team having a player sent off in the 71st minute. In the north of Norway, Bodo/Glimt's fairytale rise in European soccer continued with a 5-0 rout of Sturm Graz in their playoff first leg. Celtic failed to take home advantage in a 0-0 draw with Kairat Almaty, which hosts the return game four time zones from Scotland in Kazakhstan next Tuesday. Basel captain Xherdan Shaqiri scored early with a penalty but the Swiss champion was held 1-1 at home by Copenhagen. Seven playoffs will be decided with return games on Tuesday and Wednesday next week with the winners completing the 36-team Champions League lineup. The second-leg games include unheralded Pafos of Cyprus holding a 2-1 lead at home against Red Star Belgrade. Thursdays Keep up to date on sports with Mike McIntyre's weekly newsletter. The Champions League draw ceremony to find out each team's eight opponents in the single-standings league format will be made Aug. 28 in Monaco. Fenerbahce has not played for 17 years in the main Champions League, that Mourinho won twice: with Inter Milan in 2010 and Porto in 2004. Mourinho's team dominated the last 20 minutes of play in Istanbul after Benfica midfielder Florentino was sent off for being shown a second yellow card. A video review confirmed an offside call after Fenerbahce forward Youssef En-Nesyri thought he had scored in the 81st. ___ AP soccer:
