'My partner was escorted off Turkey flight - I never saw him again'
The partner of a "kind and caring" dad who was escorted off a flight to Turkey for being drunk has been left "traumatised" by his death. Ben Crook, 32, was reported missing after he jetted off to Antalya with his partner Jess Jenkins and their two children on September 23.
An inquest at Gwent Coroner's Court on Tuesday heard that Ben had been escorted off the plane by Turkish police upon landing. After consuming alcohol and cocaine, he exhibited erratic behaviour on the flight, shouting at an air steward and smashing both his and Ms Jenkins' mobiles.
Jess and her two youngest children spent days at police stations and searching the streets of Antalya to find him. However, heartbreaking news emerged that Ben had died after falling from a height, which led to him suffering a fractured skull and multiple other injuries.
Heartbroken Jess has described Ben's death as "traumatic" after she spent days searching for him, telling Wales Online: "I spent every day at police stations and walking around Antalya trying to find him.
"I am certain the police knew he was dead but didn't tell me. I didn't even know he had been taken to hospital, and still don't believe he had, as I haven't received a hospital bill and I still haven't been given any of his belongings.
"After being escorted off the flight he was taken into a room and I was told to go through customs, carry on to the hotel and they would sort his arrival there. I told the customs officers where we were staying.
"We arrived at 4am and by 7am I had called home to tell my family what had happened. By about 10am, when he hadn't arrived, I went looking for him.
"I went to police stations every single day. The first day they had told me he been taken to Seven Seas Hotel and said they would bring me to him. I had our two children with me at the time and one of their friends, so three kids in total.
"I went to this hotel and he was not there, he had never been taken there, but they continued giving me false hope he was alright. They knew he was dead by this point," she claimed. "He was found 40 minutes away from the hotel we were staying at and I do not believe it was an accident, he was petrified of dying.
"I can't describe the feeling of when I found out he had passed away without crying. He was such a loving, caring, and kind person who would do anything for me and the kids. I am traumatised and I don't think I will ever be able to go on holiday ever again.
"He was looking for me in his last moments. He sent messages to me and his dad from a Turkish man's phone, but we didn't see the messages until we had got home.
"Me and Ben had been together for nine years and he raised my other two children, Ella, who is 17 now, and Harley, who is 16, as his own, before we had our own.
"Ben was told by doctors he wouldn't be able to have kids but we conceived twice within the space of a year - our daughter Harper, is six years old now and our son Jax is five."
In Ben's memory, nine of his family and friends are walking from "Sneg to Snowdon", which is 150 miles in five days, in the hope of raising £5,000 for Ben and Jess's children. They have set up a GoFundMe to try and reach the goal.
On Monday, they walked from Senghenydd to Brecon, on Tuesday from Brecon to Rhayader, Wednesday from Rhayader to Machynlleth, Thursday from Machynlleth to Blaenau Ffestiniog and on the Friday they were due to reach the Snowdon Summit.

The tragic accident happened on Saturday morning, with a 36-year-old climber pronounced dead at the scene in Snowdonia and his body airlifted by a mountain rescue team A man tragically died after plummeting from a popular hiking route in Wales. The 36-year-old fell from the notorious Crib Goch in Eryri National Park (also known as Snowdonia National Park) on Saturday. Emergency services, including North Wales Police and the Llanberis Mountain Rescue Team, rushed to the scene following reports of a man falling from the ridge at 11.30am. However, although he was airlifted from the mountain the climber was sadly pronounced dead at the scene. Formal identification is yet to take place but police say the man's next of kin have been informed, reports Wales Online. Inspector Jamie Owens said: "My deepest condolences remain with the man's family at this incredibly difficult time. Our investigation into the circumstances of this tragic incident is ongoing. "We are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the fall to contact police via our website or by calling 101, quoting reference number 25000678802." This is not the first time someone has died while climbing in Eryri National Park this year. On February 22, civil engineer Maria Eftimova, 28, fell from the Tryfan north ridge - a popular but dangerous scrambling route. Bulgarian Maria - who had more than 10,000 followers on social media - was an experienced mountaineer and had not long completed an ice-climbing course in Norway. Her pal, Victoria Critchley, paid tribute to the social influencer who had been living in Manchester: "Maria was an ambitious, bright and cherished 28 year old, whose vibrant personality, energy and aura touched and uplifted all around her. "She had a passion for engineering, having studied Civil Engineering at the University of Salford and a love for extreme sports. Her biggest passion being Snowboarding, which she was super excited for and looking forward to doing again on her upcoming trip to Austria. "She had an insatiable thirst for life and exploring our world's beauty. Tragically, she was taken from her family far, far, far too soon!" Less than a week before Maria's death, which in June was ruled as accidental, another climber lost their life in the park. Dr Charlotte Crook, in her 30s, died while climbing Glyder Fach, located in the same region, on February 16. She and her colleague, Adam Weatherhogg, were walking in Snowdonia when she slipped and fell 30ft from a grassy ledge. Despite having a broken wrist, he tried in vain to save Charlotte for more than an hour. Senior coroner John Gittins praised his "amazing efforts" as he attempted chest compressions on his friend. Charlotte's parents said the hills and mountains were their only child's "happy place". The coroner reached a conclusion of accidental death that was a "conspiracy of all matters at that time, weather, route and loss of footing." In May 2024, the remains an experienced walker who went missing while trekking alone in Snowdonia were found 12 years on by a search and rescue team who were trying to locate a separate missing walker. Shayne Colaco disappeared in the summer of 2012 while walking alone in the Carneddau mountain range in Eryri.

Tracy Turner, 52, a long-serving operating theatre assistant at Cardiff's University Hospital of Wales, and her husband Stuart Compton, 46, were jailed recently for plotting to rape children as well as for hoarding sickening images of children being abused. They exchanged messages with one another about vile plans to bring a young girl to a shed where she would be raped before they "disposed" of her. During sentencing, Turner's barrister said she had worked for the NHS for 33 years "without blemish." Her colleagues were left reeling when her disgusting fantasies came to light and were unable to reconcile their memories about the "friendly, hardworking and knowledgeable" hospital worker with the monster who plotted unspeakably evil schemes. One recalled: "She was just normal. "She was not very educated and she was very, very loud and confident, but she was well-liked. She knew her job as a theatre assistant and would help others." Colleagues said they did notice a change in Turner about a year before the horrifying news came to light, WalesOnline reports. "She went from being on it, very efficient and good at training other people up, to the complete opposite. "She would disappear from the theatre for ages and then randomly reappear an hour later. She'd come back and say, 'I've been on the phone to Stuart, he's been driving me crazy.' She'd often use that as an excuse for disappearing, and not for the odd 10 minutes but for an hour or more." The court heard Turner had been taking cocaine every day after Compton introduced her to the Class A drug. She also became a heavy drinker. "Instead of her doing it, some of the newer members of staff ended up having to train recruits. They were doing the job better than she was. It was a massive change." One NHS source said a few of the operating theatre staff had been friends with Turner on social media and now look back at their online interactions with revulsion. "She would comment on pictures of their kids, nothing inappropriate, just as friends or family would," one said. "Of course now it makes their skin crawl." They were unsettled looking back on the Facebook comments and the fact she worked at the NHS while some paediatric surgery took place in main theatres. "It's terrifying to think she could have had access to these children when they were anaesthetised," said one. "Everything crosses your mind." Her duties included stocking and cleaning theatres as well as helping patients with positioning during operations. She had been considered to be highly competent throughout the majority of her career and had taken a course to become a band three senior theatre assistant. One former colleague said: "I was absolutely disgusted and shocked [to learn of her crimes]. She was friendly, hardworking and knowledgeable. I'd never expect this from her." Turner and Compton began discussing raping a girl in 2022. They plotted to take her to a nearby woodland and cemetery before raping her. Both admitted to finding pleasure from the sickening thought. Prosecutor Matthew Cobbe said: "They both recognised the brutality of the sexual acts that they discussed, they recognised that they would need to take steps to ensure [the child] could not cry out or scream as she was being abused." They also discussed abusing a boy and discussed Turner having intercourse with the boy. After police learned Compton adopted different identities to distribute indecent images on WhatsApp to paedophiles. Compton, of Daniel Street, Cathays, pleaded guilty to six counts of arranging a child sex offence, three of making indecent images, and three of distributing indecent images. Turner, of Ninian Road, Roath, pleaded guilty to six counts of arranging a child sex offence and two of making indecent images. Myrthyr Tydfil Crown Court also heard how both had been of previous good character. Compton was initially sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of seven years. Turner, who cried during the hearing, was initially sentenced to 12 years' imprisonment with an extended licence period of two years. Turner's sentence was later cut to 10 years in jail with two on extended licence, with Compton retaining a life sentence but with the tariff being increased to eight years and 11 months.

Fabian Bennett, 35, could be heard retching in the stairway to the cells Inner London Crown Court as he briefly excused himself from the dock on Monday morning, after being told he would avoid jail. He and his brother Dean Williams-Gillett, a 34-year-old convicted drug dealer, were found guilty of multiple assaults and criminal damage offences after savagely attacking a family and smashing their cars with a baseball bat in Southwark in June 2024. Williams-Gilllet drunkenly started a confrontation, then got Bennett involved by making false accusations against the victims. Both men had their sentences suspended after Judge Vanessa Baraitser considered the bursting prison population and an assessment by the Probation Service that found both defendants were unlikely to reoffend if they took up the opportunity to do self-help workshops. Both must pay compensation to their victims and attend rehabilitation days instead. During the trial, jurors heard Ben Ryan was taking his dad Andrew Ryan home in his green Hyundai, alongside his partner Destiny French, who was eight-months pregnant. When Ben parked outside and took his dad Andrew up the stairs to his flat, Williams-Gillett appeared drunk outside and took offence to Andrew shouting goodbye to his family from his balcony. Feeling threatened Ben, got back in his car, but Williams-Gillett reached through the window and took his car keys. When Destiny asked for the keys back, Williams-Gillett tried to punch her. By now Andrew, 50, had come back down the stairs and tried to pull Williams-Gillett away from Destiny, triggering a brutal assault. 'Your response to that was to launch a violent attack on him. To stab him repeatedly to his face, so hard the keys were bent out of shape from the impact,' said Judge Baraitser, reported MyLondon. Unable to start the car, Ben phoned his cousin Dean Maguire for help, while Williams-Gillett's brother Fabian Bennett also arrived carrying a metal baseball bat. Bennett immediately set to work on Andrew Ryan with the baseball bat, hitting his legs, ribs, and body. Williams-Gillett also joined in the beating, kicking Andrew and using the baseball bat. Bennett then turned to Destiny, grabbed her by the throat, and bent her backwards over a fence while goading her partner Ben Ryan 'using her as bait'. When Dean arrived in his Citroen, Ben and Destiny got in the car while Williams-Gillett used the bat to smash the windows, including where a child was sitting. Dean was punched in the face, but Ben managed to drive everyone away leaving his Hyundai behind. When he came back to get the car, the doors had been broken and Destiny's purse containing £350 in cash and her Monzo card was stolen. After a trial, Bennett was convicted of two ABH offences in relation to Destiny and Andrew, while Williams-Gillett was convicted of ABH, assault by beating, two counts of criminal damage, and theft, in relation to Andrew, the damaged cars, and the stolen purse. 'This assault was clearly persistent, repeatedly stabbing his face and returning with your brother to hit him with a baseball bat,' said the judge. 'This was a nasty attack by both you and your brother against a man of some age with some disabilities, with a car key and baseball bat near his son and and grandson. There's no explanation for this other than your wholly misguided belief they were responsible for an earlier incident.' Williams-Gillett was jailed for three years at Woolwich Crown Court in 2013 over drug dealing offences, and also has previous for batteries, a public order offence, and an assault on an emergency worker. Bennett had no relevant previous offending. Bennett has always argued he joined the ruckus under false pretences, after Williams-Gillett claimed he had been assaulted and his home attacked. Williams-Gillett was sentenced to 18 months suspended for 20 months with 25 days rehabilitation activity requirement. He must also pay £1,700 in compensation. Bennett got 12 months suspended for 18 months with 25 days rehabilitation activity requirement. He must pay £500 compensation.
